What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic or family violence is the use of abusive and violent
behavior between people who are married, living together or
have an ongoing or prior intimate relationship.
Abuse comes in two basic forms...mental and physical. When it
becomes physical, it becomes obviously criminal as it becomes
easily evidenced assault. Unfortunately, the mental abuse is not
so easily evidenced, however, the victim of mental abuse certainly feels
it every bit as deeply. In some cases, even more so.
What is abusive behavior? To take it to the very basics,
anytime one expends any energy toward another in a manner that
the other reasonably finds objectionable, is abusive behavior.
Let's take a look at Texas' definition of assault:
" A person commits an offense of assault if the person:
(1) intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes bodily injury to another,
including the person's spouse;
(2) intentionally or knowingly threatens another with imminent
bodily injury, including the person's spouse;
(3) intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with
another when the person knows or should reasonably believe
that the other will regard the contact as offensive or provocative."
Assault progresses to an aggravated form (more serious);
"if the person causes serious bodily injury to another, including the person's
spouse, or uses or exhibits a deadly weapon during the commission of the assault."
Or, if it is committed against "a public servant acting under color of the servant's office or employment"
A Few Facts Concerning Domestic Violence
Thirty percent or more of the women murdered in this country
are killed by their husbands, ex-husbands or boyfriends.
Attacks by husbands on wives result in more injuries requiring medical
treatment than rape, auto accidents and muggings combined.
U.S. businesses lose three to five billion dollars each
year due to abuse-related absenteeism.
Our communities spend millions of dollars each year on domestic violence, including law enforcement, court proceedings, health
care and social services.
And then of course, there are the millions of combined hours donated
by concerned volunteers.
Domestic violence is a crime against society as a whole.
What do children grow to respect when they are constant witness
to spousal abuse? Or, to their own abuse? When fear, instability and
confussion have replaced love, comfort and nurturing, how can this
perpetuate a healthy environment?
The misery of the abusive environment is a basic crime against humanity.
In this respect, it becomes the responsibility of each and every individual living
in this world.
Our most useful tool to work on the domestic violence problem is,
Awareness!
The tendency has been to view domestic violence as a sacred part of the family. To
not become otherwise "involved". "Not my problem."
Let me tell you something, without requested or applied intervention,
IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER.
Domestic violence is basically a behavioral problem and the plain fact is
that no one likes to admit to having a behavioral problem.
There is a sign in my office, "There is NO excuse for domestic violence."
With the help available today, there is no excuse for not looking
for assistance.
It CAN be done.
Hey, it's a Heart thing.
Listed below are resources which I have researched and found to
be credible and sincere. If by some chance you contact any of them
and find that this is not so, then please let me know.
Also, I am always just an email away. If you would like to talk to
someone about a problem, then send me an email.
I have devoted tens of thousands of hours working with victims of abuse
and abusers. There is no aspect of abuse which I have not seen. Each
situation is completely unique unto itself. All abuse matters are completely
personal to the abused and the abusers.

To my knowledge, there is no publication or association offering a more candid and
realistic view of sexual abuse and it's impact on our social structure. Nowhere
have I seen more corroboration of the reaches of retail sexual abuse.
This is especially necessary knowledge for anyone involved in protection of the
sexually abused or in any way having sexual abuse as a factor.
There is nothing as damaging to the Heart and Spirit of a human being as sexual
abuse.
