Pool-Dog's CRX AUTOX:the quest for the perfect run.
Autocross, otherwise known as "Solo 2", is a driver skill test where you drive your car through a challenging course made of orange pylon cones on an open parking lot. Basically it's racing, but your since you are usually the only one on the course at a specific time, you are competing against the clock, and then your times are compared to others at the event, and others with similar cars. People of all types show up to these events, from your common person to true race drivers. It's a great way to learn car control and the limits of your car in a safe environment. Competitors arrive with everything from your standard econobox to full-race cars that are trailored-in. Cars are organized into different classes based on the model of car and what has been modified from stock, to help keep competition even. Those classes have specific correction factors that then determine who did best overall of all competitors that day by taking your best time on the course and multiplying that time by a specific # based on what class your in, then using that end result # and comparing everyone at the event by that time. This is called the PAX index, and the end result # is your PAX score. This way a race car running only slightly better than an average streetcar actually scores worse since the race car should've run better due to the type of car. I run in a class called "STS" at SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) events. This is a relativley new class for the SCCA, and is mainly designed for people that are adding larger wheels/tires, intakes, exhausts, etc... to their sedan-based cars. Normally adding and intake alone moves a car from a "stock" class to a hrd-core race class, but the SCCA understands that not all of us add the parts just for overall racing purposes, so this class is a welcome addition.
