The Art of Cathy Amendola
Biography
Catherine Amendola's painting style is described as in the Classical Academic paintings in oils in the Italian Renaissance manner. She incorporates elements in the paintings like that of the Old Masters. Catherine begins most of her paintings with an underpainting. This is usually executed in grey-green tones called "Verdacccio", meaning 'greenish first'; at other times, she uses the "Ala prima" method, meaning 'all at once'. Catherine uses the controlled palette approach, applying her carefully prepared color pallette over her monochromatic underpainting. The results are museum quality artwork.
Catherine is also a successful textile print designer, and teaches floral workshops in her studio. Her work hangs in corpoations, law offices and private collections thoughout the US and Europe. She has been very active in a variety of community and artistic organizations, as president of the Orange Arts and Crafts Guild; as director of the Frank Covino Art Studio for five years; as a Charter Member and Chairman of the Classic Art Guild of Fairfield; and as a member of the Connecticut Classic Arts. She has also served as a juror in many art shows.
Her floral paintings reflect a sense of Victorian serenity, and at the same time a youthful vitality. Whether it be her portraits, landscapes, florals or seascapes, the viewer will be seduced by the enchanting subject. Catherine cannot remember a time she wasn't painting. She was an art major at Holy Family college in Pennsylvania and studied portraiture with Al Ruby, Yale Art School, Claudia Post Fretas, Frank Covino, Vermont and Europe.
Catherine has been the recipient of many awards. The subject of her paintings are often her children, and two of the awards she has received - First Prize for a portrait of her daughters, "Cathy and Blake", and First Prize and best in Show for a "Letter for Joanne" - were doubly satisfying.
Catherine currently lives in Orange, CT with the youngest of her three daughters, Blake, who was featured in the award-winning portrait, "My Sister's Helmet".
