TOPIC: Autumn Scents
It is well known that smells, more than any other stimuli, can wake memories and set a mood. It is also known that cetain smells can create pleasant feelings. And what is more--tests have proven that those certain smells create the same pleasant feelings in everyone who is tested. With that in mind, take advantage of scenting your home to create a mood during your entertaining.
To capture the total feeling of your fall theme, consider the following:
Keep a small pan filled with water on the back burner of your stove. Add cinnamon, cloves and lemon juice and on the lowest setting, gently simmer.
Burn applewood in your fireplace.
Keep a large basket near the fireplace filled with colored fall leaves. Occassionally, drop a handful of leaves unto the fire.
Bake desserts with apples or pumpkin or squash using plenty of spices.
Seve mulled cider with cinnamon sticks.
Tie cinnamon sticks or spice bags on the inside of lamp shades (keep away from the light bulbs).
Puchase a bale of hay from a farm or a feed supply store (Be sure it's this year's hay). Cut the bale open and loosely fill baskets, wooden crates and apple boxes. Arrange apples, squash, pumpkins and gourds in the hay. Not only visually pleasant, but will subtly scent the area.
