Summer Course DISASTER SERVICES

(CNSL 5870-07) 1 Credit - University of Wyoming (Graduate) Counselor Education Department Dates: Friday, July 27, 2001 5 PM - 10 PM Saturday, July 28, 2001 8 AM - 6 PM Instructor: George W. Doherty

This course will introduce you to disasters, the community response, and the role of Red Cross Disaster Services as well as disaster mental health services. It will provide a brief overview of Disaster Mental Health Services, Mass Care, Health Services, and their roles in responding to the needs of both victims and disaster workers. The role of debriefings and defusings will be presented and discussed both for disasters and for critical incidents. The content of this course will include general theory and models of Disaster Mental Health, crisis intervention techniques commonly used in disaster situations, supportive research, and practice of approaches used in responding to the victims, workers and communities affected.
