Don't Judge Me

Don’t judge me when you haven’t seen
The reality behind closed doors
You seem to think that perfection reigned
And made the man supreme
You saw him laugh, you saw him smile,
Saw him play the game
But when the door was firmly shut
You missed the other side.
The nightly performance of marital rape
The violent threats that prevailed
Sexual perversions were his whim
Forced from me – not given.
Made to feel like a cheapened whore
I looked elsewhere for love
Adultery or unfaithfulness – call it what you will
Those things I’ll admit without pride
But if you had lived my life
Maybe you’d have done the same.
I will not deface your thoughts of him,
His death upsets you enough
You will love him as you will
Your son, brother or dad.
But until you have walked in my shoes
Please, all I ask is
Don’t judge me.

When you've finished....
