A Photographic Retrospective By John Robert Rowlands

Donovan

Donovan wanted Jimmy Hendrix to record "Hurdy Gurdy Man".

According to Goldmine Magazine Nov. 13, 1992,  Donovan met Hendrix in
1966.  He reportedly told Mickie Most that he  wanted to give the song to
Hendrix....... or ask him to play on it.
Hendrix was touring at the time and not available.
Most had agreed the song should have a more "heavy" feel, however.
At the time  Donovan's singles had been dipping in the charts and he felt a change
was in order. In place of Hendrix they enlsited Allan Holdsworth of the group Blue Mink.
The song was released in May of 1968 and  became one of Donvan's his biggest hits.

Paul McCartney sings back up vocals on Mellow Yellow---- but doesn't
sing "Quite Rightly."

Mary Hopkin (Those Were the Days)  led off her debut album
called Post Card with  two Donovan songs,  Lord of the Reedy River, and I
Love My Shirt.
