"My name is Shiva Sookdaeo . I'm 10 years old and I live in Tunapuna. I started studying karate when I was four years old.
Karate is a Japanese word for "open hand". That means no weapons.
My outfit is called a "Gi", which is a traditional karate uniform. A "Kata" is a series of karate moves."

Karate is a form of unarmed combat
This art form is more than 5000years old.
Unarmed pesants and priests developed this art form to defend themselves from bandits and warriors.
It developed in the islands of Okinawa in the early 1600 after a decree was passed by the government which outlawed the carring of arms by the lower class.

Karate practice includes deep breathing, blocking, chopping blows, and kicking.
Karate involves the use of your hands, elbows ,knees and feet.
A well directed blow can be fatal. Experts of karate believe that the bare hand is the most potent weapon. Experts are capable of splitting bricks and blocks if wood with a bare hand.

a white belt is a beginner and he may wear a green belt after facing one opponent, a purple after 2, brown after five, and a black belt is the highest... signifies a master of the art.

"I like to go to class, because I'm always learning new things. When we spar, we put pads on so we don't hurt each other.
We're not learning to attack, we're learning to defend. Karate isn't about fighting. It's about concentrating.
Learning to respect others is a big thing in karate.
We treat our classmates, our teachers with respect. And we treat others the way we would like to be treated."
"I just started learning the bow. And it's the next step in me achieving my black belt."
My instructor is called "Sensi" which means "teacher". He is Cuffie Hicks and i attend a school of Karate.
"Karate takes a lot of practice because-- you have to practice, so you can learn."

Winning isn't the best thing. If you lose, you still won. They got the medal, but you won in your heart." "As long as you do your best, you're a winner."
