He turned pro in 1994, at 20 years of age, and had a successful debut with a decision over Larry Bradley. He has compiled an excellent record of 16-4-2, mostly as a lightweight. However, he realizes his futute lies in the featherweight division and successfully dropped down in weight to win the NBA world featherweight title on January 31, 1998, in Nassau, Bahamas, with a 12 round unanimous decision over Quincy Pratt. He feels comfortable at this weight. On November 17, 1998, Bernard captured his second world title with a seventh round TKO over Elias Juarez, to win the IBC title. He dropped down further in weight to 122 lbs. for this fight.
