...the response was incredible........
Khiry Malik comes from a family richly rooted in poetry and art....
His brother, Terry Moore, His mother, Mary Moore, and her Mother the late Sallie Williams, are all poets.
At the funeral of Khiry's Great Aunt, Evna Mitchell,
Khiry Malik penned the heartfelt poem
entitled Rain, as a means of comforting his mother, who was shaken by the death,
Mrs.Moore then sent the poem to all of her friends, some of which passed the poem on to others,
the poem was featured on the obituaries at several funerals.....
The response from the few poems that Khiry had released was so great that Khiry soon found it almost impossible to not share his works........
The Date.........June 1997...
The opening of the poetry club "Aunties" was supposed to mark the spoken word debut of Khiry Malik as a poet....Khiry had worked there as a photographer, but gave up photography momentarily due to the death of his partner, Lanier Benoit.
Unfortunately, the club closed the same week that Khiry was booked to perform...
Two weeks later, Khiry came to On Broadway House of Jazz, where he was greeted by Sacramento's Most elite poets.
After several prompts from poets Sean King, Angelo Williams, Marianna Sousa, and local radio host Ebro,
Khiry grabbed the mic and read his piece.......
He went on in later weeks to read 3 more times before the club was shut down....During the duration of the club, Khiry was featured in the Sacramento Observer, as he penned the popular poem in tribute to the late Betty Shabazz.......
The Date......Jan 1998...The Opening of The Blue Room
Khiry signed up for the open mic, afterwards due to the buzz created by his poetry, he was given a feature at the club...shortly after that, and again to his growing popularity,
Khiry was asked to join the Poetry group that ran the club, once called 360/365,now called The Blue Room Players, he then impressed the crowd almost weekly with freshly penned poems that tackled subjects from revolution, world issues, and of course, love........The Blue room took a hiatus in July 1998
