Direct Action Essay
Okay, let's be honest. No one really likes the Government. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has done their share of bitching about how the Government most recently screwed them over. Anything from the IRS and taxes, to the Police State, to the deficit, no one is satisfied with the performance we get out of this so-called Democracy we call America. The Land of Hypocrisy. The Land of the Wage Slave.
Also everyone is always saying how things need to change. I can't remember the last day when I didn't hear someone say: "Things have GOT to change in this country," and yet no one ever does anything. Where is the logic in this, I ask you. Laziness has never achieved anything worthwhile, at least on a national scope. Sure, you're sitting at home, lounging on the couch being lazy, and lo and behold you find a $20 in the cushion. Great, congratulations, but Democracy doesn't lie around under couch cushions, you actually got to get up and make a change yourself. So, some of you would probably say "Well, that's why I vote. To make my voice heard."I THINK NOT!
In the words of the great Biafra, if voting could change anything, it would be illegal. Do you think the State would actually allow a competent leftist bent on change get in office? Of course not!
Elections are already resolved before the ballot's cast. Politicians are nothing but puppet legislators to oil companies, special interest lobbies, and Big Brother Thought Police. By definition, anyone who seeks change is not a Politician, but an Activist, and there's no room for Activists in Washington. Look, if the people could have actually gotten what they want, this country would've become an agricultural syndicate nation two-hundred years ago. But of course, for that to ever happen we need to get an actual Democratic Government first.
But wait, you say, don't we already have a Democracy? Hopefully, you already know my response. I THINK NOT! America isn't a democratic nation. Instead, we're governed by an Elitist Bureaucratic Pseudo-Republic, and governed badly at that. For example, look at the Senate. The Senate is, by definition, an Anti-Democratic Institution. Not to say that the Senate is not benificial, it keeps the large states from running the table on American politics, but don't ever call it Democratic.
Our government has also morphed into an Elite Bureaucratic circle. I mean look at Congress, unless you're a rich, middle-aged, white man you are under-represented in Congress. There is an alarmingly low proportion of black, hispanic, and women senators and representatives. And how many polticians in Washington actually grew up in the ghetto or the barrio? Not very many, that's for sure. Because of the huge costs of political campaigns and the business connections needed to get the right backing, it is nearly impossible for a middle or lower-class person to successfully run for office. And even if they did, they couldn't get elected because they didn't have the connections. Politics in America is all one big Name Game: who you know and who knows you. It's all about money these days, even the Government has sold out. Most military and government projects are sub-contracted out to the highest bidder. It's no longer about freedom. It's about profit.
This is why things need to change, but it can't happen on its own. According to George Orwell, who voiced in his famed character Emmanuel Goldstein of 1984 his fears of a totalitarian state:
There are only four ways in which a ruling group can fall from power. Either it is conquered from without, or it governs so inefficiently that the masses are stirred to revolt, or it allows a strong and discontented Middle Group to come into being, or it loses its own self-confidence and willingness to govern. These cause do not act single, and as a rule all four of them are present to some degree.
Now, if you examine America through these criteria you'll find that the first and last methods will never, ever happen. America's such a vast country in both resources and geography, and with its legions of stormtroopers, that it will never be conquered from without until the country itself has fallen. Secondly, the American Government will never voluntarily step down.
As I said earlier, ruling is no longer about rules, it's about profit, and no one and no group will ever quit when there's a profit involved. As long as someone can make some money off the masses, the State will never voluntarily withdraw. This leaves us with two options for change in this country: revolt, or a strong Middle Class.
The middle class is an odd social grouping. It feels great sympathy for the poor, seeking them justice, yet the middle class itself is always striving for the upper class. It is a hypocrisy in and of itself. This is why a strong middle class would never be an effecient method of gaining change. Although the middle is sympathetic to the causes of the Movement, it would - in the event of a coup d'etat - merely attempt to switch its position with the upper Class and establish its own authority. Thus, in the case of a middle class revolt, the poor would never change its position in society. In fact, society itself would change little, as the middle and upper simply just change positions.
Therefore, we are left with Direct Action. Call it what you will - a revolt, a rebellion, The Movement, a revolution, youthful disrespect - it's still all the same when you boil down to it: taking action into our own hands to directly get things done instead of relying on the bureaucracy. I mean come on, you've said it yourself at least once or twice, it's time for things to change. So why don't we stop being lazy and do it ourselves and do it right? That's what Direct Action, instead of whining and moaning about what's wrong, get out there and right the wrong! Get out there and confront the racists, the ultra-right, the fascists, and the capitalists. By taking the fight to the streets we are sure to come out on top.
So how bout it then?
