The Associated Press is reporting that soprano and arts administrator Beverly Sills is critically ill in a New York City hospital.The opera diva who won over fans worldwide with her sparkling voice and charming personality and became a powerhouse in the New York arts world, is gravely ill with cancer. The Metropolitan Opera would neither confirm nor deny news of her illness, but people close to her said Sills, 78, was at a Manhattan hospital, with her daughter at her side. Friends and fans around the world are praying for the opera legend and New York megastar. Sills, nicknamed Bubbles for her effervescent personality, is ill from lung cancer. Today, if it can be done, she’ll be transferred from a hospital to her home to live out her final days. She turned 78 on May 25.
