Past Feud, New Troubles - Clean Version

Shock Skellington sat in her office, reviewing the blueprints for Halloween that year. Being the Pumpkin Queen, she was entrusted with the care of the entire holiday. At times that job got quite out of hand and she needed a break, but she was handling it quite well (despite the fact that she was nearly seven months pregnant). Having ruled for over a year by now, she had managed to gain control of the whole deal rather quickly. She loved her job greatly, the challenge of it. Even still, nothing compared to returning home each night to her husband Ira and daughter Alisa. Now she was expecting another addition to her family, and then they would be complete.
She looked up from her work, glancing at the walls of the office. When her adopted father Jack had been King, he had owned this little room. It had been covered in pictures of his life, from childhood to the present years. And that was exactly the way Shock was designing it. She didn't have as many as he had up yet, but she was still quite proud of it nevertheless. There were some up from the days she and her two brothers had shared with the former town villain before they'd been taken in by Jack and his wife Sally. Others of Alisa, and plenty of her wedding with Ira. She planned to add to her collection as she got older--some of this child, her grandchildren, things that were important to her. The furniture she also loved; antique desk, standing lamp, leather swivel chair. In the corner of the room sat a small wicker basket, in which lay Jack's ghost-dog, Zero. Nearly as old as his master, the creature preffered to sleep in the office. He occasionally ventured outside, but prefered mainly to sleep. She bent down to scratch his ear, but he just rolled over and went back to sleep. She chuckled as she opened the office door, heading outside. Out here people were milling about constantly, doing this and that in preparation of the holiday. Carving jack-o-lanterns, creating potions, coming up with new and better ways to scare the humans. She smiled happily as she watched it all. This was what she lived for, knowing that all of this was because of her. Pumpkin Queen of Halloween, high ruler of all. She loved her job, and she knew that she was good at it.
"Shock," someone called to her. "Shock, did you take a look at those plans?" She turned to see the mayor standing behind her, the obese little man looking up at her.
"Yes, I did," she replied. "It looks good, except I think you need to get more bats in before the big night. Mortals hate them, as you know. Other then that, they looked great."
"Wonderful then. I'll make some copies for tommorrow, so we can get started on them. It's getting late now though, it's quarter to 5 now. Midas well shut down for the day."
A nod. "Yeah, we've made good progress. Besides, people are starting to leave now."
"I'll close down here, let you get on to your family. It must be physically exhausting working all day like this when you're expecting."
"Well, it's quite tiresome. Thank-you, I appreciate your help..."
"Not at all. Have a nice evening, Shock."
She nodded. "You too, Mr. Mayor. See you tommorrow.

Ira was waiting for her when she got home, sitting at the kitchen table in front of their supper with Alisa. "Hey there," he grinned. "Got your favourite made, Rat Stew."
"Oh, thank-you darling. How wonderful." She took a seat, letting out a long sigh as she did so. "Wow, I'm beat. A long nap would be nice after supper."
"Yes, I think you should do that. Me and Alisa don't mind cleaning up, do we dear?"
"Nope," she said happily. "Mommy, me and Daddy had a lot of fun today."
"You did? What kind of games did you play?"
"All kinds of them! We went to the park and had a picnic and everything!"
"Oh, that's great." A faint smile. "Sorry I haven't been playing with you as much lately, dear, but mommy just doesn't have the strength to."
"Alisa knows," the girl replied simply. "Daddy says it's 'cause you're gonna have a baby."
Shock looked up at her husband. "Yes, he's quite smart, isn't he?"
"Yeah, he's the smartest."
"Well, I don't know about that..." he said humbly.
Shock just chuckled as she took another spoonful of stew. "Aren't you the modest one."
"Of course."
"Yeah, right. If there's anyone who isn't shy, then it's you."
He looked at her sadly. "What is this, beat on Ira day?"
"If you want it to be, then yeah." She paused, her face lighting up suddenly. "Ira, give me your hand!" He did so, allowing her to place it on his stomache. "Feel that?" she whispered.
He was silent for a second, until he flet a slight little kick. "Yes, I do! Wow, it's our baby! In there, in your stomache! I think he's stopped now..."
She released his hand, frowning playfully. "Who said anything about it being a he?"
A shrug. "I dunno. Sounds better then 'it'."
Shock laughed as she finished off her stew. "I see your point." She wiped her mouth in her napkin, rising. "Thank-you, darling, for that wonderful meal. I wish I could be more of a help around here, but..."
"Listen, don't apologize," he said as he stood up as well. "I don't want to hear you saying it. You're pregnant and tired, it's not your fault."
"I know, but I don't like having you cook all the time, it's not fair."
"Course it is, I like it." He embraced her. "Look, go and sleep. Don't worry about anything."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, positive."
A smile. "Thank-you. Could you help me out to the living room, please?"
"Not a problem." He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, leading her out to the sofa and laying her down carefully. Kneeling now at her side her kissed her swollen stomache, taking her hand into his own. He said nothing for a minute, just stared at her belly. Then he glanced back up at her face, smiling. "Can you believe it?" he said. "Our baby is in there, growing inside of you. Our own little part of us, a symbol of what we share. A bit of you, a bit of me."
"I can, believe me," she said. "I'm the one carrying it around, aren't I? 24 hour-a-day luggage. But still, the fact that I'm going to have your child astounds me."
"I'm so glad I made you my wife, Shock. Together forever..."
"And I wouldn't have it any other way," she said as he kissed her forehead. "Never."
"Nor would I, my queen. Sleep well."

Shock didn't wake until 11:00 that evening. Surprised that she had slept that long she rose from the couch, stretching. She should be in her bed if she was going to go to sleep. Wearily she made her way up the stairs, stopping first in Alisa's room. The four-year-old was sleeping peacefully in her bed, clutching the little vampire doll she kept close to her every night. The proud mother grinned, kissing her baby girl softly upon the cheek before heading on to her own bedroom.
Here she found that her husband was already in bed. He lay looking at the ceiling, arms underneath his head. He blinked when he saw her coming in, smiling softly.
"Oh hey there," he said. "You're awake."
"Yeah, but going back to sleep very soon." She pulled her pajamas from the closet, laying them momentarily on a chair. Trying to reach the zipper in the back of her dress she found it impossible, and asked her husband to do it for her.
"Sure," he said as he sat up. "Come over so I can reach you." She did so, allowing hi to do as she had asked. "Better?"
"Thank-you," she replied as she stood up. "It keeps getting harder and harder to reach that zipper." She pulled the dress off over her head, replacing it with the black robe. "There, all done." She was about to hop in bed beside him when he jumped up. "Wait, don't go to sleep yet."
She was confused. "Why not?"
He placed his strong hands on her shoulder, standing back so he could see her. "I just want to look at you and our baby for a minute," he said. "I haven't seen you two all day." He placed his hands now on her stomache, marvelling at it. "Wow, I still can't believe it, Shock. Our child is in there! Growing! And within two months, we'll have our baby!" A smile. "Oh, I love you. I hope that this child proves it to you. I would never allow any woman to carry my kid around for nine months in their stomache, unless I truly loved them. And you're the only one I could ever want to start a family with."
She touched his face gently. "I couldn't ever want a better father for my children. You're a great dad, you know. Alisa loves you to pieces. Her real father, now there was an asshole for you. But you...you're the daddy she's always wanted."
"Think so?"
"I know so." So gave him a little hug. "Now let's go to sleep. It's been a big day."
"Of course, my dear." a kiss. "Sleep tight." They each hopped into bed, turning out the light. It was silent for a second. "Hey Shock?" he asked finally.
"Yes dear."
"We ought to do something together over the weekend. You and me, I mean. It's been a long time since we just spent a nice evening together, you're always so busy..."
"Well, Ira, you know I'm quite busy being the queen and all, the fact that we haven't had a minute together isn't my fault."
"I know, but it seems the only chance we ever get to be together is at bedtime. I miss having someone to talk to. Just one evening, please, I'm begging you. I'm going insane without you."
She sighed. "Ira, you don't have to get on with that. Tommorrow is Friday, we can go out to dinner or something."
"Then talk a walk through the graveyard. A nice romantic evening."
"Sounds wonderful." She kissed him. "I won't forget, I promise you. We'll get a sitter over for Alisa, say for around 7."
"Oh, wonderful. I've been wanting to get back some time with you for ages now."
"And you'll get it, I promise you. Now good-night. We'll talk in the morning."
"Right. Sleep tight my darling."
"You too, dear. Love you."

Shock rose early that day, heading off to Town Hall. She found that the mayor had already opened the building by the time she got there, ready to get to work.
"My, you're early," she said when she saw him inside. "Any reason?"
"Oh, your father had asked a favor of me," he replied. "He's updating his will apparantly. Needed the proper documents."
She sighed. "He's so sure he's going to die. But I think otherwise; he's in wonderful condition, even if he does need a cane. I can't see what could go wrong."
"Well, midas well be safe," he replied. "I'm not exactly your average spring chicken either, I'm only around 150 years younger then him. But I've got my will all ready to go. Never know what might happen."
"I know. I just think he's being foolish worrying so much."
"Probably so. But no matter about that now; people are arriving for work." She turned, to see a crowd of vampires walking in.
"Ah, yes. Well sir, I'll speak to you later."
"Yes, your majesty. I'll go get the plans." He hurried off, and she turned back to the door just as her two youngest siblings were walking in; Barrel and Kyrene. She waved, heading over to them.
"Hey, how's it going?" she asked.
"Pretty good," Kyrene smiled. "How about you and your little passenger?"
A laugh. "Wonderful, thanks." Barrel said nothing, just stared off in to space. "Little bro? Something wrong?"
He shook himself back into reality, forcing his usual ear-to-ear grin. "Course not." He lowered his tone, growing serious. "We didn't get a chance to speak at all yesterday."
"Yeah, I was quite busy."
"I needed to talk to you..."
She could sense the urgency in his voice. "Right, we won't put it off a moment longer then..."
"Hey Shock!" came another voice. Lock came in, along with his wife Elizabeth. She pushed a small carriage, in which was their four month old daughter Laurella. He gave her a smile, giving her a bear hug. Though he was the younger sibling, his size contrasted greatly to hers. "How's my big sister?"
"Great, Lock," she said as she gazed back at Barrel. "Listen guys, I'll be right back, kay? Sorry, I won't be long."
Lock appeared confused for a moment, then shrugged. "Sure, we'll be here talking."
She gave him a quick peck on the cheek. "Thanks. C'mon Barrel, my office." He followed her into the little room, closing the door shut behind him. She offered him a chair beside her against a wall, which he accepted. Sitting together now he sighed, resting his elbows on his knees and cradling his head in his hands.
"Oh Shock, where do I begin?" he sobbed. "It's been so confusing, and I've been so afraid of what to say..."
She laid a hand on his knee. "Calm down, I'm here now. Say whatever you need to."
"Promise me that you'll try to understand."
"I will. Please tell me."
He sat up straight, staring at the ceiling. Then he chuckled. "Never saw it coming, I didn't. Didn't know who I could come to at first, who would understand me. But then I thought about you, my sister. The Queen. If anyone'll understand, it's you. You've done marvellous things for others in their times of dispair; Jack, Lock, Sally, Ira....now perhaps you can help me." He paused for a moment. "Well, let's get this over with. You know I've been having crappy girl problems all my life, right?"
"Yes," she told him.
"Well...oh, this is hard...."
"Don't worry, just say it. Get it out."
He took a deep breath. "Right. Get it it out. Say it, get it done. Alright, I'm ready. Shock, I'm gay."
A shrug. "So?"
"Is that all? So? You're not embarrased that you're brother prefers men over women? Your brother, the so called Prince of Halloween Town?"
She laughed. "Of course not! I really don't see the difference. Knowing this now, I don't see any diffrence in you. Except explanations. Such as why I haven't seen you with any chicks lately."
"Yeah, I know. Gave up on them I guess. I've really been battling this for a long time...I just didn't want to admit to myself that I didn't really like girls as much."
"Is it working out better this way?"
"Oh yeah. I've been seeing this one guy, Julius Thornton, for around 6 months now."
"That long? And I never figured it out? What a tricky little devil you are!"
"Yeah, we kept hidden well."
She nodded, a smile still upon her face. "You always were good at covering your tracks. I want to meet this guy, I really do. Bring him here later today, we can all talk."
"And break it to everyone else," he said sadly.
She patted his knee. "Now, don't be gloomy. Look at it this way; we can gossip about guys together. Think about it. 'Wow, he's a cute one, eh Barrel?' 'Yeah, I'd like a piece of him...'."
He laughed, delighted that she had taken it so well. "Oh, I love you! But I don't think that Ira would like that last idea very much."
"What Ira doesn't know can't hurt him," she said teasingly. "It'll be fine, though. Now you bring this Julius guy of yours here later today, alright?"
"Of course."
She sat back in her chair. "But tell me, is he good-looking?"
"Very, yes. I personally find him extremely attractive."
"Did you ask him or did he ask you?"
"Well, I met him at this bar. We started talking, and became friends. Then we started talking about his being gay, and he really opened me up. Made me realize to just be who I was."
She nodded. "Oh, I have to meet him. Get him up, have him here by lunchtime, we can go out and eat. Got it?"
"Right." They stood up and embraced. "Thank-you, Shock. I don't know where I'd be without you."
"No prob, little bro." She opened the door and they headed out, arm-in-arm. They stopped briefly in front of the stage and she took his hands, giving him a quick kiss. "Don't forget what I told you, right?"
"I won't."
"And don't let it get you down. This is who you are, and we will love you no less. I respect you for it."
"Really?"
"Yes. No go home, talk to him. It's important to see how he feels about this."
"Right, of course. I'll go to his place right away. Once again, thanks." One last hug and he was off, hurrying out of Town Hall. She just sighed proudly as Lock came over.
"What was that all about?" he asked.
"What? Oh nothing," she said as she placed a hand on her stomache. Her infant inside was stirring slightly. "Feel it!" she told him. "He's squirming around in there!"
He placed his hand beside hers, his face lighting up. "Wow, he sure is! My little niece or nephew."
"I bet my child will love you," she said. "Almost as much as Alisa does I bet. Now, stop hanging around here and get to work. We've got a lot of things to do today."
"Yes, ma'am," he said with mock salute. "I'm on my way."
"Funny, Lock," she called as he marched away. She just chuckled to herself. Her siblings were nuts, all three of them.

Barrel knocked on the door of Julius's apartment, one hand in his hair as he waited impatiently. At last he heard the click of the lock, and the familiar face finally appeared.
"Oh, hey," he said sleepily. "Come in."
"Thanks. I spoke to my sister."
Julius yawned as he grabbed a shirt off one of the chairs. "Really? How did she react?"
"Wonderfully," he replied. "Took it very calmly. She didn't really care, said it didn't change a thing."
"And it shouldn't," came the answer. "You have the right to see whoever you want to, Barrel...male or female."
"I know that, and thankfully so does she." He watched as Julius pulled on the shirt, smiling. "I really don't care though even if she had objected. I don't give a damn. I'm not sure though how Lock will react. Sally, Jack, and Kyrene I'm not worried about...but with him, you can never tell."
"Listen, don't freak out over this. Even if Lock isn't cool with it, then who cares? Barrel, I've dealt with issues like this before, men trying to break it to their families that they're not straight. I did it myself at one point. My folks went balistic at first, but they eventually accepted me for who I was. With Lock, you've just gotta get him to see the real you. I think I know him pretty good."
"Indeed," he said as he scratched his goatee. "I don't know though, midas well not worry over it. What happens, happens. Right?"
"Exactly." Another yawn. "Christ, I'm tired. Why'd ya wake me so early?"
"Cause we're going out to lunch with my sister. She's dying to meet you."
A laugh. "The queen wants to meet me? Damn, I'm gonna have to shower and everything."
"That'd be a first," chuckled Barrel. "You go do that, I'll fix ya some food. Probably not very good food, but you'd better not complain."
Julius headed towards the bathroom. "We'll see about that." He disapeered, and a few minutes later the sound of the shower could be heard. Barrel sighed as he stood up, heading into the kitchen and rummaging around. So he had finally admitted it to himself; he was gay. And now Shock knew; that made it all the more realistic. In some ways he still couldn't believe it himself, but he knew it was what he wanted. He wasn't simply in this to be 'different' or anything. Hell no. This was simply the person he was happier as. Now maybe he and Julius could have a normal relationship (if that's what you called it). Before they had been forced to conceal the fact that they were going out. Now they would let the world know the truth about Barrel Skellington, whether they liked it or not.
He pulled some rat legs from the freezer, settling on this as he fished around for a frying pan. Having found one he placed it upon the stove, placing the frozen food inside and turning on the heat. In the bathroom, Julius could be heard singing a merry tune. Barrel just chuckled, proceeding to burn up a piece of toast.
A moment later the door opened and out stepped Julius, a towel wrapped around his waist. He smiled, heading over to the kitchen table.
"Something smells good out here," he said. "Is it ready yet?"
"All done," came the answer as a plate was laid before him. "Voila!"
He sat down, admiring the food. "Mmm, I'm famished." He picked up the fork, taking a mouthful.
"Delicious." No response; Barrel was staring off at the wall. "Yo, over here," he waved.
"What? Oh, sorry..."
"Whatcha thinking about?"
"Take a good guess."
An understanding nod. "I see. Listen, don't worry. Your family will react fine. Don't put yourself through that misery, it's not gonna do a thing for ya. I know that before you tell your family the news, you feel awfully nervous, doubting yourself and the path you've chosen. Is that how you're feeling?"
"Exactly."
"Well, you've gotta chill. Be cool about it."
"I know, but what will they say? I don't want to loose their respect or anything like that, make them believe that I'm any less of a person..."
"Even if they do think that though, I won't! I know the real you; you've just gotta show that man to them as well."
A nod. "Right. I mean, why should it matter whether I prefer guys or girls?"
"Exactly!" A smile. "I've gotta get you to meet some of my other friends now that we won't be so restricted in our activities. Guys like us. You can talk to them, see that you're not alone...cause you're not, you know."
"Right, I've got you." He smiled. "You know, I've got a lot to be grateful to you for. You helped me see the true me underneath, helped me to become that person. Thanks."
"No problem. That's what I'm here for. You know, it's hard for people like us. Normal folks just don't understand how two guys can fall in love. But it's not so much about whether you're male or female; it's about how you relate to each other, how you feel about the other person. And that's why I like you so much. You're such an individual, so perfectly unique. I can talk so easily with you, tell you things I've told none of my other boyfriends. Do you understand any of this?"
He nodded. "Perfectly, and I agree totally. Love is a big issue--some of us just can't help falling for a member of the same sex."
"It's not so wrong though," Julius said. "Actually, it's kind of fun."
He laughed. "Yeah, now I actually don't mind saying things like 'ooo, what a hottie'."
A scowl. "But you won't, not as long as you've got me."
"Careful with me, I'm a tricky one. I don't want to have to get in a fight with you though, you'll cream me. It won't be restricted simply to words, I'll tell you that."
"I'll go easy on ya," he grinned. "Well, I'd better go dress I suppose. I'm not doing any good sitting here in my towel. What do you think I should wear?"
"I like that black pants and shirt combination you wore last week. Shock'll be impressed by that."
"Help me do something with my hair. You know I can't do crap with it."
"It's called 'gel'."
"It's called 'incompetant'."
Laughter. "Of course. Alright, I'll do something with it. But go change first; I don't think I'm ready to see you naked yet."
"Really? Whoa, we'll have to work on that. Alright then, I'll call you in a sec." He stood up, vanishing to his bedroom. Barrel just chuckled. This was the life he wanted, just like this. Him and Julius, together. Perhaps they'd get an apartment together or something, anything could happen. But first things first--right now they had to deal with his family.

Barrel showed up at lunchtime as promised, accompanied by a very good-looking man. Tall and pale-skinned with dark hair; handsome green eyes that looked as if they were peering into your very soul. She smiled at her brother upon seeing him. "You caught a fine one there," she whispered to him. He gave her a knowing smile, proceeding to introduce his companion.
"Shock, this is Julius, whom I've told you about. Julius, my sister the Queen."
They shook hands, and she found herself impressed by his strong grip. He nodded politely, the corners of his mouths curled up slightly.
"I've been told many great things about you, your brother has nothing but praise for you. It's an honour to be here."
"It's all mine," she said. "Come, let's go out for lunch, shall we? There's much to be discussed."

They sat a while later in a chinese restauraunt, dinning on rice and vegetable dishes. Shock dabbed at her mouth with a napkin, looking at Julius.
"So, you're the man my brother told me about," she said. "First of all, I'm going to admit that I wasn't surprised by Barrel's confession..."
"Hey!" he cried. "Is that meant as an insult?"
"No, it's simply the truth. I hadn't realized it before, but I understand now that it was quite plain to see. Secondly, I want you both to know that this changes nothing. Barrel, you will still remain the prince and all. For no absurd reason would I have you exiled from the Skellington family; how foolish."
"Good," cut in Julius. "I was quite concerned that you might do something horrible. I don't want that happening to him."
She smiled. "It's wonderful knowing that you care about my darling bro. No woman ever cared enough about him to worry about him, I'll give you that."
"Well, I do. Very much so, actually."
"You'd be surprised, sister," Barrel told her.
She nodded, fully aware that they were holding hands beneath the table. She didn't let on that she knew this though. "Also, I want to make a time to deliver this news to the rest of the family. Jack and Sally, Barrel and Lock...you know. The sooner, the better. Tommorrow night maybe. Give you two a chance to talk about the situation, and also give me time to plan something that you can make the announcement at."
"Good idea," Barrel complimented her. "Brilliant, as always."
"You know it," she said. "But really, I think that this is quite wonderful for the both of you. Barrel, I can tell you're much happier like this."
"I am. I really want to tell Jack and Sally about this though, as well as Lock and Kyrene. I need for them to know about it."
"Yes, tommorrow. You and Julius both show up to my place for around 7:30. I'll already have everyone else over by then, for a nice little get-together. Until then, don't worry about it. Go home, take it easy. This will all blow over easily."
"Are you sure?" he asked with concern.
"Absolutely," she re-assured him. "And if they don't want to take it nicely, then I'll have to take this into my own hands."
He grew concerned at that. "Listen now..."
She burst into laughs. "Oh, I wouldn't. I'll just have a nice talk with them is all. Don't worry, it'll all be fine."
"I pray that it will," he said as he clutched Julius' hand a little tighter. "I pray to God that it will."

Shock went back to work after that, punching in another 4 or 5 hours. She didn't get home until 6:00 that night, to find Ira and Alisa playing in the living room. "Oh, hey there," her husband said. "How was your day?"
"Unbelievebale," she managed to breath. "Exhausting. Have you forgotten our date tonight?"
"Nope. I've arranged for the sitter to be here by 7, as planned."
"Great." She kissed him, and he touched her belly gently. "And how's our little guy today?"
"Doing quite well, dad," she replied. "But oh, have I got news for you. You're not gonna believe it. I'm trusting you to keep this information to yourself though."
"Yes, of course my darling. What is it?"
"Not now, wait till supper. We'll go to that gourmet place downtown, your favourite."
"Wonderful," he declared. "I've already got my outfit picked out and everything, all I gotta do is pull it on."
"I'll go find something for myself then." She pulled him close to her, giving him a pleasantly satisfying kiss. He was caught by surprise, but immediately relaxed as he accepted the gift.
"I love you too," he grinned.
"Glad to hear it. I'll see you in a minute, I'm gonna get all set to go so that I'll be ready when the sitter comes."
"Right." He released her and she headed up the stairs, but not before blowing him a kiss. He smiled, sitting besides his step-daughter and the floor and sighing with pleasure.
"Daddy, play with me," she demanded.
"What? Oh, sorry dear. Where were we?"
"You were de prince, coming to rescue me."
"Of course. Hold on fair maiden, I'm coming...!"

By the time the sitter showed up, both Ira and Shock were ready to go. The queen had chosen a loose-fitting black t-shirt and matching jeans. Her king was in black pants and a classy grey and blue sweater. He opened the door to Jennifer, the girl they trusted most often with Alisa. She was the only person beside Shock's immediate family that they trusted with their most prized possesion.
"Hello there," he said with a smile. "Come right on in."
"Thanks, Mr. Skellington."
"You pretty much know the routine; bed at 9, two stories, glass of water...nothing new."
"Right."
Shock appeared at the bottom of the stairs, smiling at the girl. "Ah, you've arrived. How lovely."
"You're looking fine, Mrs. Skellington. I see you and the baby are doing well."
"Oh, yes, thank-you. Anyways, we'll leave you to it now. So long Alisa!"
"Buh-bye mummy!"
"See you in the morning, Ally," Ira waved.
"Night-night, daddy."
"Come on pet," his wife urged. "So long, you two." With that they left, heading into the evening air and hopping into their car. Ira hopped into the drivers seat after assisting her wife into the passenger's side. Poking the keys into the ignition he waved one last time, before finally starting up the engine and driving off.

20 minutes later they sat in Le Halloween, a popular restauraunt. Shock smiled at her husband, taking a sip of her water.
"Now," she said, "I can tell you all about what happened today. I must have your word though that you will talk about this to no-one. Especially not my relatives!"
He nodded, his face serious. "You have my word, dear."
She took a sip of her tea. "Well, you're not gonna believe this, but Barrel's gay."
He nearly choked on his steak. "Really? Geez, never saw that coming, not after all the chicks he's been with."
"But still, it explains why he could never settle down. He's simply not a ladies man."
A nod. "Yes, I understand now. It's all so clear, we were so stupid! How long has this been going on?"
"Nearly six months."
Another shock to him. "Who's the guy?"
"Some fellow by the name of Julius Thornton. Actually quite good-looking."
"Hey!"
She smiled, patting his arm sympathetically. "And so are you, pet."
"Thanks," he smiled proudly. "So do Jack and them know yet?"
"No idea. Tommorrow night I'm going to have a little get together for everyone, a simple family bonding night. That's when he's gonna spill the beans."
"And it's a big pot as well. I'd say they'll accept it pretty well though, at least I hope."
"Yes, so do I," she said softly, picking up her fork. "So do I."

Afterwards they went for their walk through the graveyard as planned. Ira held on to Shock's hand, allowing her to lay her head on his shoulder. The moon gazed upon them as they climbed the spiral hill, stopping at the top. He gave the top of her head a gentle kiss, laying a hand upon her stomache.
"I love you," he said quietly.
"Love you too, Ira."
He smiled at her, staring into her eyes. "You're a beautiful woman, you know. Our baby will be gorgeous."
Her face grew red. "You do that just to see me blush, I know it."
"No, I don't. I'm telling you the truth." Another kiss. "Oh, it's been so long since we've been able to simply talk. Here, sit down beside me." He helped her lower herself, placing himself beside her.
"So how long do we have until our child is born?"
"Around 2 months," she replied. "It's amazing, really. I mean, everything. The fact that I'm actually carrying your child. You, my husband, my one true love. Christ, I still can't believe that we're actually married. It seems like just yesterday you came back to me."
"I'm glad I'm here," he said as he entertwined his fingers with hers. "You don't know how much I love you, Shock. The limits of my affection for you are too far to reach. All those years being apart from you was just bloody hell. I never want to go through that again. If I ever lost you...."
"I know," she said as she embraced him. "Oh, do I ever. I don't ever want to be without you, Ira. I want to spend our lives together."
"For better or worse, richer or poorer. No matter what, I won't let what we share go to waste."
"I know you won't," she said as she gave him another gentle kiss. "And nor will I."

They returned home late that evening, and paid Jennifer immediately. After kissing the sleeping Alisa they headed off to sleep themselves, satisfied after such a wonderful evening together. Shock rose early the next morning, before either her husband or daughter were awake. Heading downstairs she began making arrangements for her get-together that evening; fresh wine, flowers, a cleaner. She wanted the place to be absolutely perfect.
Ira joined her a half hour after she rose, surprising her by kissing her neck tenderly. She shivered at his touch, giggling softly. "Good-morning, darling," she said.
"Why up so early?" he asked as he rested his head on her shoulder.
"Making plans for tonight," she said. "A cleaning crew will be coming by at around lunchtime. As well I'm going to prepare a dish of snacks and stuff. This has to go perfectly, Barrel's counting on me."
"What a wonderful sibling," he said as he sat opposite of her. "He's a lucky guy."
"Not as lucky as you though," she grinned. "He doesn't get to make love with me."
"At least I hope not," he grimmaced.
A laugh. "Really though, this has to go according to plan. I'll call my relatives later; they'll come, of course."
"Will this Julius guy be coming as well?"
"I believe so, yeah. I invited him to, I believe. I'll give little bro a ring later just to make sure."
"Right."
Alisa came down the stairs at that point, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "Mommy? Daddy? Are you home yet?"
"We certainly are, dear," Shock smiled. "Did you have fun last night?"
She nodded as Ira took her up onto his knee. He just chuckled.
"She's a bit groggy yet. She'll warm up soon."
"Little sweetheart. Did you want something to eat?"
"Cereal would be nice," said her husband with a grin.
"Not you, you big ape. Princess?" The child nodded. "What will it be then? Toast? Fried rat?"
"Toast," she whispered sleepily.
"Let dad get it," Ira said as he stood up, setting the girl on the chair. He paused for a second, giving the child a kiss. He then resumed to get the toast, humming merrily. Alisa just yawned heavily.
"Me wants bat jam on it," she told him.
"Bat jam? Of course." He pulled it from the cupboard, poking the bread in the toaster. Shock let out a sigh from her papers. "What's up, my sweet?"
"Oh, nothing. Can't get the cleaners in when I want them, they can only come in early. Ah well, they can work around us." A pause as she bit her pen. "I must get this just right though," she murmered. "For Barrel's sake."
"Don't worry," he said as he grabbed a knife. "Everything'll be fine, just you watch."
She bit her lip. "I don't know. All I can do is hope."

Barrel sat in his apartment, looking out the window at the cars passing by. Today was the day when he'd tell everyone. How would they react? Angry? Surprised? Confused? Or perhaps they wouldn't say anything, who knew? A sigh as he sat down his glass of wine, stroking his goatee. He must do what Julius had advised of him; keep it cool. But how? This was an incredibly important day in his life! How could he not be?
"Hey Barrel, couldn't ya sleep?" Julius emerged from the bedroom, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He wore a pair of grey track pants, nothing else.
"No, I've been awake all night. Just thinking I suppose. Don't worry about it."
"Too late for that." He took a chair opposite of him. "Look, cut it out with this depression crap, okay? I miss seeing that smile of yours. Loosen up a bit, alright? Just chill, it'll be fine."
"Sorry," he nodded. "I'm just kind of tense right now. Let's do something fun tommorrow evening, since we won't be forced to keep out of the spotlight anymore. How about the carnival? It's supposed to be in town."
"There's my Barrel! Always ready for a bit of fun."
A shrug. "I just think I've gotta get my mind off all this. Ya know, take a break."
"Exactly." It was at that instant that the phone rang. Barrel looked at it, surprised for a moment. He then lifted the reciever, mumbling a hello.
"Little bro? It's Shock."
He snapped into attention. "Oh, yeah. Hi."
"I was just making sure that Julius was coming tonight."
"Of course," he said, looking at the man opposite him. "I really need him to be."
"I think that they should get to meet him. I believe it's very important that they do."
"Yes, right."
She paused, reading his emotions. "Darling brother, please try to calm down. Take a deep breath or something; it'll all be fine, alright?"
"I can't help it...oh Shock, I'm so frightened!"
"Listen, don't worry about it, kay? It'll be fine. I'll see you at 7:30, alright?"
He glanced at the clock. 9:30 AM. "Right. I'll see ya then."
"Love ya."
"Bye."

The first to arrive were Lock and Kyrene, a bit late at 7:10. They smiled happily upon seeing their sister, embracing her warmly upon stepping inside.
"Thanks for the invitation," said the later. "A little family gathering? Sounds like fun!"
"Indeed," she said. "Come along, let's head to the living room then. Ira and Alisa should already be there muching on goodies." She had barely gotten out there when the bell rang yet again. "Ah, mother and father," she said. "Be right back." She left them to go get the door. Indeed it was Jack and Sally, standing arm in arm. Jack smiled at his daughter, beckoning her to give him a hug. She grinned happily, doing so. She then gave Sally one. "Oh, I'm so glad you could both make it," she said. "This is going to be a most eventful night."
"I'm glad so too," said the former King. "I was feeling somewhat under the whether earlier on, but I'm alright now."
"Ah, magnficent. Come, to the living room." She led them to where everyone else was seated. Lock had already dove into the whisky, while Ira sipped his champagne dignantly. Kyrene chose not to drink.
"Lock, be a dear and pour some of that up for your old man," said Jack.
"Certainly, geezer," he said jokingly. "Here ya go."
Sally frowned. "Not too much of that now, my dear. You know it's no good for you."
"Oh, piffle. I'll only have a couple of glasses."
"I'm sorry, I worry about you is all. You're not the young man you once were."
He patted her hand, giving her a little kiss. "No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you. This one will be my last."
Shock laughed as she took Ira's hand. "You two never cease to amaze me," she chuckled.
Kyrene just scratched her chin. "Say, where's Barrel? He's late."
"No, he's coming later on. Don't worry about it, it's all settled."
"A get-together simply isn't a get-together without Barrel."
"Aye, he certainly is the life of the party," Jack agreed.
A smile as Kyrene glanced down at Alisa, who was playing dolls. "So how's my darling niece?"
The little girl smiled. "Fine, Auntie Kyrene."
"Are you looking forward to having a new baby brother or sister?"
"Yep," she said happily. "Mummy says I can help look after him."
"Yeah? I bet you'll be a great big sister." The girl just smiled proudly.
Jack smiled at the girl. "What a doll. Shock, you've a got a wonderful daughter there. I know your next child will be the exact same way with two such wonderful parents."
"Father, you're just like Ira when it comes to the compliments."
"I only say what's true, my dear."
"Yeah, he says that as well." Laughter, followed by the ring of the doorbell. Shock froze, glancing at the clock upon the wall. 7:25. Early, but oh well. She rose gingerly. "Be right back," she said. She found Barrel and Julius out there, just finshing off a pep talk. Barrel smiled at his sister, allowing her to embrace him.
"Ah, my baby bro. I guess it's time, eh?"
"Yep, but I've got both you and Julius here to help me." He touched his boyfriend's arm softly. Shock nodded, accepting this casual gesture of affection.
"I guess we'd better do it then," she said. "Good luck."
"Thanks," he mouthed. Taking a deep breath he followed her into the living room. He took a seat on the loveseat, and Julius sat beside him.
"Ah, and who's your friend, son?" asked Jack. "I don't believe we've met."
"No, you haven't." he cleared his throat. "In fact, there's a lot you don't know."
They were confused by now. "What do you mean?" asked Lock.
"Well, I've got a secret to tell you. I've already told Shock about it, and it's time you knew. So I'm not gonna delay this a second longer. Everyone, I'm gay."
Shocked silence. "Well," said Sally silently. "I never saw that coming."
"Barrel, is it true?" asked Lock. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," he replied. "Positive."
"And Julius...is he your lover?"
He took the hand of the man beside him. "Yes," he said. "He is."
Jack was stunned. "Well, Barrel, I'm personally amazed. Amazed, but not upset. I'll adjust, I know. And I want you to know that I'm satsfied with however you decide to live you life. Right Sally?"
A smile. "Barrel, we love you no matter what. I fully support your decision."
Though she was quite startled, Kyrene nodded as well. "Me too. Nothing will change how much I love you."
"Oh thank God," he breathed. "I was so afraid, terrified that you'd kick me out of the family."
He then appeared concerned. "Lock--what are you thinking? Are you angry?"
He shook his head. "No, good heavens no. You're my brother. And this is the path you've chosen. I really have no problems with gays and lesbians, never have. I've had many friends who made the same choice as you. I guess what I'm saying is, I still care about ya, and I always will. It's kind of cool actually..."
A laugh. "Thanks, Lock. I never expected it to be taken like this...I have a feeling though that Halloween Town won't take it as well."
"Oh, they will," Shock said with a straight face. "I won't tolerate anyone giving you a rough time, and I think they know that."
Jack laughed from his place beside Sally. "Ah, my darling little queen. Taking charge. That's just what I like to see."
Barrel just shook his head. "I don't need anybody sticking up for me, you know. This is something I need to take care of on my own."
"Are you sure?" asked his big sister. "Because you know I can very easily tell them to lay off you."
"Positive," he told her. "Me and Julius will handle it together."
She had no choice but to step down. "Alright then," she replied. "But if you change your mind..."
"I know, but I don't think I will. Thanks."
"What I don't get though," said Ira as he scratched his chin, "is the way most people react when a family member tells them something like this. They think that there's no hope for them anymore, that they're some sort of freak. But really, it's just another way of life. Know what I mean?"
"Exactly," said Lock. "They think it's some sort of horrible disease or something. I personally don't see the difference; Barrel's still my brother, and I really don't care which sex he likes to date. It's his life, not mine."
"The world works in mysterious ways," said Sally as she shook her head. "This is just one of them."
They spent the entire evening talking away, until long past midnight when Jack and Sally declared that they'd be heading off for home.
"That's a wonderful idea," Barrel agreed. "I'll be off as well. Coming Julius?"
"Of course," he said as they all got up and headed for the porch. The six visitors all got on their shoes, thanking Shock and Ira for such a marvelous evening.
"No problem," the Queen replied. "Take care now, see you later. So long everyone!"
Everyone waved as they went their seperate ways; Jack and Sally took off in their little car, while Lock and Kyrene headed off in her vehicle to drop him off at his house. Meanwhile Barrel and Julius walked together down the street, their arms linked together. Ira just chuckled as he closed the door behind them. "Ah, my dearest," he said as he took her into his arms. "Your family never ceases to amaze me."

Barrel and Julius walked arm-in-arm, chatting quietly. "I'm still quite surprised at how well they took it," the prince was saying. "I thought for sure they'd banish me from the family."
"Well, you're always searching for the worst in things," his lover answered. "I told you it'd all go fine, didn't I? I mean, your family is generally very understanding, especially your parents."
"I know, but I was just concerned. I mean, their opinions are very important to me, I love them all very dearly."
"I think that you should learn how to loosen up. If there's one thing I'm going to teach you, then that's it.
A chuckle. "Thanks, Julius." He paused for a moment. "I just had a sudden brainstorm," he said. "I think we should move in together."
That idea delighted Julius. "Really? You sure?"
"Positive. Couldn't seem more right to me."
"Great then. How 'bout you move in with me?"
"Yeah, seeing as my place is a dump."
A strange look. "Why didn't you get a better place? I mean, you're the son of the former Pumpkin King. That guy is loaded, the richest person in Halloweentown! All your siblings have exotic mansions in the ritziest sections of Halloween Town. Yet you keep yourself limited to what you have; a small apartment overlooking town. Why's that?"
He shrugged. "I dunno. Never seemed to matter to me. I mean, it's all just a place to live in if you ask me. I mean, growing up in the Skellington mansion never seemed to influence me any. I just didn't care. Anyways, I just happen to like apartments. Easy to clean."
Julius laughed. "Indeed. How about we move you in tommorrow then? We could borrow a truck from a friend of mine to haul your stuff over in. I have a spare room, you can put your bed and stuff in there."
"Right. Now, what to do about my sofa and stuff...well, Jack has an enormous basement that he never uses, he's often offered to keep things safe down there. I'll call him in the morning regarding that. I haven't got much furniture and stuff though, we'll only need maybe one or two fellas to help us."
"Wonderful, I know just the guys to help us to." He laughed merrily. "Oh, this is great! Purely delightful!"
Barrel simply nodded as they walked along. "It is, isn't it Julius? It most certainly is..."

Jack lay in bed, waiting for Sally to join him. At last she appeared at the top of the stairs, already in her black flannel nightgown.
"What an evening," she breathed. "I never would have guessed it myself."
"Barrel's gay," Jack said quietly. "Wow, how strange. But I guess that's alright with me. It'll take some getting used to and all, but I don't feel the need to interfere with his private life."
"Exactly. If that who he wants to be, then that's it. We have no right to say he can't."
"Besides, Julius appears to be a nice young lad. He knows what he wants in life. I think that our son has made the best choice for himself, and I think that this will be good for him."
"Me too," she agreed. "He looks so happy now. Not at all bashful he and his friend weren't."
"Indeed not," he chuckled. "But so what? It's a sign of love, affection. I suppose there's nothing wrong with that."
She picked up a brush from on top of the dresser, pulling it through her long grey hair. Her aging husband smiled at her happily. "Ah, my darling Sally," he sighed. "Over all these years, you haven't lost your beauty. You deserve better then an old man like myself."
She frowned at him. "Oh, hush now. I would allow no such a thing to happen. You know that you're my only one, Jack. Always have been. I've loved no other man, not in all my days."
"True," he admitted. "Dr. Finklestein created you and then you fell for me. And I've always been grateful that you came into my life. I don't know how I'd have made it without you."
She climbed into bed beside him, turning out the light. She embraced him, sighing. "We were simply meant to be," she sighed peacefully. "Good-night, Jack."
A smile. "Good-night, Sally."

Shock and Ira sat on the love seat, relaxing in each other's arms. The queen let out a sigh of relief as her husband toyed with her hair. "I'm glad that's over with," she said. "They accepted it pretty well, don't you think?"
He nodded. "Exceptionally well. Barrel was nice and calm about it too, which made it all the better."
"Indeed. But who knows? Maybe this way Barrel will finally meat the one person he's been destined to spend life together." He kissed her forehead softly.
"Perhaps," she said quietly, placing a hand on her stomache. He smiled down at the baby growing inside of her, laying his fingers on hers.
"I love you," he told her. "I don't think you'll ever know how much I truly do. Just think about it Shock, we're finally married! We're going to have a child of our very own! I don't think that there's any more of a permanant symbol of the love two people share."
"I love you too, Ira," she said as she embraced him. "I always will."

Jack recieved a call early the next morning from his youngest son. He picked up the phone as he ate his breakfast, mumbling a hello.
"Dad?" came Barrel's voice. "I was wondering if I could get a favor out of you."
"It depends, my boy. What would it be?"
"I need to store some stuff in your basement. Would that be a problem?"
"Course not," he said. "Why?"
"Cause I'm moving in with Julius," he answered. "We've already begun moving my stuff over there, the two of us and a few of his friends. If we're lucky we'll be done by suppertime. Then we're gonna go have some fun around town."
Jack didn't have a problem with any of this. "Oh, go for it. Just bring it on up, we've lots of space for it."
"Thanks," he replied. A pause. "Dad, I really want to know though...what do you think of my choice? Are you disapointed with me?"
"Gracious, no!" he cried. "Barrel, if there's any one thing that me and Sally tried to teach you growing up, it's that we support you in everything that you do. and that means everything. We'll always love you. Besides, this doesn't change anything else about you--you're still the same Barrel. Just a bit different, a little bit improved. That's all."
"Thanks," came the reply from the other end of the line. "We'll be coming over later on, probably making our way up all throughout the day."
"Sure, that's great. See you later."

Barrel showed up at Jack's house at around 11:00, along with two other men. They were strong and burly-looking, and were carrying his son's chesterfield. He waved the three inside. "Basement's just down there," he said as he opened the proper door. Just find a place along the wall to drop it." They grunted a thank-you, heading on down.
"I've gotta tell you how much I appreciate this," Barrel told him. "It means a lot to both me and Julius."
"Not a problem," he smiled. "He's a nice man, that fella is. I have no problems with him."
"I'm glad," he replied. "I really do care about him."
Jack nodded, motioning towards the kitchen table. "Come, let's sit down," he said. "Tell me a bit more about the two of you." They did so.
"I don't really understand it all myself," Barrel admitted. "So many feelings at once, you know? But Julius truly is wonderful, I don't where I'd be without him. He's there for me when I need him to be, he's always ready with a comforting word. He's so great to me. And I know this might seem a bit odd, but I really love him. It sounds insane, but I couldn't imagine myself being with another woman ever again. They're a true wonder, of course, but nothing compares to this. Of course, being with a woman is another story altogether. To have her love and attention is all very wonderful. But for me, no girl can hold a match towards my feelings for Julius."
"Indeed, woman are a blessing," Jack replied. "To have a lady by your side is a feeling of true ecstacy, a marvel. The act of making love is something in itself is another case altogether, especially with your true love. Women seem to fit just right in your arms, and they're also quite visually appealing. But sometimes some people just can't get the love they want with a woman. They have difficulty with them. And, such as in your case, they just don't find them as attractive. But to me, that's perfectly fine. And I hope you know that as well. You're still my boy, and I would never let you think that I didn't love you over something as small as that."
A grin. "Thanks, old man," he said. "It probably freaks you out a bit, seeing your son holding hands with another guy."
He just shrugged. "Not really, no. I really don't think it's that wrong. It's perfectly alright with me. Just never forget that."
"I won't."
The two men came up from the basement. One of them wiped his forehead with a cloth, groaning. "That's one damn heavy couch," he said. "Um, is it okay if we had a drink?"
Jack smiled. "Go for it."
The other man, tall and dark-haired, sat next to Barrel at the table. "We haven't got too much to bring over here. We've already got most everything over to Julius' place by now. The bed and the clothes and all. We just have a few things to bring here."
"Ya know," cut in the other. "Armchair, table, a few other odds and ends. We'll be out of here by supper."
"Thanks for the help you two," said Barrel. "By the way, father, these two fellas are Ben Howl and Mark Shriekson."
The former king shook their hands. "Nice to meet you, boys."
"It's an honour, said Mark, the dark-haired one. "Barrel, we should go finish this."
A nod. "Go out to the truck; I'll be right there." They nodded, doing so. Jack just smiled.
"Are they...."
"An item? Yeah. Been seeing each other since last month sometime. Nice guys."
"That's great. I'll see you later on."
"Right. See ya."
"So long, son." He watched as Barrel headed out the door, hopping into the truck and driving away. This actually wasn't too bad. He could tell how happy the lad was like this, and that in turn made him happy as well. It was nice seeing Barrel so content in his life for once.

By 5:00 they were done. Julius thanked Ben and Mark as they left, insisting on paying them. They refused his cash though, zipping off before he could protest. He just chuckled as he closed the door behind them.
"Those guys," he laughed. He looked towards Barrel, who was silent. "So here we are," he said. "You and me, living together. Feel weird?"
"I don't know. It certainly feels a lot different. A lot more...realistic, I suppose."
"You'll adjust," came the reply. "Hey, what about that trip to the carnival, huh?"
"Ah yes, almost forgot. I'll get my jacket then and we can be off, how about that?"
A smile. "Sounds wonderful."

Ira, Shock, and Alisa spent a nice quiet evening at home. It was around 9:30 when they finally put the girl to bed, taking a break on the sofa. Shock smiled as she embraced her love.
"It's so nice and cozy here," she sighed. "I never want to get up."
"Let's not then," he said. "I'm all for staying right here." He touched her stomache. "How's our baby?"
"Very good. I'm so anxious, Ira..."
"We both are," he replied. "Oh God, this is amazing...I'm gonna be a father!" A kiss. "I promise you, I'll be a wonderful daddy to this child. I'll do what Mark was too afraid to do."
"I know you will," she said.
They were interupted by a knock at the door. A sigh as Ira stood up, annoyed. "Who could that be?" he muttered. He headed for the door, opening it up to find Barrel.
"Is Shock here?" he asked. "I wanted to see her." There was something odd the look in his eyes, but Ira wouldn't refuse.
"Yeah, just in the living room," he replied. Barrel nodded before stepping in, taking off his shoes and looking around for a moment, as if wondering where to go. Ira found this odd seeing as the Prince had been here a million times before, but meerly shrugged. Barrel then headed out to where his sister was sitting. A smile broke out across his face as Ira sat back down.
"Ah, Barrel," cried the Queen as she stood up. "What brings you here?"
He opened his arms to her, accepting a hug. "I won't be long," he said. "I needed to do something." He glanced down at her belly for a second, that same look in his eye. Ira meanwhile watched, scratching his chin. Something was not right here.
Barrel just smiled as he reached down to touch his sister's stomache. As Ira stared at his brother-in-laws eyes, it registered on him. "Shock, no!" he cried, as he rushed foreward and pushed the prince away.
Shock just stared at him. "Ira have you gone absolutely nuts?" she demanded. "That's my brother!"
He shook his head. "No, it's not," he said quietly.
"Then who the hell is it?"
"Yeah, Ira," came the chuckled reply. "Don't you recognize me?"
"Yes, how could I not?" he snarled. "And you are most definately not Barrel! I'd recognize those eyes anywhere!"
Shock was torn between the two, standing in the center. Her supposed brother on one side, her husband and lover on the other. "What's going on here?" she asked with a sob.
"Darling, come here," Ira coaxed her. "Please." She cried out, dashing into his arms. He glanced back at Barrel. "Fess up," he said. "I know who you are."
"But how?" came the hiss. "I had a perfect disguise!"
"WHAT'S GOING ON!" cried the Queen.
A smile from the visitor. "You'll soon see, my dear." He then pulled out a small vial, tossing it up in the air and leting in crash at his feet. He was immediately surrounded by a small coud of smoke, which swirled aound him in little whisps. At last it had disapeered--her brother was replace with a tall, black haired man with dark skin, wearing a black cloak.
"I knew it," Ira said."Kalil...Kalil Franklin. I thought I'd never see you again. Why have you come here, to me and my family?"
"Oh, you know why," came the reply. "You damn well know why. To have my revenge."
"That was a long time ago, Kalil," he sighed. "Please, drop it."
"No. I won't. I'm more powerful now then I ever was before, trust me. You know what I want."
"You can't have it."
Shock hid behind her husband. "What does he want?" she asked.
"The baby," came the intruder's reply. "I want the baby dead."
A shocked cry as she grasped her love's hand. "I can't let that happen," Ira said.
He smiled. "Have it your way." He vanished into thin air, reapearing a moment later by Ira's side.
Shock cried out and backed away as Kalil laid a hand on his shoulder. He grinned for a second, before straightening his face and hardening his grip on the shoulder. Immediatley Ira was overcome with pain, collapsing to the floor as his energy was slowly sucked from him. He clutched at the hand in agony, screaming in pain.
"Stop!" Shock cried. "For the love of God, stop! Please, let's talk about this!" He said nothing, just continued his attrack. Ira grew weak, his vision blurring. "Please, stop it!" She tried again.
"I want your word that you won't try and do me any harm, or call the police."
"You have it."
"I want you to swear on your wife's life," he demanded.
"I swear, now please, let him go."
Slowly he dug his nails from Ira's flesh, allowing him to shrink towards the floor. Shock ran to his side, crouching down.
"My love, are you alright? Please speak to me..."
He coughed. "Holy...he's gotten stronger...."
"What's going on here?" she demanded. "Why is he trying to kill our child?"
A sigh as he tried to stand, unsuccessful. "It's a long story, my dear..." He turned back to Kalil, still grimacing. "Please, I apologize for what happened so long ago, it was wrong. I already said all this back then, but I'll say it again. Can we forget about this? I can't allow you to take my youngest child."
"Ira, I know what I came for, and I will not let you side-track me. But I'll let you try to bargain your way out." A grin. "Perhaps we can make a deal."
"Oh, thank-you," the King breathed. "Meet me tommorrow at 8:00, the graveyard."
"Agreed then. Good-bye Ira, Shock. Enjoy your last few days with your unborn child." He let out an evil laugh as he pulled another vial from his jacket, holding it up. He tossed upon the ground, the same cloud of smoke appeared. As it slowly vanished, so did he.
Ira just shuddered as he sat on the floor, shaking with fright. He rose with pain, stumbling towards the stairs.
"Darling?" asked his wife. "I don't understand." He didn't answer, just headed up the steps and towards the master bedroom. Here she took a seat, watching as he pulled off his shirt, stained red. He peered at his shoulder; deep wounds could be seen where Kalil had driven his fingers in, blood still pouring out. A grimace as he stared at it, using the shirt to soak up the worst of it.
"Here, let me help you," Shock offered as she went to get the peroxide. She rose and headed to the adjoining bathroom, returning with the bottle and a cloth. Soaking the rag she laid it on his shoulder gently. He tensed for a moment, before loosening his muscles. "Now, tell me what all of that was about," she said as she touched his arm.
A sigh was released from his throat. "Oh, Shock, I never imagined this would happen," he told her. "It was all so long ago..."
"Darling, what?"
He looked down. "He's trying to get revenge against me, you might say. Revenge for an event that took place a long time ago."
"That much I had figured out. Why does he want revenge though?"
Ira looked up into her eyes. "Promise me that if I tell, you won't be upset."
"I promise. I'm you're wife, you can trust me."
A nod. "Alright." He looked at the wall. "It was quite a while ago, over 30 years I guess. I was living by my lonesome self in the human world, all alone. I had not a single friend, no-one I could trust and talk to. I was an other-world creature living in the human world, a misfit. That was until I met Kalil, however.
"Kalil was a simply amazing person. Having been involved in witchcraft and plenty of paranormal such things, he was familiar with Halloween Town. I trusted him dearly, talked with him about anything and everything. I didn't want to ever loose his friendship. But I did.
"Now at one time, Kalil had once loved a young woman named Joanne. Jo, as he called her out of affection, had a baby son, Brandon. But Jo and Kalil divorced soon enough, and he was left to tend for the baby on his own. At the same time he led a full time job at a local bar, and was away most every evening. Being his best friend, he trusted me in the care of his boy. I took on this task easily enough; thought it'd be a cinch. It wasn't.
"It was Brandon's second month under my care. He was playing in the living room, while I sat in the kitchen paying some bills. Of course, being a Halloween creature, I often flirted with danger. Not an uncommon thing for us, as you know. This being the case, my house was in no way childproof; matchs, gasoline, knives, and swords were among my knicknacks tossed around the place. Around this time now, Brandon was around 3, and his own father had a very similar collection at home. The boy had experience with lighters, matches, and the works. Not such a good deal.
"That day I had been experimenting with my own homemade chemicals. Seeing if I could make a highly combustible type of chemical using common household ingredients. I succeeded, of course; I also left these objects lying around. I was very careful not to make a mess with these objects; 'course Brandon wasn't so careful. He knocked the mixture over himself; he didn't cry though. This was fine with though. He began to play with the matches now, and this whole time I ignored him; I had totally forgotten about him. So of course, it came as a huge surprise to me when I heard the little guy screaming from the living room. I hurried out to him, to find him burning quite brightly. I knew immediately what had happened; but yet I did nothing. Didn't react, didn't move. Just watched as he burned. This was my chemcial, and it had worked, better then I had hoped. He burned so brightly, the mixture had to be worth a fortune. So I watched him, just to see what would happen, how long it would take him to burn. Even as my house started to reek of burnt flesh, I watched him. Till he was but a pile of ashes on the floor. Inhumane, yes. But I thought only of the money; he burnt very well, extremely well in fact. To cinders! Remarkable, I thought. But then it hit me; I had killed my best friend's son. What would I do?
"Needless to say, Kalil was furious. I had no idea what I hadn't saved the lad, but I knew it was over. I never saw Kalil again, and he swore revenge on me. And that is exactly why he's here."
Shock could hardly react as she sat there. "That's...horrid! The poor boy..."
"Are you angry?"
She shook her head. "No, I suppose not. I have no right to be. But because of your foolishness, our baby is at risk. We need to do something, Ira, to protect him."
"Yes, I know," he replied. "I need to keep you safe, that's what. If he can't get to you, then he can't get the baby. You need to leave Halloween Town, Shock. Get as far away as possible."
"Ira, you know I can't do that; I have my duties as the Pumpkin Queen to tend to."
He sighed as he stood up, fetching a large bandage wrap from the bathroom. He passed it to to his, asking her to wrap it around the arm. Siting back down he allowed her to mend the wound. "I just don't know," he said. "Whatever we do, we need to keep the baby safe..."
She kissed his hair softly. "Listen, don't worry about it. Talk with Kalil tommorrow; try and organize something. All right?"
A nod. "Fine. But if anything happens to you..."
"Nothing will. Don't worry, all right? Everything will be fine."
He sighed once more. "I sure hope."

Ira met Kalil at 8:00 as promised. He was already there, standing upon the spiral hill. "You're already here," he said.
"Ah ha," Kalil smiled. "You've come to bargain for the child's life. You may start pleading now."
A grim skae of his head. "I'm not going to plead, my old friend. I want to know what else I can do, anything else you might accpet in repayment of your son's life."
He shook his head. "No, absolutely not. That was a long time ago when that happened, yes; but the pain I still feel has never gone away. I promised to get back at you, and I will."
"Alright," he replied. "I understand. But please, not my child."
"You then."
He nearly choked. "What? Me?"
"Yes. Your life, or the child's. It's that simple."
"You couldn't possibly."
He laughed. "Don't kid me. I can, and I will. I have no remorse for your death, and as for the actual power, I have that as well. You experienced that last night, when I stole your energy. And I am much more powerful then that, I've been growing stronger over the years. My Gods have been rewarding me."
"Your witchcraft demons? To my disadvantage, yes, they have been rewarding you."
Kalil frowned. "Do not mock me. State your choice, Ira; you life, or the child's."
"Alright, alright," he muttered. "Mine. Happy now?"
"Yes, very."
"But please, just give me one week with my family. Just 7 days to say good-bye."
He thought for a moment. "Very well. One week. But I meet you back here, the same time, same place, next week."
"Yes. Good-bye."
A nod. "Farewell." With that he disapeered into a cloud of smoke.

Ira wasted no time in getting home; he knew a way to fool Kalil yet. Bursting in through the doors, he found Shock playing in the living room with Alisa. "Shock!" he cried. "Shock, I'm back!"
"Oh darling, what did he say?" she asked.
"He offered for me to die instead," he told her.
She gasped in horrow. "Ira, no...."
"No, no, dear, we're not going to let that happen. I know a way to save both me and the baby, though you may not like it."
She raised a hopeful eyebrow. "Continue."
"Well, I know that we have to get me and the child out of here, faraway. But at the same time, you must remain."
"Yes."
"I know how do do that."
She looked into his eyes. "How, Ira, how?"
"Shock, we need to get the baby out of there. Then I can take it and go into hiding, until it's safe."
"But-but, Ira, it's still inside me..."
"Yes, but I know how to get it out. I know a potion, very simple to make but highly effect. It will speed up the process of creation, and the infant shall be ready for birth within the very same day. The child will come out, we'll give him or her a chance to cool off for a while and relax, then I take the little guy or girl to the human world."
"How are we going to to get rid of Kalil though?"
A smile. "I already had an idea. Once he realizes I'm gone, he'll be furious. Totaly insane. But you shall invite him here, and pretend to seduce him. Mind you, no sex. I'll still be your husband. You shall then somehow drug him, and kill him. Simple. Tell him that it would be the perfect revenge against me; send me running and then steal my wife. Because quite honestly, it is."
"Oh, Ira...I really don't know."
He took her hands. "Shock, please..."
"I want you to promise that you'll come back to me."
"I promise."
"Swear on this child's life?"
"I do."
"Fine then," she said at last. "How do we make the potion?"
A smile. "We'll put Alisa to bed first; then comes the potion."

It didn't take long to settle the little girl away. Soon they were settled in the kitchen, a glass of water in one hand and an assortment of ingredients in the other. "Ready?" he asked her.
"I'm ready."
"This is going to be extremely painful, you do know that, right?"
"Yes, but I'm prepared just the same."
He nodded, picking up the glass and one of the ingredients; A dragon scale. Dropping it in, the water turned a bright red. Next came a moth's hair; the mixture turned blue. A wide variety of flavours were added; bee stingers, lizard eyes...a little bit of everything. At last he added a dash of snake venom, sending a cloud of smoke into the air. The drink was a purplish colour, thick and creamy. It actually looked good. He held it up to her encouragingly. "Drink it up, my love."
She accepted the brew nervously, tilting it up to her lips. "Bottoms up, I guess." In one swift gulp she swallowed it all, every last drop. With a deep sigh of relief she wiped her lips. "Tastes awful," she remarked. "Oh my, I'm so tired now...I must rest..."
A nod. "It's supposed to be like that. Come on, I'll go with you; it's going to be a long night."

An hour later, it began. The first of the pains, at first small, then sharp and painful in her stomache. She moaned as she clutched at her belly, shaking Ira awake.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Oh my God Ira..." She grimaced. "It hurts...like fire..." Another flash of pain. "You never told me it'd be this bad."
He touched her arm. "It'll only be for tonight, okay? I'll be here the whole time."
She screamed loudly as a wave of pain belted down her spine. "This is the end, I know I'm going to die...."
"Listen, just breath, alright?" he told her. "Nice deep breaths, in and out, nice and slow."
"Ira!!!" she shouted in pain. He jumped out of the bed, standing by her side.
"You've gotta pull through this, Shock, this is the most difficult part. Just think about it though; tommorrow we'll have our baby, and soon we'll all be safe from Kalil. Because he will kill us all, Shock, if we don't get that child out of here..."
She grabbed his hand, pulling him close to her. "Ira," she gasped, "I need you to call Jack for me. Have him come as soon as possible. I want him here with me, the two men I love the most...."
He nodded, heading directly for the phone. "Yes, my darling. Anything you want."

Sally opened her eyes slowly when she heard the phone rang. Yawning she reached to the bedside table and picked it up, mumbling a hello into the reciever.
"Sally? That you? I need to speak to your husband, and quickly."
She shot awake when she heard Shock cry out in the background. "Goodness, what's the matter?"
"It's a long story, Sal, but I need to speak with Jack."
"Of course." She passed her phone off to her love, who had since woken up.
"Ira, what is it?" he asked.
"Your daughter," came the reply as she cried out once more. "She needs you here, and now."
"Why, what's going on?"
"I'll tell you in brief; there's this guy out there who wants to kill our child for something I did to him a long time ago. The only way to protect both the child and me is to hurry along the process of development, and that's exactly what we're doing; I gave Shock a special potion to do the job, but she's not taking it so well. She wants you with her, for support. Together we can help her pull through this, because she can't do it on her own."
Jack jumped out of bed. "Yes, of course, I'll be right there." He hung up the phone, grabbing his cane and heading off to get dressed.
"What's up?" aasked Sally. He told her quickly as he got his clothes on. "Oh, good heavens," she muttered. "Yes, dear, do go. You're needed down there."
"Thank-you, Sally," he said as he gave her a kiss. "I'll call you when we have some news.

Jack rang the doorbell around 20 minutes later. Ira left Shock's side just long enough to let him in, leading him upstairs. "She's up here," he told him.
Jack nodded as they hurried up the stairs. Bursting into the room he found his daughter lying on her bed, drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. She smiled weakly upon seeing him.
"You look in bad shape," he said sadly.
"Yeah, and I haven't even had the kid yet," she cracked. "This is worse then when I had Alisa, much more painful..." She tensed up briefly, shutting her eyes as the pain whipped though her. "Oh, thank God that you're hear..."
He touched her forehead softly. "Shock, why didn't you tell me sooner that so many lives were at stake here? The baby's, Ira's...now your own. I could have done something."
Her eyes teared up. "I didn't want to make you worry..."
"Yeah, well now I'm even more concerned. Shock, you must be very strong if you want to survive this. I've only seen such a task undertaken twice, and in both cases mother and child ended up dying. You can't end up like that, you have too much to live for. Just take a deep breath, and it'll all be over within a few hours."
"Oh, Jack," she sobbed as Ira sat beside her. "I'm sorry, please don't be angry..."
"I'm not upset dear," he replied. "Don't worry about anything right now. You must concentrate on the situation at hand. Think about your child, your beautiful baby...how wonderful it will be when you finally have her! Your husband by your side, watching as your little creation enters the world..." He closed his eyes, smiling. "Oh, my heart is already pounding with excitement."
Ira laid beside her, stroking her cheek gently. "Just picture it...won't it be great! We'll dispose of Kalil once and for all, then live together as one big happy family. You, me, Alisa, and the baby. Just us. But you must be strong! For me, for Jack."
A nod. "I'll try. By God, I'll try. Just stay here with me."
"We will, my love."

As Ira had predicted, it was a very long evening. But somehow, they all pulled through it. Ira and Jack took turns caring for Shock, occassionally setting a damp cloth on her forehead to cool her down. The pain itself came in waves; there were times of great agony, and others of some comfort. By 9:00 the next morning, all pain had vanished and Shock felt quite well. Her stomache now swelled to well beyond the size it had been before, she felt on top of the world. She smiled as she gave Jack a hug.
"Thanks for coming, dad," she said. "I feel much better now."
"That's wonderful," he replied. "No more pains?"
"Nope," she replied. "The baby's done growing, I believe. Ready to be born. But think how the townspeople will react when they see the size of me!"
He shook his head. "No, no work today. I already called the mayor while you were showering, explained the entire situation. Told him you were going to have the baby today sometime. He said he'd pass the word along."
She frowned. "Jack..."
He just shrugged. "You're still my baby girl, you know. Just looking out for you. Besides, I'd guess that by lunchtime you'll be ready to have that baby."
"I suppose you're right." A kiss upon the cheek. "See you later."
"So long, dear. Did you want me to take Alisa with me, so you won't have to bother with finding a sitter when it happens?"
"Oh, thanks. Alisa, wanna go with granddad to his house?"
The girl ran out from the kithcen, wiping her mouth. "Yea!!! Me get on shoes!" Hauling them on, she was soon ready. She gave her mother and step-father a kiss, running out the door. Shock just laughed as she waved good-bye to the both of them.
"So long, guys. Have fun!"
Closing the door, she sat with Ira upon the sofa. He just smiled, touching her stomache softly.
"Any time now," he said. "Any moment, and our little guy will be ready to come out."
"It's going to be soon," she replied. "Extremely soon. We'd better go pack for my stay in the hospital, get a diaper bag ready. How odd that sounds now..."
He gave her a kiss. "Come along, then, my queen. Let's get ready for the big moment."

Shock made the announcement at precisely 10:37; it was now or never. Nodding speechlessly Ira ran to get her bag, taking her arm and leading her out to the car.
He drove as fast as the speed limit would allow, to a hospital not far from their home. He burst through the emergency room doors with her, hurrying to the front desk.
"Excuse me, my wife here is about to have a child," he said to the woman at the front desk. She just looked up, surprised.
"I thought she wasn't due for at least 2 months yet."
"It's a long story, but it's coming now."
"Yes, right. Hold on a minute..." She pressed a button behind the counter, and imediately a team of doctors and nurses came out, wheelchair in tote.
"Take a seat, Mrs. Skellington," said one of the doctors. We'll take you to your room."
"Thank-you." She accepted the chair, allowing them to wheel her to her room. There she was helped onto her bed.
"Now, how long have been been feeling these pains?"
A chuckle. "These ones? Around half an hour."
He nodded. "Mmm-hmm. Well, you've got a while yet. Call your relatives if you want, let them know the news. I'll be back regularly to check on you, but press the buzzer if you need me before then."
"Thanks, doc," she said as he left the room.
Ira smiled as he sat beside the bed, taking the hand of his love. "It's soon going to happen," he told her. "How are you feeling?"
"Pretty good," she replied. "Compared to last night, this is going to be nothing. I'm only in a bit of discomfort, nothing much."
"Shall we call your family?"
A smile. "Of course."

Jack and Sally were the first to know. They reacted with great delight, praising her and Ira before she moved on to inform her siblings.
Barrel was the next they called. He sounded drowsy, as if just waking up.
"Barrel, I've got wonderful news!" she cried. "I'm going to have the baby soon!"
He coughed at that, and she could hear Julius beside him asking what was wrong. "What? So sudden? You're only 7 months along though!"
"Me and Ira kinda speeded it up," she replied. "See, the life of both Ira and the baby are at risk here; I'm going to have my child, then the kid and Ira are going to leave town for a while while I get rid of Kalil."
"Kalil?"
"The guy who wants to kill them. He's an old friend of Ira's, come back for revenge."
It was clear how concerned he was. "Are you going to be alright?"
"Oh yes, without a doubt. Everything's gonna be fine. Anyways, I'm alright, and the baby's coming soon."
"Oh, that's magnificent, sis. I'll be rooting for ya the whole time."
She smiled into the reciever. "Thanks, bro. See ya."
"Ciao."
The next ones she called were Lock and then Kyrene. Both reacted with confusion at the fact that, technically, she was only supposed to be seven months along. Yet they were pleasantly surprised when everything had been explained, and gave her their best wishes. Shock replaced the reciever with a smile, taking her husband's hand. "Well, all we have to do now is wait," she said.
"I don't know if I can do that," came the answer. "This is so thrilling, Shock...soon we're going to have our child, right here in our arms. Oh my God...my own little piece of me. A little bit of us both, entertwined to make one."
"Amazing," she sighed. "Simply unbelieveable."
The doctor came bak then to check up on her again. "And how are we, Shock?"
"Okay," she replied.
"Relaxed?"
"Not really, no. I'm too anxious, and the baby's rreally starting to put up a fight."
He nodded. "Yes, won't be long now. Want something for the pain?"
A grateful chuckle. "Oh, thank-you. I don't think I could take any more."
"Right then, I've got some right in this cupboard I believe..." He headed over to a shall shelf on
the other side of the room, pulling down a small bottle. "Ah, here we go. Take one of thse now, it should help numb some of the pain. It won't take care of it all, but...."
"Yes, thanks. Oh, it's going to be soon, doc..."
He gave her the pill, watching as she poked it into her mouth. "The nurses will be right here for if you need them. You're taking it very well so far, I'm pleased with that. Anyways, I'll be back in a little while." He took off, leaving the couple alone. Ira just smiled at his love as he gave her a kiss.
"Are you thirsty or anything? Want some food?"
She shook her head. "No, just stay here with me. Please."
He stroked her head softly, admiring her beauty. "Alright, my love. I'll be right here."

The hours ticked by slowly, and soon Shock was ready. She took deep breaths as she was told to, grabbing Ira's hand and clutching it as the doctor and nurses readied themselves to deliver the baby. He smoothed down her forehead softly.
"How are you?" he asked.
"In agononizing pain," she gasped. "Oh, it's now or never, Ira. I can't hold on any longer..."
"Oh, glory be..." he gave her an excited kiss as the doctor moved into position.
"Okay, Mrs. Skellington, you know how it all works from here on. Just take nice, easy breaths, deep and calming."
She nodded. "Oh, why can't this be nice and easy like it was with Alisa," she groaned behind the pain.
A laugh from the doctor. "Nobody said it was simple, ma'am. Now, when I tell you to, push really hard...."

After what seemed like hours and a lot of painful screaming, the joyous occasion finally happened; Shock gave birth to a handsome baby boy. "Good work, Mrs. Skellington!" the doctor cried. "It's a son!"
"Oh my...." she sobbed as the doctor cleansed the child, handing it off to Ira. The proud father accepted it with tears in his eyes, sitting beside his wife. He grinned at the child, totally in disbelief.
"My little guy...my own son! Just look at him, Shock!"
The exhausted mother grinned at the little boy, reaching out for him. Ira passed off the infant, allowing Shock to hold him. "What a beautiful little boy," she said as her husband ran a hand threw her dark and matted hair. "What shall we name him, dear?"
He paused as he eyed the child. "I've no idea, really. No idea...how about Richard?"
She shook her head. "I like Alex more."
A shiver. "No way. Well, I've always liked the name Drake."
She tumbled this over in her mind. "Drake...Drake Bradley Skellington...I like it."
"I guess that's it then. Drake." He grinned at the child. "Beautiful, isn't he?"
"Sure is," she sighed. "Oh, I don't want you to leave with him, I already love him so much...what if I can't kill Kalil?"
"You will, trust me," he smiled. "Just a quick poisoning and he's gone. That's all there is to it."
"I can't believe I'm plotting to murder someone. I'm the queen, for goodness sakes! I'm supposed to be locking up lunatics like us in jail!"
He touched her hand. "But this is different; we're trying to catch us a murder. Because, if I know Kalil, he hasn't got a totally clean record. No way. I know he's killed; he won't hesitate to do it again."
"I know," she sighed. "Here, would you mind taking our son off my hands for a bit? I'm so tired..."
"Right; the doctors need him anyways." He took Drake from her, laying a kiss upon her cheek. "I love you, Shock."
She smiled as she closed her eyes. "I love you too, Ira..."

They were visited the next day by Shock's entire family. Alisa was delighted to see her new little brother, clamouring next to the baby, who was sleeping in his mother's arms. "Mommy, mommy, it's a baby!" she cried.
A smile. "I know, dear. It's your baby brother."
Jack grinned at his daughter proudly. "Good job, Shock. You and Ira must be very proud."
A huge beam of pride from the father. "Indeed we are. I couldn't be happier."
Sally cooed at her grandchild. "What a sweetheart!"
"Indeed," said Barrel. "My little nephew. Quite the treasure, eh Julius?"
"Certainly is," he smiled.
Lock gave his wife a hug as he stared at the tiny child. "Remember when our little Laurella was just born?"
"Certainly do," she replied. "Shock, we're so proud of you."
"Couldn't be more happier," Kyrene commented as Jacob nodded.
"Thanks, everyone," the mother replied. "I know it's a bit odd, having him born so early and all, but I'm sure you all know the situation..."
"And we're quite worried," Sally frowned.
She sighed. "I know, and I'm sorry. But in a few days time, Ira will be leaving town with Drake. They'll be journeying to the human world, where they'll be safe from Kalil. I will then kill Kalil myself, by poisoning him."
"Need any help?" piped Lock. "I'm quite good with a gun."
"Actually, I'd like to you to stay close by in case I need your assistance. You never know. But I'll proceed to kill him, while Ira and the baby will be safe in the human world. He knows some good places there, he has a nice warm home in France that's still listed as his property. He has money stored away in the banks there, he's ready for anything."
"When will they be leaving?" Kyrene asked.
"Probably Monday morning, to give us an evening at home together and so they can still be long gone. Enough time to say good-bye..." She touched her baby's cheek softly. "It's going to be hard, but it's the only thing we can do."
Jack touched her hand softly. "Don't worry about it, dear. Everything'll be fine."
A sigh. "I hope so, Jack. I hope so...."

The family returned home the next day; after picking up Shock, Ira and Alisa drove her and Drake home, where they had already assembled a crib for him in the master bedroom. Ira gave his queen a hug after they put him in for a nap, kissing her hair softly as he gazed at their sleeping son.
"You know," he said, "this is this first time in ages that I've actually been able to wrap my arms around you. It feels good."
"I know," she sighed. "Hey, where'd Alisa go?"
"Over to her friend Judy's house. Went over the second we got back. They didn't get to finish their game of dolls last night."
"That's my girl," she chuckled, looking back down at Drake, "He's a wonderful little boy, isn't he Ira? Simply gorgeous. And he's ours, all ours. I carried your child in my stomache for seven months, went through pain so unbearable...but I'd do it all over again, in a heartbeat!"
Another kiss. "I'm still in shock here. I can't believe I finally have a child of my own. Two children! 200 years ago, I'd never have seen any of this coming.
"I never saw any of this coming two years ago," she said. "Until you came back into my life." A happy smile. "That was one of the happiest days of my life, besides our wedding day."
"And within a few days I'll be leaving with Drake," he said sadly. "To escape certain death." She just touched his face gently. "You'll be back, remember? And everything will be fine once again."
"Oh, I hope so," he told her as the doorbell screeched downstairs. "Ah, better go get that." Taking her hand he led her downstairs, pulling open the door to find Jack, Barrel, and Julius. "Ah, hey you three," Shock smiled. "Please, come in!"
They stepped past the door, allowing Ira to close it. "Just decided to see how you all were doing," Jack said. "Baby settle in?"
"Sleeping upstairs," his sister said. "What a little doll he is! And talking about babies, how's it going Barrel? You settled in with Julius now?"
"Very nicely, actually," he replied after sticking out his tongue playfully at her taunt. "My old apartment is already rented out, so there's no going back now. I'm quite surprised at that actually, cause it was a piece of crap."
"Royal vibes," Shock smiled. "So where's my other siblings gone off to?"
"They're all busy," Jack replied. "So's Sally, she's off with some of her girl friends. So I called Barrel and Julius up, to see if they wanted to come visit you."
"What lovely company," came the answer. "Ira, come here, your hair is perfectly awful..."
"I wonder why that is," Barrel muttered as his eyes wandered up the wall innocently.
"Me too," she smiled as he licked the tips of her fingers, smoothing down her love's hair. "I feel as if I'm taking care of a baby here."
"I like to be pampered, is that so bad?" he whined.
"Course not, dear. Just a little immature."
"Ha ha. So funny."
"Aren't I, though?" Laughter.
A sudden knock came at the door. Shock glanced up, surprised. "I wonder who that is...?" she murmered. Heading over she hauled open the door, to find a delivery boy holding a lovely bouquet of flowers.
"Delivery for Mr. and Mrs. Skellington," he said in a nasal voice.
"Oh, how lovely," she smiled as she signed the clipboard he held out. "Thank-you very much."
He passed her the flowers carefully. "Have a nice day, your majesty."
"You too." Closing the door she smelled the bouquet; it was lovely. She read the tag aloud as she headed back to the living room;
"To Shock and Ira, congratulations on your new arrival." She chuckled slightly as she strived to read all the names, which had been written on a seperate card. "Love Jack, Sally, Lock, Barrel, Kyrene, Elizabeth, Laurella, Julius, and Jacob." A little sigh. "Oh, thank you, everyone. They're lovely. Aren't they, dear?"
"Indeed," he smiled."Thank-you, this wasn't neccesary..."
"Oh, yes it was," the old Pumpkin King insisted. "Anyways, I guess we'll be off now, Sally made me promise not to be out too long as she doesn't like me going off without her anymore. Doesn't think I can take care of myself. I'm not alone though, I have Barrel and Julius with me..."
A little smile from his eldest daughter. "You're a crotchety old man, Jack, admit it."
He frowned. "I never will, and you know it."
"Yeah, I guess so." A hug. "Thanks, dad. And you too little bro." She hugged Barrel too, as well as Julius. Ira meanwhile settled on a handshake and a hearty slap on the back from each of them.
"See you later, you guys," Julius smiled as they headed outdoors. "And congratulations!"

The day passed much too quickly, and soon it was Sunday evening. After putting both Alisa and Drake down to sleep, Shock and Ira decided to simply cuddle up on the sofa together. The Queen cozied into her husband's loving embrace, kissing him gently.
"Oh, I don't want you to have to leave tommorrow," she sniffed. "I love you so much, I love Drake so much...my little Drake! Oh, for heavens sakes, take good care of him! Whatever you do, Ira, bring him home safe to me!"
A nod. "I will, love. He's my son, too, you know."
"Oh, I know, it's just...motherly instincts kicking in, I guess."
He smiled gently. "Don't worry about it. We'll both be fine at my place in France. It's a nice spot, in a good neighborhorhood of Paris. Large and spacious, it's great. I actually called around to some old friends, believe it or not, got them to deck the place out in baby stuff. Diapers, a crib, clothes, the whole kit and caboodle. Even packed with milk and food for myself."
"Quick thinker," she said. "Well, I'm certainly going to miss you...."
"So am I," he sighed. "But I'll be back, both of us will. And then we'll be a big family once again, You, me, Alisa, and little Drake."
"I sure hope so," she said quietly as she hugged him a little tighter. "Oh, I love you so much, I don't want you to leave me..."
"It'll only be for a little while," he told her. "We'll be back soon." A tear fell down her face, and he kissed it away. "I swear to you, we will be back. And I never break my promises."

Ira and Drake left the next day at around 9:00 AM. After a tearful farewell from Shock and Alisa they headed off, the baby safe in his little carrier. Giving the child a kiss upon the head Ira headed toward the graveyard, where he would be transported to the Human world.
The walk there seemed oddly long and unbearable, but they reached it at last. Without hesitation Ira headed up to one of the many mausoleums, pulling open the door. This was indeed the oldest form of transportation to and from the human world that existed in Halloween Town. After taking a deep breath he wrapped a protective arm around his son, heading inside the darkened tomb.

He opened his eyes a moment later to find himself exactly where he wanted to be. The glorious streets of Paris, where he had last made his home before heading back to find Shock, his first love. He stood outside a large white house, huge with white pillars out in the front. After smiling to himself gently he headed up the front steps, heading into his former home.
Everything was exactly as he wanted it as he toured the place, heading up the staircase. Upon first having this house built, he had been in a mood for the Renaissance. In this state he had plastered it in pictures by DaVinci and Raphael, Donatello and Van Gogh. Elaborate sculptures could also be spotted around the palce. He had also decorated it in some very odd objects as well; a few shrunken heads, a human skeleton...he didn't know what had inspired him to do so, it had just happened.
His friends had done exactly as he had asked them to, though. A playpen could be seen in the living room. Upon touring the home, he noticed a crib that sat in the bedroom. Plenty of milk sat in the refirigerator, and bottle stood in the cupboard.
A little smile as he glanced down at his now sleeping child. Carefully he lifted the boy up and out of his carrier, setting him down in the playpen and brining the blankets already set in there around him. Giving him a kiss, he headed into the kitchen to grab a glass of water. He was just finishing his drink and setting the glass into the sink when he heard a voice from the front porch.
"Ira? Are you already here?" "Yeah," he called back, heading out to meet his guest. He grinned upon stepping into the living room, to find an old human pal of his. Laura de Lavoir, a most devoted friend. The two embraced each other, laughing with joy.
"Ira!" Laura cried, pulling away and flinging the dark hair from her eyes. "Where the hell have you been, disapeering for two years like that?"
"You really wanna know? Take a seat, my good friend." Each of them did that, Ira in his favourite leather armchair and Laura upon the sofa.
"So tell me," she insisted as she straighted her long black dress. "Obviously you've been busy if you've got a kid. Who's the mother?"
"I'm getting to that," he laughed. "I'd better start at the beginning I suppose. Well, before I left here I was really depressed. Upset, you know."
"You, depressed? Why didn't you say something, Ira, you know I would have helped you."
"Cause my depression was related to something you'd never believe in," he replied. "Another life altogether, in a place you've never heard of before. Now I'm telling you the absolute truth here..."
"And I'll believe whatever you tell me," she told him. "You always have in the past."
"Thank you. Well, the place I left for is a place called Halloween Town, and it was in this place that I grew up."
"Wait," she interrupted. "Halloween Town? Why is that name so familiar to me....isn't that the place from the stories, the magnificent kingdom ruled by a king named Jack?"
"Not Jack," he replied simply. "It's Shock now, Queen Shock Skellington the first."
"I see," Laura nodded. "Is this where you were? Cause if you say yes, then I will believe you."
"It is," Ira told him him. "I grew up in Halloween, the land where October the thirty-first is created. And I went back there, to find the girl I had loved as a teenager. Well, no longer a girl. A grown woman, a wonderful and exquistite woman. She's also the Queen."
A nod. "So you're the King?"
He just shrugged. "I guess so. I don't care to think of myself that way. So anyways, the boy in the playpen over there is my son Drake. I was forced to bring him here today, for reasons too long and complicated to explain right now..."
"Of course."
"As well, I'd like to thank you for getting all this stuff ready for our arrivial. I really appreciate it, and my wife does as well."
"You married her?"
"Yep. Oh, I love her a lot, she's so wonderful. I'm so happy now, Laura, you wouldn't believe it. I've got a step-daughter back in Halloween Town as well, she's only four. What a doll she is, I'm telling you. She likes to play this one game, she's the executioner and I'm the person she's going to kill. sometimes she'll be cutting off my head, other times hanging me..."
She gave him a strange look. "Sounds kind of morbid to me."
"Nah, all kids in Halloween Town are like that. The adults as well, including me. I mean, it's Halloween here, of course we're all demented freaks." A little smile as he sat back in his chair. "I love it though. I went back to find Shock, I couldn't stay away from her any longer. See we used to be going out once a long time ago, when I was only 16. That was in the late twentieth century though. I went back last year, 2235 AD. I spent 216 years apart from the girl I loved."
"That's quite old," Laura nodded, amazed. "That's remarkable!"
"Oh, there's older," he shrugged. "Why Jack, Shock's father; he's in his 744 years old! Imagine the places he's been, the things he's done! He was born in the year 1492, right into the days of the Renaissance. He watched the premiere of many Shakespeare plays, he was there when Elizabeth the First was crowned queen. He watched as many of the Halloween Town witches were hunted out and destroyed during the days of the witch trials. And now he's living in this world, a place of so many technological advanges, of electricity and flying cars, when a person can just hop in a space ship and head off to Jupiter. These are things the humans of today's world take for granted. But when you compare that to the things Jack Skellington has surely done..." A little shake of his head. "It seems so small."
"That's fascinating," she told him. "I mean really, it is. He was born during the Elizabethean era? How fantastic! You mean to tell me that he's watched humanity develop from that to what it is today?"
"Exactly. Truly awe-inspiring, eh?"
A laugh. "Indeed, Ira. Well, I'm glad you're so happy now, that's what matters. I'd better be going now though, I'm late for work. Just wanting to know how you were making out."
He nodded, standing up and giving her a hug. "See you, Laura."
She kissed him twice in the French custom, once on either side of the head. He did the same. Au revoir, mon amie," she said.
He smiled as she headed for the front door. "I'll write this time, I promise."
"You'd better!" A final wave. "Check ya later, pal."
"See ya round, Laura."

Shock sat later that day with Alisa, the both of them eating a big bowl of ice cream. "I miss daddy," sighed the little girl miserably. "Mommy, when's he and my baby brother comin' back?"
"Soon, darling," Shock reassured her. "Just as soon as we can straighten things out with Kalil.
A frown. "I don't like him."
The Queen smiled at her little girl. "Neither do I dear. But you know, that's the way it is sometimes. You don't always get along with everyobody I suppose."
"He's a bad man though."
"Yes, he's very bad. But don't worry, he won't be around much longer, I promise you. And then we'll go back to being a big happy family again!"
"Me hopes so," Alisa said quietly. "Cause me weally misses Daddy."
A little sigh. "Me too, Alisa. Me too."

Shock sat in the living room that evening, waiting for Kalil's arrival. She had worn something seductive and revealing, just as Ira had suggested; short leather skirt and a tight-fitting blouse, see through and quite revealing. She knew Kalil would love it; Ira sure did. She was all prepared for his arrival, a lie made up for any situation. There was no way that this could go wrong. Two drinks were already prepared and waiting in the kitchen; one laced with Deadly Nightshade, one not. After coming on to Kalil she would go to get the drinks, and watch as he unsuspectingly killed himself. It'd be perfect.
She let out a sigh as she glanced at the pictures on the wall. Standing up, she headed over to one of them, of herself, Ira, and Alisa. With a sad smile she kissed her husband's face, then tracing it with a finger. Since his departure that morning with Drake, she had been going nearly out of her mind with worry. She had been trying to make up for it by taking Alisa out for treats and surprises, but nothing could cover up her concern. At the moment, her daughter was up at her grandparent's home; it had been Shock's desire to keep the girl out of the way while she was trying to get rid over Kalil. She didn't need the tyke standing by as she poisoned him.
The doorbell rang at exactly 8:00. Taking a deep breath she headed over to answer it, opening the door. There stood Kalil, who smiled as he brushed a strang of hair from his face. He stepped inside, not waiting for an invitation.
"Good evening, Shock. I trust you know what I've come to do."
She nodded. "Yes."
He glanced at her stomache, taking a seat upon the sofa. "You've had the baby?"
"Tuesday. A healthy little boy. A bit premature, but still healthy."
"Where is he now?"
She sighed, sitting beside him. "I've no idea. Ira...he ran away, took the baby with him. Just this morning. He was frightened of you, he didn't want to die...I didn't even get a chance to say farewell to my son..." She grabbed a tissue from a box sitting on the table, pretending to dab at fake tears. She could feel his anger.
"What?" he hissed. "He's gone? I knew I should have killed him right then and there..."
"Never even let me say good-bye. Oh, damn him, damn him to hell...I knew he couldn't be trusted. He betrayed me so wrongly, pretended to love me and then left me. If I ever so much as see him again..."
Kalil sighed angrily. "I'm going to have to go and hunt him down now. Oh, that's going to take far too much work..."
She smiled at him. "Not if I help you."
He was caught off guard by this. "What?"
"I want to help you. Get back at him for what he did to me, to his family. Watch as his worthless hide burns for his misdeeds."
A pleased grin as he scratched his goatee. "This is a side to you I never imagined. I like it."
"So I can assist you?"
"Of course. The more, the merrier." He paused, glancing at her outfit. It was obvious he liked it; the short skirt, the revealing blouse. She crossed her legs seductively, playing with the collar of his leather trenchcoat.
"Do you like it?" she asked him.
"I do."
"I wore it for you."
He licked his lips, grinning. "I'm liking you more and more, Shock."
"Oh, there's plenty to like about me," she said as she pushed him back onto the sofa. "Believe it." She kissed him hungrily, letting his hands slide down her body. He returned the kisses, enjoying this little game.
"Shall I get us some wine?" she asked him with a grin.
"Please do."
She stood up, heading towards the kitchen. He just sat back in his seat, pleased. Ira would be furious knowing at how he had stolen his wife. But Shock didn't seem to care...instead she was coming on to him! But he wasn't going to refuse her; she was an amazingly beautiful woman. He'd be crazy to turn her away.
She returned a moment later, handing him a glass of wine. "Here you go," she said. "Enjoy."
He accepted it, grinning. "You're an amazing woman, Shock."
"I know."
He grinned, bringing the glass to his mouth. He was going to drink, when he paused. This wasn't ordinary wine...it smelled odd. He sniffed at it, immediately frowning as he looked at her. "You lied," he hissed.
She acted confused. "What do you mean?" she asked.
"You lied!" he hollered. "This thing is poisoned! What did you take me for, stupid or something?" He threw the glass at the wall, letting it crash into a million pieces. "Goddammit, I'm no moron! You were going to kill me!"
"Kalil, don't act foolish..."
He was furious. "Oh, foolish, am I? I'll show you foolish..." He pushed her back onto the sofa violently, sitting on top of her as he tore at her blouse. "I'll damn well show you..."
She gasped with fright, shutting her eyes. "Kalil, don't do this, please don't do this...."
"Fuck you, bitch, take it and like it. Seemed quite eager a few minutes ago, didn't ya?"
She trembled with fright as he pulled off his belt, tossing it aside. "Kalil, no..."
He didn't reply, just ripped off her shirt and tossed it aside. He grinned at her, watching her tremble with fright. "If you want, you can just tell me where he is and I won't do it."
She shook her head, crying. "No, I can't..."
"Tell me where he is, Shock."
"I won't."
"You know I'll do it. No sweat off my back. I'll enjoy it, raping the Queen."
She sobbed. "Yes."
"Then tell me."
"No."
A shrug. "Have it your way then." He kissed her, grabbing senselessly at her even as she fought. She tried to scream, push him off of her, anything...
"Just stop struggling, Shock, and it'll be over quicker."
Angry tears rolled down her cheeks as he said these words, praying to God that she'd be saved somehow. Losing all faith she laid still, sobbing uncontrollably. The words he spoke to her were all so familiar; she could hear the voice of her father, her biological father. Feel him on top of her, his hands clawing at her as he ordered her to be quiet. "Shut up and it'll be over sooner," he had said countless times. She could feel his heavy form above her six-year old body. But to scream and cry did no use; she'd simply lay there and let him do as he pleased with her body. And that was what she did now, merely lay there and sobbed. Kalil just smiled, grabbing her and kissing her again. With a finger he traced the outline of her face. A grin.
"You're a beautiful woman, Shock," he told her. "Stunning. Plus you've got a great set of tits. Too bad we couldn't have gotten along better. I could have given you so much. But you had to lie to me. That's fine though; I won't have to live with my disapointment much longer."
Her heart stopped. "What do you mean?" she whispered.
"Oh, I didn't tell you? You're gonna die after this. I'm gonna rape ya, then kill ya. Leave your corpse here for your husband to find; I know he'll be back. Just think at how surprised he'll be to find you..."
"Kalil, you can't do this...please..."
"Then tell me where he is."
"I can't."
A shrug. "Whatever. Just shut up and take what you've got coming to ya." And with that he began his attack on her again, his hands and lips all over her body as he tugged at her skirt. He had just pulled off his own shirt when the door burst open. Shock turned, bleary eyed, to see him...
"Ira!' she cried. "Ira, do something!"
His face turned cold as he glared at Kalil. "Get the fuck off my wife," he hissed, holding his son close to him. "I'm warning you, Kalil, get up."
He smiled, hopping up with a shrug. "Geez, touchy."
Shock just sobbed, rushing to her husband. He laid his coat over her bare skin, kissing her. "Are you alright?" he asked her as she took her son.
A nod as she wiped her tears. "Yes, fine. I...I didn't get him to take the poison."
He nodded. "I know, but don't worry. I've got another plan." He pulled out a gun, aiming it at Kalil's head. The man gasped upon seeing the weapon. "Ira--you wouldn't. You couldn't, not me...your old friend..."
He laughed. "Ha, funny. Friend indeed. You tried to rape my wife, dammit. Tried to kill me, my baby. No, I'm not going to show you any mercy this time. You're dead."
"Please," he begged, "one more chance..."
He shook his head. "No. I already gave you too many." He turned slightly towards Shock. "Go call the police. Tell them we've got him." She nodded, hurrying off. He just turned back to Kalil. "Too bad, isn't it?" he asked, not lowering the pistol. "Too bad things had to end this way. I suppose it's my fault really, but I apologized endlessly for that. You wouldn't let it happen though--but oh well. You're going to jail now, bud, and you won't be out for a long, long time."
Shock returned from the kitchen, setting the baby down in a stroller already set up. Ira glanced over at her. "Did you do it?" he asked.
"Yes," she replied.
"And you're alright now?"
"Now that you're here? Yes."
"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner..."
"Don't worry about it."
He smiled, never letting the gun down. He glanced at her blouse, shredded and lying in pieces on the floor. "Too bad about your shirt. It was one of my favourites."
"Don't worry about it, dear. It's over now."
The police arrived a few minutes later, taking Kalil away. Shock was greatly relieved as he was dragged off, hugging her husband tightly as the cops shut the door behind them.
"Oh, Ira," she sobbed. "I was so frightened, you came just in time...he was really going to do it."
He kissed her. "I was so worried about you. I came to the realization that I shouldn't be hiding, leaving him to you. I mean, look at what almost happened! I had to do something."
"Was the gun loaded?" she asked.
A smile. "Of course not." Another kiss as he glanced over at Drake; he was fast asleep. "He's a great kid," he said. "Sleeps rather well, actually, hardly wakes up at all in the night."
"Kinda like you," she replied. "Mr. I-Could-Sleep-Though-A-Nuclear-War."
He shrugged. "Hey, it's a good quality to possess." He released her briefly, picking up the boy. "Oh my God, I can't believe this. I've got a son! We've got a son! I'm so proud of you, Shock. You were so brave thoughout all of this whole ordeal with Kalil; you never showed any fear, not for a moment. Good work."
She smiled. "Thank-you."
Ira nodded, heading up the stairs to put the sleeping infant in his crib. He and Shock watched over him for a while, holding hands.
"I missed you both so much," said the queen. "Alisa cried for you when you left."
"She's at Jack's, I take it?"
"Yes, I just wanted her gone while I tried to get rid of Kalil."
"She's a smart thinker as well. No flies on you, are there?"
"Certainly not." She shivered, allowing him to wrap his arm around her as they headed to the master bedroom. "Oh Ira, I was so frightened. He was really going to do it...and then he was going to kill me! Oh, Christ, he was going to kill me!"
He kissed her hair as they stepped inside their room. "Good Lord...my wife, my sweet, beloved wife...my one and only true love. I could never endure that, I could never survive without you." He embraced her, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. "Now that I've got you, I can't allow myself to loose you." Another kiss. "Fuck, Shock, you mean so much to me, so goddamn much. To think of losing you..." he trailed off, uttering a little moan. He pulled her closer to him, as if to reassure himself that she was indeed there and safe.
"Shh, it's alright now. I'm fine," she tried to soothe him.
"No, you don't understand. How much I love you." He placed his head on her shoulder, not wanting her to see the tears. But she lifted his face up, looking directly into his eyes.
"You're crying," she said softly, dabbing at the wet stains. "My dearest Ira. I love you too, enough to give you a son. Enough to carry your child around in my stomache for seven months. A soul mate is incredibly difficult to find, but I know I've got mine."
A small smile as he held his head close to hers. "Thanks, Shock. More then you would ever imagine."

The night was relatively peaceful, except for the few times Drake woke up. Other then that, though, it was fairly quiet.
Drake woke up wanting his bottle at around 7:30 AM. Giving up trying to sleep Shock pulled herself out of her husband's embrace, hauling on a housecoat as she took her beloved child downstairs. Grabbing a bottle from the fridge she warmed it briefly in the microwave, before taking a seat with her baby in the living room. A sigh escaped her lips as she gazed at him. He was so beautiful....and hers, all hers. Together she and Ira had created this child, and together they would raise it. She had to be the luckiest woman in all the world. With a smile she gave her child a little kiss. "Welcome home," she whispered to little Drake silently. He just drank his bottle peacefully. A little chuckle as she picked up the phone, dialing Jack's number. He and Sally had demanded that she phone them the first chance she got, to know what the story was.
Sally picked up, sounding tired. "Hello?" she grumbled.
"Mom?" Shock replied. "How ya doing?"
The former queen perked up. "My daughter? Oh, are you alright? Tell me everything!!!"
"It's fine now, Kalil is in jail and we're all great. Ira's back now as well, he came back last night."
"So he and Drake are okay?"
"Yes," she nodded into the reciever. "Fine. What about Alisa?"
"Oh wonderful. A little bit concerned she was, but she's fine. She slept between me and your father last night. They're both still sound asleep, God bless them. I've got to tell you though, dear, we were all so worried about you. Who knew what that awful man might have done to you...."
A shudder. "Oh, indeed. Well, I best be off, I wanted to call my other siblings as well."
"Oh, alright dear. See you later."
"Bye." Hanging up she began to punch in another phone number; Barrel's. The phone rang four times before he picked up.
"What?" he asked heatedly.
"Whoa, calm down there," she replied instantly. "Just wanted to let you know I'm still alive."
She could tell he didn't mean it. "Oh, I'm sorry, sis. I didn't get a wink of sleep last night, I was so upset I mean..."
"Don't worry about it," she giggled.
"How are you?" he immediately asked. "Tell me what happened."
"Well, he arrived at 8:00 as he promised alright. I had the drink already made and ready in the kitchen. So I proceeded to come on to him, weaving a couple of lies and such. You knew that part of the plan, right?"
"Yep."
"So that went fine. I had him so close to drinking it, so close. But he kind of knew it was poisoned..."
"Oh, my God," he breathed. "What did he do?"
"He tried to rape me then," she said slowly. "It was so scary, Barrel, I mean it. I've never been so horrified....and then he was gonna kill me."
"I knew something had gone wrong," he cried. "Oh, Christ, Shock, are you alright? Did he..."
"No, he didn't get a chance to," she replied. "Ira came back just in the knick of time. Found him about to do it."
"Oh, that's wonderful," he breathed. "I'm so glad you're alright, sis, I really am. So's Julius, he wants you to know that."
"Tell him I appreciate that," she smiled.
"He says 'you're welcome'. Well, I'm proud of ya, Shock, good. As for me, I'm gonna hit the hay now. This time maybe I'll actually be able to sleep."
"Alright then. Good night, bro. Love you."
He smiled into the receiver. "Night, sis. Love you too."
