(This interview was done before the girls went to Australia in 1998 and it may be a bit old.)

B*Witched have been called Ireland’s answer to the Spice Girls. Their first single C’est La Vie has skyrocketed up the charts and their next single, Rolleroaster, is out soon. Kate Whitby stirred the pot with Edele (Keavy’s twin sis) to get all the goss…

How did B*Witched meet?

It was about a year and a half ago. We lived in the same section of Dublin. Keavy was a trainee mechanic and Sinead went to get her car fixed and they got chatting. Keavy also knew Lindsay through kickboxing and we went into the studio one day and started playing. We just clicked.

How old were you when you started singing?

I never actually did before B*Witched! I never really thought about it, I just loved singing and used to sing around the house a lot.

Describe your single.

It’s fun, it’s humorous, lively and energetic.

Do you do anything special before going on stage?

We give each other a hug and say a little prayer together.

What did you do when you first heard your dong on the radio?

Screamed! We were like, “Oh I can’t believe it!” Actually, we haven’t heard our song on radio that many times – it was just in that
one day we heard it six times. Since then, we’ve only heard it two or three times.

Are you used to it now?

Yes, but when we hear it in another country, we’ll be pretty happy.

Do you all hang together?

Yeah, we do actually. And if one of us isn’t there, it feels a bit weird. We’re all best friends. (laughs) We used to live together in a house.

Do you fight a lot?

No, not at all. When we first met, we said that we were four best friends and if we fought, we wouldn’t be in the band together. So we don’t really row, and if we do, it might be ‘cos someone’s tired or putting an empty cereal box back in the pantry. (laughs)

Who gets in the most trouble?

We’re all pretty good. Probably Lindsay ‘cos she gets giddy.

Who’s the biggest joker?

Keavy. She always makes you laugh, like she’ll do these silly little faces, or funny voices and make you laugh.

Who’s the biggest party animal?

That would be Lindsay and Keavy. As a band, we haven’t gotten to do it at all, like when we toured with 911 they all went out after, and we had to get on a plane for seven hours. But if we get tome off, the girls will probably go out more than I would.

Who’s the best dancer?

We don’t really have one. When we met, we said that we would all share things equally – but I think maybe Keavy gives it that little bit more.

Which one is the best dresser?

We all have different tastes. Sinead is the sophisticated one, Lindsay would be more baggy, Keavy more cut and I’m strong. (laughs)

What do you think of other girl bands, like the Spice Girls and All Saints?

We’re grateful to the Spice Girls ‘cos they opened a big door for us. They deserve everything ‘cos they work so hard. With Geri leaving, we hope they carry on and do as well – and Geri also. The All Saints – we love them.

Who is your fave Spice Girl?

I don’t really think I have one but I think Posh is looking really well lately.

Have any of you got boyfriends?

No, since we moved to England we haven’t had time to meet anybody longer than 10 minutes, and say, “Oh, you’re cute but I have to go.” But if we ran into someone and had a relationship, I wouldn’t mind!

What, like Leonardo DiCaprio?

I don’t fancy Leo but that’s just my opinion. Girls everywhere love him. In Germany, Swede and Italy he’s on the cover of every magazine. You know who I think is cute? Jesse (Ben Unwin) from Home and Away.

What do you look for in a guy?

I don’t go for a certain look but he has to be romantic, he has to be punctual (because I have to be) and he has to get along with my twin sis, Keavy.

Do guys get nervous asking you out, now that you’re famous?

Actually, I haven’t been asked out since I’ve been famous – but we wouldn’t really call ourselves famous yet! Maybe if we do well all over the world, then we can talk. (laughs)

What’s one thing you’ll never understand about guys?

Everything! (laughs) Lots of guys say, “I’ll ring you in half an hour,” and they call an hour later. I can’t understand why they can’t be on time!

What advice would you give to girls wanting to start a band?

Believe in yourself. When you’re growing up, people ask you what you want to do, and if you say, “I want to be a singer, dancer or a performer,” they say, “But what do you want to do for a real job?” There is s much room for everybody, I think you just have to give it a
go and work hard.

What’s up next for B*Witched?

We’re in the middle of a European promotional tour. our second single is Rollercoaster and we’ve just finished recording our album. Hopefully we’ll get to Australia to promote it.

What do you know about Australia?

Koala bears. (laughs) I want to hold one!

They’re really smelly.

Are they? Oh! I think that Australia is sunny. Everyone I’ve spoken to from Australia is friendly and laid-back.

Do you know Savage garden or Silverchair?

Yeah, Savage Garden are brilliant. we have their album and play it quite a lot. Silverstool, is that what you said?

No, Silverchair?

Are they good?

Yeah, they’re grungy – and there’s three guys.

Oh really. I must take a listen!
