1908... Birth of Czech conductor Karel ANCERL in Tucapy. d-Toronto, 3 JUL 1973. He was also violinist and pedagogue. known for his performances of contemporary music and for his interpretations of music by Czech composers. His recordings with Czech Philharmonic acquired many international awards (several times Golden Harmony Award, Grand Prix du disque, etc.) and digitalized titled, Karel Aneerl Gold Edition was awarded by Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles Cros.

8 APRIL 1708 First Performance of G. F. Handel´s oratorio La Resurrezione "The Resurrection", with Arcangelo Corelli conducting at the Bonelli Palace in Rome. La Resurrezione (HWV 47) is a sacred oratorio by George Frideric Handel, set to a libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece (1652-1728). Capece was court poet to Queen Maria Casimira of Poland, who was living in exile in Rome. It was first performed on the Easter Sunday of 1708 at Rome, with the backing of the Marchese Francesco Ruspoli, Handel's patron at this time.

March 27, 1808 Franz Joseph Haydn gives his last public appearance at a performance of his oratorio The Creation to mark the composer's upcomming 76th birthday. Beethoven and Salieri also attend the performance and meet Haydn, in Vienna.

1808 Birth of English harpist and composer Elias PARISH-ALVARS. d-Vienna, 25 JAN 1849. Eli Parish (February 28, 1808, Teignmouth, Devonshire, England - January 25, 1849, Vienna) was an English harpist and composer. He changed his name to Elias Parish Alvars, and sometimes used the pseudonym Albert Alvars in his publications.

1908 First Performance of Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony, composer conducting, in St. Petersburg.


Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27, was written by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff in 1906–07. The premiere was conducted by the composer himself in St. Petersburg on 8 February 1908. Its duration is approximately 60 minutes when performed uncut; cut performances can be as short as 35 minutes.
