EDDIE BOOKER, HALL OF FAME FIGHTER! September, 2004
Eddie Booker was one of the greatest fighters who ever lived. Sadly, Booker was overlooked when it came to obtaining a world title fight, which is probably why he has been overlooked for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Booker's overall record was 68-5-8, with 34 K.O.'s, campaigning from 1935-1944. He was a 5'9", 160 lb. middleweight, who fought much of his career with a bad eye, and bad hands. He was never stopped, despite fighting the best fighters of his day.
The great Archie Moore, when asked whom he considered the greatest fighter ever, said, "Charley Burley; however, there is another fighter who might have been his equal, Eddie Booker."
Moore fought Booker three times and never won, getting two draws, and getting knocked out, (the only time Archie Moore was ever knocked out cold). Charley Burley and Eddie Booker almost fought each other, but the fight never came off. Eddie said he would fight Burley if he had to, but said that he thought that Charley was about the best there ever was. Burley said that Eddie Booker would be the hardest fight he would ever have.
Booker did fight the great Holman Williams three times going 1-1-1. He also defeated Lloyd Marshall (who had beaten Ezzard Charles, who was probably the greatest light heavyweight who ever lived).
Eddie Booker was not only one of the most talented fighters to ever live, but he was also one of the finest gentlemen. A testament to this is the fact that following a fight in which he donated blood to Archie Moore, they became lifelong friends and Moore became the godfather of one of Booker's sons. Booker has never been given his proper credit, although he died at the age of 57 in 1975, his enshrinement in the International Boxing Hall of Fame was long overdue. He was finally inducted in 2017.
