13:

You are cordially invited to the holy union of Tom Scott Selticks and Mary Jane Peirce on May 2, 1993...

Kevin:

Both Carrie and I were stunned to receive wedding invitations from Tom. As the old saying goes “time flies by quickly,” and it unmistakably had-I was a 22 year old Stanford graduate, Carrie was 20 with 2 years of undergraduate studies left, and Tom was ready to wed at age 22. Tom resided in the house next to the Kensingtons. For some summers, Carrie, Tom and I spent endless hours together.

As I read the invitational card a second time, I felt the urge to ring Tom up and congratulate him on his new-found fortunate. For hours, the two of us relived our childhood bliss, recalling the many summer memories we shared with Carrie. Then, without realizing it, Tom made an ingenious suggestion.

“So I guess you’ll be showing up with Carrie by your side? I mean, you guys do go to the same school, and you do need a date don’t you Kevvy Kev?” Tom joked, but I took his suggestion into consideration. Yet one obstacle stood in my way: Gary. I did not know if he would agree to my plans.

“Wait a sec man, before I give my permission, can I ask you one thing. Do you like Carrie?” Gary asked. The question caught me off guard and I ended up gawking at him instead of answering his question.

“Oh you mean in the car right? Oh no…I was just saying that for dramatic effect. You know, to save my butt for asking if she liked you. Just forget it man, I would never fight with you for a girl, you know that right?” I answered tentatively, hoping Gary would believe me. Obviously, he did not buy it, but he agreed to let Carrie accompany me to the wedding anyhow.
