"On a world supported by four elephants on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There's an avaricious but inept wizard, a naive tourist whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course THE EDGE of the planet..."
The Colour of Magic was the first Discworld novel released way back when in 1983. It's about Rincewind, everyones favourite "wizzard" and Twoflower, the disc's first tourist who employs Rincewind to take him on a tour of Ankh Morpork. To be honest, it probably isn't as good as the later Discworld novels, at least in some respects. But while the plot may not hold together too well, I think that TCOM has a certain charm, or atmosphere, not present in any of the other discworld books. And of course Rincewind, with his world weary cynicism and Twoflower, with his innocence undeterred optimism make a perfect comic team. If you are about to start reading Discworld books you should know that some people recommend that you don't choose this as your first book in case it puts you off, but I started with it and it got me hooked . So while a book like Mort is probably a safer option I would probably go with The Colour of Magic. I guess it's up to you.
