Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my song or performance copyrighted?

Yes. For a summary of copyright procedures and laws in the United States, click on the copyright link below. Hint: most songwriters just send in a cassette tape of their songs along with a PA form to the Library of Congress to have it registered for about $10 or $20. For songs other than in English, we request that the lyrics be accompanied by an English translation. The winners must sign an affidavit confirming that their song is original and that they hold the rights to the song before we can include them in our compilation CD.

Am I legally contracted in any way to SongRider Studios?

No. The only committment is to the songwriting contest, nothing else. Any further followup would need your permission, as in our Winner's Affidavit and Agreement. However, your entry does constitute permission to use your name, likeness and voice for future publicity and advertising purposes without additional compensation.

Can I enter more than one song or performance?

Yes, as long as an entry fee is sent in with each song. All materials submitted are not refundable and SongRider Studios is not responsible for all lost, damaged, misdirected, postage due, stolen or misappropriated entries.

What are the possibilities of attracting a recording contract with an established company?

With over a million songs available on the internet, the challenge is to attract attention to your songs. We do this by:

1. Attracting and selecting the very best songs and songwriters

2. listing the winners

3. by always having a presence on the internet through our ongoing contests

4. by rewarding agent's searches by always presenting them with our best songwriters

5. by linking to the winner's websites for followup sales and agent access

6. by creating a compilation CD of the best songs from each contest which can be purchased on the internet through MP3.com.

7. by being listed in the Muse's Muse Songwriting Contests, the premier website which lists the main songwriting contests on the internet.

8. by publishing the compilation CD which qualifies entrants to become members of ASCAP or other songwriting guilds.

Your chances of attracting a recording contract are, thereby, enhanced by the structure of our contest. When you do get a recording contract, please notify us so that we can share that with our contest members and provide them with encouragement to keep writing.

What about taxes?

Taxes are the responsibility of the winners. The cash prizes will be issued jointly to the authors. It will be their responsibility to divide it up among each other.

Why charge an entry fee and a compilation fee?

The $10 entry fee pays for the cash prizes. The $30 compilation CD fee pays for its production costs.
