Pianist Horacio Gutierrez has an extra reason to be glad he's performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra this weekend. He loves the music he'll be playing, enjoys working with guest conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier and has a long history with the orchestra. But he has battled cancer over the past year and feels transformed by the experience. MORE | WEB LINKS | SHOP Horacio Gutierrez

Pulitzer Prize composer, Henry Brant dies
Topic: MILESTONES 2008
Henry Brant, best known as a pioneer in the use of spatial effects, died Saturday [26 APR 2008] at his home in Santa Barbara. He was 94. Among the hundreds of works Mr. Brant composed over a long career was "Ice Field," a work for organ and orchestra commissioned by the Other Minds Festival for the San Francisco Symphony. Michael Tilson Thomas led the world premiere in Davies Symphony Hall in December 2001, and the piece was awarded the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Sir Simon Rattle has been re-elected as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, despite fears that he would be ousted by a hardcore of naysayers. The vote from the Philharmonic's players gives him a further decade at the helm of the orchestra, with effect from this autumn. MORE

Rumors of conflict arose after Rattle, 53, announced the philharmonic's program for the 2008 season, the Daily Telegraph reported Thursday. EARLIER STORY

A plaque is to be unveiled in Berlin on Wednesday (23 APR 2008) in commemoration of Jean Sibelius, the famous Finnish composer, who lived in the city for some time. Sibelius lived in a house at Marienstrasse 4, on which the plaque is to be fastened, while studying in Berlin in 1889-1890. The rich musical life and colourful society of Berlin were an important source of inspiration to Sibelius, who wrote to his friend that he was "like a fish in water" in the German capital.

This is a very sad news I have to give. Great italian baritone Enzo Sordello passed away this 17th of April 2008, at the age of 80.
In the coming weeks, I will totally rebuild his website with new materials, audio, video, and above all some of the many videotaped courses I recorded. (www.enzosordello.com)
Maestro Sordello was such a personnality, it was almost impossible not to like him. Two month ago, he was still singing high bflat while teaching. I will miss him very much. - Addio Maestro.

Enrico Caruso (born Errico Caruso; February 25, 1873 – August 2, 1921) was an Italian opera singer and one of the greatest tenors in history. Caruso was also the most popular singer in any genre in the first two decades of the 20th Century and one of the most important pioneers of recorded music. Caruso's popular recordings and his extraordinary voice, known for its mature power, beauty and unequalled richness of tone, made him perhaps the best-known operatic star of his era. Such was his influence on singing style, virtually all subsequent Italianate tenors (and many non-Italian tenors) have been his heirs to a greater or lesser extent. He remains famous, though he predated the publicity that would aid later stars of opera.
