Listen to some selected tracks...

NEW AND NOTABLE
***************
"I Hope You Dance"
Lee Ann Womack
...check your price.
Womack's third album finds the Texas-born singer maturing into one of Nashville's most prized performers, even within the confines of Music City's artistic shackles. The grandiose lead single and title track featuring labelmates the Sons of the Desert is already making considerable noise. Across the album Womack utilizes a range of talents, including writers Buddy and Julie Miller (who also add harmonies), Bruce Robison, and Rodney Crowell and singer Ricky Skaggs. She concludes matters with a remake of Don Williams's No. 1 hit "Lord I Hope This Day Is Good."

"The Judds Reunion: Live"
The Judds

Did you think that Naomi and Wynonna would get together for their first Judds performance in eight years and leave the tape recorders at home? In front of a delighted Phoenix crowd on New Year's Eve 1999, mother and daughter show just how big an effect they had on the direction of country music, blending honky-tonk, soul, pop, and rock across an assortment of Judds hits and Wynonna solo material.

"Prisoner of Love"
Ray Price
...check your price.
Fifty years after Ray Price emerged as one of the most promising honky-tonkers in Nashville, he returns with this classy countrypolitan coda. Price left his hard-country roots behind decades ago, pretty much sticking to his sophisticated crooning style for most of the past 30 years. Still, with his voice rich with flavor, his phrasing as personal as ever, and a collection of tasteful arrangements courtesy of David Campbell (alt-rock star Beck's father, incidentally), Price once again shows how comfortably country can mingle with the uptown crowd.

"Heartbreak Town"
Ronnie McCoury

The mandolin master steps outside of papa Del's shadow for his first solo record and proves that his ample talents exceed those of a mere sideman. With a cutting, soulful voice eerily similar to his father's and a deft songwriting touch, McCoury is much more than a picking machine, although his amazing mandolin work is still his meal ticket. With a guest list boasting the likes of David Grisman, Bela Fleck, David Grier, Jerry Douglas, and all of his day-job cohorts, McCoury's solo debut covers a lot of ground while never leaving his bluegrass roots behind.

"Rebecca Lynn Howard"
Rebecca Lynn Howard

File this gal in the "Ones to Watch" file. This 20-year-old Kentuckian is bold and brassy, and her debut offers a number of standout tracks, though she can't avoid all of the trappings of modern-day Nashville. She cowrote 10 of the 12 tracks, and she sounds comfortable with both hardcore country and more pop-oriented concerns. While there are missteps, Howard simply oozes potential and confidence, which could make for a deadly combination down the road.

TRAVIS PICKIN'
**************
Growing up in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, Merle Travis learned a unique style of fingerpicking guitar indigenous to the area that allowed the player to accompany his own melody lines with a bass bottom courtesy of the thumb. Travis brought this style to the world and revolutionized country guitar in the process, influencing folks like Chet Atkins along the way. Here are two recent reissues that feature this "Travis pickin'" style:
"The Best of Merle Travis: Sweet Temptation (1946-1953)"

This 20-song set serves as a terrific introduction to one of the biggest country stars of the 1940s, a terrific songwriter as well as top-flight picker.

Chet Atkins

A wonderfully chosen double-CD collection, this puts the emphasis squarely on Atkins's six-string genius.

This 25-song solo-acoustic affair was supposed to be only for his fan- club members, but it's simply too good to hide from the public.
