A plaque is to be unveiled in Berlin on Wednesday (23 APR 2008) in commemoration of Jean Sibelius, the famous Finnish composer, who lived in the city for some time. Sibelius lived in a house at Marienstrasse 4, on which the plaque is to be fastened, while studying in Berlin in 1889-1890. The rich musical life and colourful society of Berlin were an important source of inspiration to Sibelius, who wrote to his friend that he was "like a fish in water" in the German capital. Pronouncing the titles of classical music and the names of composers and performers is a daunting task for many Americans because so many of the words are foreign to us. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that some of the names that look familiar are not pronounced as we would pronounce them. This dictionary provides some help in the form of pronunciations by a phonetic system devised by E. Douglas Brown of the staff of WOI Radio at Iowa State University. Many of the pronunciations in the dictionary were derived from tape-recorded pronunciations made by foreign nationals who were were speaking their respective native languages. 
The Chief Conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre, Aleksandr Vedernikov, has been pronounced the Best Conductor of the Year by BBC Music Magazine. The decision to confer the awards of the popular British edition is taken by open voting amongst the readers and the jury, which consists of BBC Music Magazine editors, music critics, and writers. This year, nearly 90,000 people took part in the voting. Maestro Vedernikov was praised in the “Symphony Music” category for his interpretations of the Russian 20th century classical composer Dmitri Shostakovich. According to Daniel Jaffe, who sat on the jury, the musical critics were impressed by Vedernikov’s rendition, which so much reflected Shostakovich’s humour and his expressiveness.

He was also violinist and pedagogue. known for his performances of contemporary music and for his interpretations of music by Czech composers. His recordings with Czech Philharmonic acquired many international awards (several times Golden Harmony Award, Grand Prix du disque, etc.) and digitalized titled, Karel Aneerl Gold Edition was awarded by Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles Cros.
