SAY WHAT?
Savage Garden songs are about love, heartache and relationships. But are the artisans behind the music-Daniel and Darren-really as innocent and charming as we would expect? After much contemplation on this matter, I have concluded that it is best for our favorite Gardening Boys to tell us themselves; therefore, I present to you a collection of memorable quotes, straight from the mouths of D & D.
ON MUSIC:
When asked their opinions about the Spice Girls:
Darren: I'd put them all in the same trash compactor as Whigfield. [A/N: they are already there]
When asked their opinions about the Backstreet Boys:
Daniel: Once people listen to the difference between our record and a Backstreet Boys’ or something like that they will hear it. And if they can’t hear it, then they were never really meant to be Savage Garden fans in all honesty.
When asked about their favorite musicians:
Daniel: At the moment, I like Alanis (Morissette) or Seal.
Darren: Michael Jackson. [A/N: picture him in front the mirror, practicing his moon-walking and crotch-grabbing skills]
ON TELEVISION:
When asked about their favorite television show:
Daniel: Seinfeld, or The Simpsons.
Darren: Seinfeld.
When asked “which Simpsons character do you think you resemble?”:
Daniel: Barney (laughs). No, maybe not, a cross between Barney and Homer. [A/N: called “Waggin” for a reason]
Darren: I'd be Bart, probably. [A/N: naughty troublemaker]
ON SCHOOL:
Daniel: I didn't go (to school) very much. My nickname was "waggin!” I was in control at school. [A/N: as suave and sophisticated back then as he is now] I had older brothers who went through the school before me. [A/N: he supposedly started a band with them back in the day, named "The Skullfuckers] They didn't have a bad reputation, but they didn't have a good one either. So my reputation was a spin-off of theirs-instant credibility.
Darren: I was normal. A completely normal kid: the school nerd. In grade eight and nine I got picked on. I was a freak - no one understood me. [A/N: what, you with your girly, curly locks?; no way!] I was the kid who wanted to be abducted by ET. [A/N: leaving this one alone] Then all the losers left in Year 10.
Daniel: I was one of those losers!
Darren: I was quite good at school and very artistic. In Year 11 it was a turn-around. I was one of the coolest kids in school. I was in school musicals: the kid who could sing. It was bizarre. I loved school. It's an amazing little world. The rules inside school are totally different from the outside world.
When asked to spell reservoir:
Daniel: Reservoir Dogs - R-E- I'm not a good speller. That comes from wagging school! I can spell dogs. D-O-G-S. [A/N: congratulations Jonesy!; lucky that he is good looking]
Darren: R-E-S-E-R-V-O-I-R. Is that right? [A/N: guarantee you that Darren will use this word at least once on his upcoming Spin album; something like: “in my reservoir of love…”]
When asked to compute the square root of 625:
Darren: Wouldn't have a clue. I got limited achievement in maths. [A/N: cute how Aussies call it “maths” instead of “math”] I loved science- biology -but I hated maths.
Daniel: 12? Don't ask me questions like that!
ON THEIR WORST HABITS:
Daniel: My worst habit would probably be...um, having a bit too much fun. [A/N: what kind of fun, Jonesy?; *bats eyelashes innocently*] I like indulging in all my bad habits.
Darren: Probably getting too emotional.
When asked about how much time is spent in front of the mirror:
Daniel on Darren: Well, he gets up three weeks before he has to go out! [A/N: really?; would NOT have been able to guess]
Darren on himself: Ohhh! Hours and hours.
Daniel on himself: 5 to 10 minutes.
ON LOVE AND SEX:
When asked “what is the most important thing in life?”:
Daniel: Love.
Darren: Love.
And my personal favorite quote:
When asked “which would you prefer: vixen or virgin?”:
Darren on Daniel: Virgin, probably.
Daniel on Darren: Vixen.
Daniel on himself: Vixen for sure. [A/N: said with such certainty too]
Darren on himself: I think for the record I'd say virgin, but deep in my heart of hearts [A/N: only Daz could be poetic when discussing “vixens”] it's always a vixen.
In essence, the last quote, which is also my personal favorite, reveals the most about the Boys; I guess they are not so innocent after all…
