TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS AND JACKET
Each track is rated on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest score, 10 being the highest score.
OVERALL = 6.5
Take Off Your Pants And Jacket (or Take Off Your Pants And Jack It , whichever you prefer) is light-hearted and satirical; and if any band does lighted-hearted and satirical well, it is Blink 182.
- ANTHEM PART TWO = 7.0
Musical Arrangement - The song is set to rifle guitar segues and drumming, especially in the introduction and chorus.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom deliberately pronounces each word with an air of seriousness.
Lyrics - “Anthem” reaffirms the message of Green Day’s “Warning,” and expands further; it accuses the adult generation of misguiding teenagers: “If we’re fucked up/ You’re to blame…”
- ONLINE SONGS = 5.0
Musical Arrangement - “Online Songs” has recklessly rapid guitar rifts and drumming.
Vocal Deliverance - Mark stutters through the lyrics, attempting to pace himself with the music.
Lyrics - Mark is frustrated with Josie and her promiscuousness: “And I know that you dated other guys/ But I gotta wonder why you'd leave it out for me...”
- FIRST DATE = 10.0
Musical Arrangement - “First Date” is an upbeat, pop-punk love song.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom’s nasal twang is reserved and self-conscious.
Lyrics - Tom divulges his dating insecurities: “Is it cool if I hold your hand/ Is it wrong if I think it’s lame to dance/ Do you like my stupid hair/ Would you guess that I didn’t know what to wear…”
- HAPPY HOLIDAYS, YOU BASTARD = 8.0
Musical Arrangement - It is catchy and races to the finish line in 44 seconds.
Vocal Deliverance - Mark is suppressing his laughter.
Lyrics - It is one of the most humorous songs on the album: “And I’ll never talk to you again/ Unless your dad will suck me off/ I’ll never talk to you again/ Unless your mom will touch my cock/ I’ll never talk to you again/ Ejaculate into a sock…”
- STORY OF A LONELY GUY = 5.0
Musical Arrangement - “Story Of A Lonely Guy” is played at a more human, paced tempo.
Vocal Deliverance - Like on “First Date,” Tom’s nasal twang is self-doubting and insecure.
Lyrics - “Story Of A Lonely Guy” proves that in reality, the nude punk rockers are not as self-righteous as they are on television: “Lost the nerve/ Lost the girl/ Left the line/ So read my book with a boring ending/ A short story of a lonely guy
- THE ROCK SHOW = 10.0
Musical Arrangement - “The Rock Show” is a pop-punk romance song with mainstream appeal.
Vocal Deliverance - Mark’s performance is merry-in-love.
Lyrics - Mark wrote this song for his girlfriend: “Cause I fell in love with the girl at the rock show/ She said ‘What?’ I told her that I didn't know…”
- STAY TOGETHER FOR THE KIDS = 10.0
Musical Arrangement - With its piano sequences, “Stay Together” has one of the most diverse musical arrangements on the album.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom and Mark share vocal duties, with Mark on verses and Tom on the chorus.
Lyrics - Like its counterpart “Adam’s Song” on Enema Of The State, “Stay Together” is Take Off Your Pants And Jacket’s most socially conscious song; it deals with the heartache of divorce: “So when your dead and gone/ Will you remember this night, twenty years now lost…”
- ROLLER COASTER = 2.5
Musical Arrangement - “Roller Coaster” is a mechanical, mid-tempo song.
Vocal Deliverance - Mark cannot hit a note correctly.
Lyrics - The song has random vignettes: “Rollercoaster favorite ride/ Where I wait outside until you let me in/ Where you drive my car right off the fucking cliff…”
- RECKLESS ABANDON = 5.0
Musical Arrangement - “Reckless Abandon” is a fast-paced, mindlessly amusing song.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom’s vocals are uninhibited.
Lyrics - “Reckless Abandon” is the perfect summer anthem: “Everybody would waste it all/ To have a summer that they could call/ Memory thats full of fun/ Fucked up, when it's all done…”
- EVERY TIME I LOOK FOR YOU = 0.5
Musical Arrangement - Although featured on the American Pie 2 soundtrack, “Every Time I Look For You” is the least melodic song on the album.
Vocal Deliverance - Once again, Mark is fumbling and cannot hit a note correctly.
Lyrics - In a twist of fate, the least melodic song has the most scholarly lyrics: “One more point of contention/ I need some intervention/ Approach with vague intentions/ Betray my short attention span…”
- GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON = 9.5
Musical Arrangement - “Give Me One Good Reason” may have the musical arrangement to “What’s My Age Again,” except backwards.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom’s nasal is annoyingly whiny, but with reason.
Lyrics - Of course, even 20 somethings can have trouble relating to Generation X: “Why do girls want to pierce their nose/ And walk around in torn pantyhose?” Girls dress like this?
- SHUT UP = 10.0
Musical Arrangement - “Shut Up” is set to concentrated guitar rifts and drumming.
Vocal Deliverance - Mark’s off notes work within the context of the song (ie, an f-ed up drunk guy singing…)
Lyrics - “Shut Up” is most profane song in the album since the f-word is used several times within the verses alone: “Shut the fuck up she said/ I’m going fucking deaf/ …Get the fuck up, she said/ Your life is meaningless it’s going nowhere, you’re going nowhere/ You’re just a fuckup…”
- PLEASE TAKE ME HOME = 5.0
Musical Arrangement - This song passes because of Travis’ drumming.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom needs Reactine, more than ever.
Lyrics - Tom has fallen in love with his female friend: “Oh no it happenedd again/ She's cool, she's hot, she's my friend…”
- WHAT WENT WRONG (HIDDEN TRACK) = 10.0
Musical Arrangement - With its acoustic guitar backup, “What Went Wrong” is one of the most successful songs on the album because it is so uncharacteristically Blink 182.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom’s pained deliverance is appropriate.
Lyrics - It is an unwilling love song: “I'm sick of always hearing/ All the sad songs on the radio/ All day it is there to remind an over sensitive guy/ That he's lost and alone, yeah…”
- FUCKING DOGS (HIDDEN TRACK) = 0.5
Musical Arrangement - It is a joke track set to staccato acoustic chords.
Vocal Deliverance - Tom and Mark are laughing at us.
Lyrics - “Fucking and sucking and touching x 3,” need I say more?
