According to the National Safety Council, the fatal firearm
accident rate fell to an all time low in 1995 (latest year's statistics
available), down 85% since the all time high recorded in 1904.
***
According to National Center for Health statistics, among fatal accidents involving children
are: Motor Vehicle Accidents (44%), Fires (16%), Drowning (14%), Choking on
Ingested Objects (4.5%), Firearms Related (2%).
Only a fraction of 1% of all death in this country (and most of the world) is firearm related. Yet we are
economically, socially and politically entrenched in a
"war on guns".
***
To emphasize this point, let us take an objective look at the most expensive, time-consuming, social impacting, politically used
and constitutionally irregular legislation of the last few years.
The epitomical example of this is the Lautenberg Act which makes it a federal felony for anyone
who has ever been convicted of any domestic violence
misdemeanor to own, possess, transfer
or transport firearms or ammunition.
***
We use statistics to help us form a more objective and therefore more effective view
of our problems.
Statistically speaking (44%-2%), would it not be much more responsibly prudent of us for the safety
and well-being of our children, to make it a federal felony for anyone who has ever
been convicted of domestic violence to own, possess or operate a motor vehicle? Or matches? Or water? Or small objects?
***
In almost three decades of working with victims of domestic
violence and abuse, I have seen every form of physical and emotional destruction imaginable. And some you could not possibly imagine
unless you were seeking pleasure from the torture and destruction of
other human beings.
In all of this, firearms have been the least of our problems. The fact is, the most common thing we hear is, "It's all right until he starts drinking."
I have heard this from children who have been brutally sodomized to women who could barely see or speak because of the beating they have endured.
***
So why firearms? Why have we made such an all important issue of
firearm ownership?
The most strongly used argument for this is
the safety and well-being of our children. We should be most concerned
with the safety and well-being of our children. For it is our most sacred role in Life as human beings to protect and teach our children.
It is our individual responsibility to perpetuate a legacy our children
can respect. Lies, deceptions, ignorance and foolishness do not
perpetuate that respect.
***
If we are sincerely concerned with the safety of our children,
then shouldn't our efforts be focused on the areas which are most
destructive? Even though these areas may involve responsibility
on everyone's part and not just laying that responsibility on a convenient
icon or group of individuals?
***
The most overall destructive area in our societies is the neglect
and abuse of our children. Focus on this one thing and all
other things will fall in their place.
***
The most intolerable point of the fireams issue is the misuse
of the vast resources employed. Time, energies and finances which
could be used so much more responsibly and effectively.
***
If one is sincere about firearm safety and children, the
National Rifle Association's Eddie Eagle program is the most
substantial grassroots child/firearm safety program available.
Since it's inception in 1988, it has reached over ten million children and it has been taught by more than 500 law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.
It is not concerned with ownership
or usage. It is a child/firearm safety program based simply on respect and discipline....Basic foundations for positive human achievement.
