Note: The list may not be entirely accurate because my meager memory has been failing me as of late. The concert was half a year ago…
As the liner paragraph of the Affirmation Tour program promised, Savage Garden did entertain the almost sell-out audience at General Motors Place the “old fashioned way.” Instead of electrifying fans by flashing bright lasers and lights, Savage Garden let the music perform, conjuring pure emotion from the crowd. Firstly, fans certainly responded to the sentiments of each song, since fans could relate to the Gardeners interpretation of life. People sang along with Darren in “Affirmation” and nodded in agreement with Daz’s observations about life. Couples swayed to the hauntingly romantic tunes of “Truly, Madly, Deeply,” and “I Knew I Loved You,” uttering sweet nothings into one another’s ear. Still others reminisced about past lovers and the heartaches of life when “Hold Me,” “Crash and Burn,” “The Lover After Me,” “Two Beds and a Coffee Machine” and “To The Moon and Back” filled the arena. Wild girls and boys flung their hands in the air with the up-tempos “The Best Thing,” “Chained to You,” “The Animal Song,” “Gunning Down Romance,” “I Want You” and “Break Me, Shake Me.” Some songs just provided some peaceful, reflective serenity: “You Can Still Be Free,” “I Don’t Know You Anymore” and “Santa Monica.” Furthermore, SG was also able to deliver these interpretations of life through the human voice and the basic guitar or piano. No loud synthetic digitizers or special effects-just Darren’s sexy crooning voice and Daniel’s fingers on the ivory keys of a piano or the steel strings of an electric guitar. Each song had a certain blend, the right combination between human voice and instrument. On up-beats like “Affirmation,” “The Best Thing,” “Crash and Burn,: “Chained to You,” “The Animal Song,” “Gunning Down Romance,” “To the Moon and Back,” “I Want You” and “Break Me Shake Me,” the echoing electric guitar took center stage with Darren’s voice. On slow ballads like “Hold Me,” “I Knew I Loved You,” “The Lover After Me,” “Two Beds and a Coffee Machine,” “You Can Still Be Free,” “I Don’t Know You Anymore” and “Truly, Madly, Deeply,” the acoustic and Latin guitars, piano accompaniments and background vocals complimented Daz’s voice. All in all, SG was able to combine songwriting with performing, the voice with the instrument and in doing so captivated the audience and had everyone leaving with a tender feeling in their hearts.
