New Video 06-23-06 Here's a video of the garage band I was jamming with over the summer. Subject to Change 06-23-06 Pictures Shows Sounds Club Website Facts 11-25-05 "Thelonious" is the pseudonym for "Dexter Neeld." About five years ago, I began a laborious struggle to develop a concept album. Last month I finished writing the score for the album. I have posted a bulk of the album lyrics on this site (as well as the tracklisting). They appear ginuwine in some portions and grotesque in others, but my objective is that they are honest. At the bottom of the page, there are demos of "Three Nights a Week" and "Toy Bell." Both of these songs coincide with cadences in songs for the "Thelonious" concept album. Next month, along with Subject to Change, I will record demos for portions of "Live Once Young Once," "Here's an Ailment," and "Midlife Crisis." I posted "Naked" at the bottom on mp3 (the song the drummer wrote). There will be no recorded guitars on the final album. Only full-orchestra instruments comprise Side 1 (Songs 1-6) "Dreams." Side 2 (Songs 7-12), "Realities," is mostly arranged for synthesizers and tape loops. I will be the first to admit that making this album may mean losing my mind, but forget about that? Please? Biography 1. Being Born The first song on the "Dreams" side of the vinyl I plan to record is "Being Born." I want people to hear it and say "That's probably what being born sounds like." It seems imperative that we should all remember this happening but we don't. People don't. Animals don't either. This track is thoroughly influenced by Pink Floyd's "Speak to Me." 2. Down by the Stream "Down by the Stream" contains passages from Lawrence Welk's "You Belong to Me." It is also influenced by The Beatles' "I Am Only Sleeping," and Pink Floyd's "San Tropez." 3. Seasons "Seasons" is influenced by Agathe Christie's "Three Blind Mice," Beck's "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes," and orchestrates a portion of Modern Silence's "Three Nights a Week. 4. Eyes, Nose, and Lips The intended song for this piece was called "Dayna." It was written for Dayna Bieleta despite the relationship I had with her sister, Danielle, in like eighth grade. I decided to scrap the lyrics I had written. The song was motivated by Simon and Garfunkel's "Baby Driver," and Big Pimpin' Delemond's "Big Pimpin'." "If you find it in your heart to forgive me, you will open up your gates for eternity." When I was at around ninth grade, I was a devout Nine Inch Nails fan. In the name of Trent Reznor, particularly, I am aware that I made some comments about religion that I will eternally regret. I think they involved Atheism and Satanism. Though they were obviously for sarcasm's sake, the underlined lyric is my written apology to God. 5. Son of Sam Son of Sam was written in Atlanta, Georgia. I had a certain melody that I had hummed for years. Originally, it came from a Pearl-Jam-type song that I had heard on 100.5 The Fox in 2000. The harmony is indirectly inspired by Iron Butterfly's "Flowers and Beads" and Travis's "Luv." Modern Silence played this song live at several shows, and I would like to post the mp3 of it I can convince Derek Jordan to buy a new battery for his camera. "Son of Sam," track 5 on the "Dreams" side of the album, pays homage to one of the most deranged serial killers of all-time: David Berkowitz. The song is musically influenced by Radiohead's "My Iron Lung," and Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven." There are unused passages from the original "Three Nights a Week" outro that will occur in this piece. I must also send props to my friend Ben Browning for explaining "in your heart, there is a built-in synthesizer." You will notice that there are some lyrics that pertain to this comment. 6. Live Once Young Once This song was written on bass for Derrick Arnold in the days of Modern Silence. Derek Jordan felt the song "lacked energy," but that was basically my intention. After all, if I wanted to hear a guitar I would turn the radio to basically any station. "Live Once Young Once" is influenced partly by The Barenaked Ladies' "Pinch Me," Nirvana's "Dumb (Unplugged)," The Velvet Underground's "Venus in Furs," and The Beatles' "Martha My Dear." Portions of the bridge were inspired by Hans Zimmer's "Better Man." The intimate lyrics involving marriage, honestly, were written with my ex-girlfriend Brittany S. in mind. I stayed up until about 8:30 AM creating the arduous progression. 7. Cowboy Hat "Cowboy Hat" is tentatively referred to as "In My Childhood" (homage to Brian Wilson) for standing as the opening song for the album's side "Realities." I was thinking "I want the guitar solo to sound as though I am wearing a cowboy hat." The song is influenced by Utada Hikaru's "Loving You," the Legend of Zelda's "Hyrule Castle Courtyard Theme," and Radiohead's "Lucky." The tag was written for a girl I had met in art class named Mary Anne. Although I was interested in her, she informed me that she was involved in a profound relationship with a member from the NAVY, so I never dated her. Before her boyfriend explanation occured in class, I had already foolishly written the song and played it for her. I stole the C6add9 chord from another guy in my IUS guitar class. Other influences are Pedro the Lion's "I Promise" and R.E.M.'s "Man on the Moon." 8. SEX (Lovers Undercovers) "SEX" was originally written as the answer to Derek Jordan's statements about "Live Once Young Once." Because Derek insisted I write a heavy song, I tried. The porno-stlye lick that occurs one time was inspired by a rap song in 2001 that I heard on the radio while I was jamming with Brad Mayfield for New Albany's The Battle of the Bands. Some of the comments about kissing were written for my friends Adrienne and Ruth, whom I had met at a house-sitting party. They thought it would be a friendly way to meet if we had a three-way (pop) kiss. They were drunk, of course. The music is influenced by Rage Against the Machine's "Ghost of Tom Joad" and Foo Fighters' "Hey Jonny Park." 9. Midlife Crisis "Midlife Crisis" is situated directly in the middle of the album's "Realities" side. The opening was written in Mrs. Frank's piano-instructing class at IUS. The lyrics are written in favor of "Being Born." "I hadn't been slapped like that since then." When I was young I was assigned medication for anxieties that involved the fear of elevators, tornadoes, and airplanes. I figure that at one point I hadn't taken the medicine (sedatives of some sort, assumably), and had thoroughly urked my mother while she was on the telephone by "acting out." She slapped me in the face. This memory bruised my pride. It remained in my cerebral cortex. The song was also written about Katy Hurt. She dyed her all-black, at all times. She had large wings engraved in her back with a needle. The "Death to the Blues" cadence was written for representation of my contempt toward blues music in the twentieth century. In Madison, Indiana, I witnessed a blues band play on a dock at around 1993. It was then that I realized how mundane and redundant the blues could be. "Midlife Crisis" is influenced by Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary." Portions of it were typed while I was in San Francisco, California. 10. Softly "Softly" hits me close to home. It was written about the automobile fatality of my close friend Steven A. Singleton. Portions of it were written while I was in San Francisco, California, at about 4 AM. 11. Here's an Ailment "Here's an Ailment" was written on the piano in about ten minutes. My mother, a nurse, is constantly diagnosing family members with various ailments. Maybe it's just a perspective, but maybe it's an excuse for her to remain on Paxil. It seems that the new consensus for medically-trained professionals is that a person is not "to be." There must be some precise syndrome that justifies each person's actions, or that debris from various symptoms in a conglomerate of ailments justifies someone's medical intake. This song was written in defense of my brother Michael Neeld, whom was declared clinically insane in his early twenties. It is influenced by Ben Folds Five's "Missing the War." 12. Day of Retire The premisce to the album-closer "Day of Retire" is a double-ended sword. It represents the spectrum of my father's life in modern day, and the alleged life-spectrum of my own in the future. The concept was partly inspired by Brian Wilson's "Child is Father of the Man." The music is influenced by Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter." The text is inspired by The Butthole Surfers' "Pepper." This whole album is widely influenced by The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," and Outkast's " The Love Below." Lyrics 1. Being Born [Sound Effects Interlude] 2. 11-25-05 "Thelonious" is the pseudonym for "Dexter Neeld." About five years ago, I began a laborious struggle to develop a concept album. Please?
1. The concept was partly inspired by Brian Wilson's "Child is Father of the Man." The music is influenced by Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter." The text is inspired by The Butthole Surfers' "Pepper." This whole album is widely influenced by The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," and Outkast's " The Love Below."
