First Volume of Pittsburgh Symphony's New Brahms Cycle Released Early

The Pittsburgh Symphony, which earlier this year announced its return to commercial recording on the PentaTone label with an upcoming Brahms Symphony cycle, is seeing its efforts go on sale ahead of schedule. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that PentaTone has decided to release the first volume in the set on August 28 rather than wait until the complete cycle is recorded during the coming season.

Star tenor Luciano Pavarotti, suffering from cancer, has been hospitalised for tests, a media spokesman at the Modena University Policlinico in northern Italy says. The 71-year-old, who underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer a year ago and has since had at least five rounds of chemotherapy, was admitted on Tuesday, Gabriele Sorrentino said. Glamorous young Dutch violinist Janine Jansen has withdrawn from the Serge and Olga Koussevitzky Memorial Concert this Sunday (August 5) with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Music Center in western Massachusetts. A statement released by the BSO Friday afternoon said that she is unable to perform due to illness. Replacing Jansen will be another talented young violinist: Stefan Jackiw
