General R&B Women in Music sites

  • Divastation
New site promises to be a comprehensive source on "divas" far and wide, ranging from jazz artists like Billie Holiday to Spanish-language greats like Celia Cruz to even female DJs like Spinderella. Of course, you'll find info on today's R&B starlettes (i.e. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, etc.) Most of the bios are forthcoming, but the webmaster's diva lists are massive and worth a look.

    Great Old School Music Sites

  • Disco-nnected
Visit here if you're looking for bios (and even a few lyrics) for a wide array of disco and disco-funk artists. Artists include Sheila B. & Devotion, Karen Young, Roberta Kelly, Musique, Fat Larry's Band, and tons more. Note: While the bios are very helpful in learning more about the artists, not all of them are accurate. For instance, the Brazilian webmaster admits that he knows of no big hits that Betty Wright may have had, and feels that no one may have heard of jazz masters The Crusaders. Still a great page.

  • Disco Inferno
"Keep the fire burning" with this excellent and huge tribute to classic disco. There are enough audio clips here to make your head spin. Plus disco trivia and info on producers, DJs, clubs, artists, and labels.

  • Discomusic.Com
Hear and remember the rarest and greatest disco club classics of the 70s and beyond. Absolutely stunning page by Bernie Lopez.

  • Miss Funkyflyy's Web Pages
If you've never seen Swedish music journalist Maria Granditsky's funk/soul/r&b pages yet, then run, don't walk, over there. Check out the most complete resources on the web for artists like the Bar-Kays, Commodores, Barbara Mason, Ann Peebles, Mavis Staples and more. Whether it's classic soul icons or today's hottest stars (like Maxwell and Yvette Michelle, for instance), Maria interviews 'em all. You'll love this well-designed site.

  • Soul Train - Don Cornelius Productions, Inc.
Back in the day you could see all the bold soul sisters (and brothers too) on Soul Train, which used to be the "hippest trip in America." This official site will help you relive all those groovy musical memories from one of the greatest music TV shows of all time. Make sure to visit the Archival Library for all the old school goods (including full episode lists and video clips) from 1971 until.

Non Soul/R&B Women in Music Sites

  • Lea Gilmore's "It's a Girl Thang!"
ACLU Deputy Director Lea Gilmore loves the blues and it shows! Whether it's modern blues women, women who work in the blues music industry, or traditional blues artists like Big Maybelle, Alberta Hunter, or Dinah Washington, you'll find 'em on her page. Great!!

  • Women in Music Project
Unique site by John Harp features current and past female bands in rock who you'll be hard-pressed to find info about elsewhere on the web. Lots of wonderfully collected writings and photos on artists including Isis, Fanny, Bikini Kill and more.

  • Women of 1970s Punk
A great resource by Webmistress Rockin' Rina. She breaks it all down with info on the women of UK, US, European, even Canadian 1970s-early 80s punk rock, post-punk, ska, new wave, and alternative music. Includes band bios, discographies, pics, audio, and recipes to boot!

  • Women of Ska
Another super cool site featuring info on the original Jamaican Rocksteady stars from the 60s and 70s to the US and UK queens of 2-Tone and Third Wave. From Phyllis Dillon to Pauline Black and the Selecter, you'll find over 181 entries dedicated to the Ska ladies here.

    Other Music-Related Sites

  • All Music Guide
All Music Guide is a gigantic online repository of musician bios and discographies for all genres. The AMG was a great resource in helping me develop several of the mini-bios for this page.

  • Encyclopedia Breakannica
For all the hip hop people out there, this site is one of the best-kept secrets on the web. Why? Because it is a "comprehensive compilation of samples and their sources, organized by genre" so that you know songs which rappers use to "enhance" their works. For instance, if you want to know which Minnie Riperton song A Tribe Called Quest sampled, just go here.

  • Char Star Lyrics Scene
The most amazing lyrics site I've ever come across. This page specializes in rhythm & blues, soul, funk, and disco lyrics, though you'll find all sorts categorized neatly by performer name and song. If you can't find the lyrics you need here, this site even has a handy page of links to other lyrics sites.
