Part 42

Alex’s alarm went off at 7:00 and she groaned. She hit the snooze button and rolled over. She then wondered why she had the alarm set in the first place, and then she remembered she was meeting the coach. She crawled out of bed and got dressed, she grabbed her stuff and slipped out the front door trying not to disturb the house. Alex drove down to the school and smiled when she saw the coach leaning against his truck waiting for her.

“Morning Coach.”

“Morning Alex, ready to get started?”

“Yeah, I think so. Did you call the doc?”

“Yeah, and he said if we are careful there shouldn’t be a problem.”

“Great.”

“You been working with the weights like I told you?” The coach asked

“Yes, for about 2 weeks.”

“How much?”

“I’ve gotten up past 150.”

“Good, let’s see what you have left.”

Alex and the coach worked for almost an hour and a half and Alex worked her arm hard. She was still not satisfied because she hadn’t gained her normal speed back, but the coach was very much impressed. He agreed to meet her again in the morning.

As she was leaving she asked, “Do you think I can get it back coach? I mean, will I be able to play for the University team?”

The coach looked at her for a minute, “Alex, I have known you for years, and when you want something, you usually get it.”

Alex grinned at him; “you think so?”

“I know so.”

With that Alex got into her car and headed back home. She drove up to find Nick waiting for her in the driveway. “Where have you been?” He asked

Alex’s brain was working to come up with an answer, “out driving around.”

“At 6:30 in the morning?”

“It’s 8:30 Nick.”

“Yes but you have been gone for almost an hour and a half, and why are you all sweaty.”

“I went to the park to run, I needed to think about some stuff.” She hated lying to Nick more than anything, but she knew she could not tell him the truth.

He looked at her for a minute and Alex hoped he didn’t know she was lying, “Well, I just came by to tell you that I have to go home, but I’ll be back next week.”

“Oh.” was all Alex could say.

“Do you want to go do something today? My plane doesn’t leave until 5:00 tonight.”

“You’re flying? You hate flying.”

Nick shrugged and didn’t answer.

“If you will give me a minute to change, I’ll be right out.”

Nick nodded and leaned against the truck, “I’ll wait.”

Alex ran inside to get changed and ran into Jason, “How did it go?”

“Fine.”

“Did you tell Nick?”

“NO!”

“Are you going to?”

“No Jas, he wouldn’t understand, maybe later.”

“Okay, well, I covered for you.”

She grinned, “Thank you and I love you for it.” With that she ran into her room to change. In 10 minutes she walked out of the house, Nick was sitting in his truck with the radio on, but got out when he saw Alex emerge from the house. He went around and opened the door for her; after she was in and the door was closed nick turned to walk around the truck and noticed Alex’s gear in the back of the explorer. He really didn’t think that much about it and climbed in. He grinned at her, “You know what?”

“What?” Alex asked

“I love you.”

Alex smiled, “and I love you back.” She looked out the window and tried to figure out how she would ever be able to tell Nick about what she was planning to do--play baseball.
