A critical incident is a traumatic event, in an institution or in the community, that is outside the range of usual human experience and that may cause unusual psychological distress and has sufficient emotional power to affect a person's ability to cope with the consequences of the event. The objectives of the program are as follows: a. to lessen the impact of distressing critical incidents on those affected by them; b. to help the recovery from harmful stress reactions which may damage the health and performance of personnel and their families or offenders and their families; and c. to educate staff on prevention and on the effects of post traumatic stress disorders.
