When I first bought this video, I'd never even heard of the show,
but I grew to love it VERY quickly. If you don't have it yet,
I HIGHLY recommend it! Anyway, now that that little rant is over,
welcome to the nitpicker's guide to "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".
Enjoy your stay! OH! And if you see any nits I missed, don't be shy to E-Mail me with them.
New nits are marked with (**)
Prologue
-Can I just say what a kick I got out of seeing the cast as the faculty in the assembly? =)
-One of the two men closing the double doors, I believe is Donny Osmond himself (blue blazer).
-I play the piano and I can say without any hesitation that Joan Collins REALLY isn't fooling anyone with her piano playing. "You Are What You Feel" is played completely in the high notes, and she's down in the bass notes with her left hand.... sorry, pet peeve of mine.
Any Dream Will Do
-Donny seems to have a startling effect on children! Whenever he looks at one in particular while they're sitting on the stage steps, THEY STOP LIPSYNCHING. This happens both with that cute little blonde girl on his left and the boy on his right. I KNOW these kids weren't alive when the Osmonds were big, so I just have to wonder what exactly their parents told them, (Esp. the moms! ;o) ).
Jacob and Sons
-When the wives rotate past the narrator, they do a nice job of pretending they're balancing objects on their heads.... until the one with the blue urn on her head nods very matter-of-factly and we can see that the objects are actually fastened to their headresses.
-Zebulin can really burn rubber! When he pops in to indentify himself, he is on the right side of Jacob's chair. We then cut to a quick shot of Jacob and when we cut back, Zebulin the little speed devil has moved himself to the left side of the chair!
Joseph's Coat
-From reading "Making of.." articles, I know that there were several cameras on set, filming all at once. This causes some interesting shots where cast members appear to be singing to something off camera. The most noticeable of these occurances comes when the brothers sing, "The tasteful style was the ultimate in good design." Reuben and Asher are looking off to one of the other cameras.
-In the wide shot of the kids doing a large "ring around the rosie" with Joseph in the center, one girl in the second circle from the middle starts running in the wrong direction, causing the whole line to be trying to link up for the remainder of the verse.
Joseph's Dreams
-When the camera pans up the one side of the set to get all the brothers faces on "This is not the kind of thing we brothers like to see.." the Narrator is on the very top of the line. Cut to a wide shot and they are supposed to in sync, dissapear with a thump, but the narrator jumps the cue so that it looks like first she goes and THEN they go.
-On "one thing we are sure about," Napthali darts his eyes quickly to the right during his closeup. Checking to make sure he was on step, perhaps??
Poor, Poor, Joseph
-The Narrator has her black coat off for most of this number, however it magically reappears on her during the line: "In a trist the dirty deal was done. Silver coins for Jacob's favorite son."
-Really bad prop goat.... it just annoys me, so if you like it, don't jump down my throat. (I actually change the words in my head when I watch now: "Having ripped it up, they next attacked a pull-apart goat.")
One More Angel in Heaven
**- FUNNY MOMENT!! Right after Reuben says, "Adios, buckaroo!" while his wife is singing really high, he gives Isaachar a high five!
-The lighting for the ho-down is awesome, except that at one point it causes the dancer's shadows to be cast on what is supposed to be a 3D desert.... aka- You can clearly see the background is a painting.
**-In the very last dance sequence, when everybody yells "DIE!!", there is a high shot of the whole group. Look behind Reuben into the very center of the group. It looks like Judah had a little bit of a problem getting his partner up and over his head--while everyone else is in their ending pose, he's busy pulling her skirt off of his head! (Veroni Note: This is a "blink and you'll miss it" moment, but it's there nontheless!!)
Potiphar
-Again, must mention how much fun it was to see the same actors who play Joseph's brothers, playing Potiphar's servants.
-One of the servants, (he also plays Judah.. can't miss him) looses his glasses and you can see him glasses-free over Potiphar's shoulder while the big guy sings, "Joseph! I'll see you rot in jail!". A quick cut back to the same angle shows them back on his face when Potiphar says, "The things you have done are beyond the pale!"
Close Every Door
-In the last "...for we have been promised.." Joseph quickly darts his eyes to the side on "have" (for reference, it's the same thing Napthali did in Joseph's Dreams).
Go, Go, Go, Joseph
-According to the credits, both Drew Varley and Byrn Walters (Mungojerrie and Macavity respectively) from the Cats video are go-go dancers in this song. Watch for them! (And if you happen to spot them, drop me a line and let me know what they're wearing so I can make this note more specific about what exactly they're doing!)
Pharaoh Story
-WHOOPSIE! The Narrator's chair does a fun dissapearing act soon after she sets in behind her and out of the way on the stage. It remains convieniently invisible for the remainder of the song. Glad she didn't try to sit down again!
Poor, Poor, Pharaoh
ANYONE SPOTTED SOMETHING?
Song of the King
-CUTENESS! When Pharaoh does his own version of the Rum Tum Tugger hip swivvel and makes his female servants go ga-ga for him, the eyes on the large sphinx head follow him from side to side.
-Again, I'm easilly amused. The actors playing the brothers can be seen in this number as Pharaoh's male servants.
Pharaoh's Dreams Explained
ANYONE SEEN SOMETHING??
Stone the Crows
-After the first, "adoration attack" on Joseph, one of the Blue Gals' heads jerks up on Pharaoh's "HEY!", causing her gold headband to fall to the floor. No fear though... it's right back where it should be in a quick subsequent shot.
-The Narrator is making some pretty cute faces at Joseph's new fanclub. Can anyone here say "jealous"?
Those Canaan Days
-It's pretty darn obvious that SEVERAL of the brothers miss the red can when they toss their ciggies away.
-Big laugh moment after the Apache Dancer finishes and is lunging onto Jacob's lap. If you notice, she lands with her skirt blown up on her back. Asher notices and quickly pulls her skirt back down!!
The Brothers Come to Egypt/Grovel, Grovel
-Watch this scene several times and be treated to some really hysterical "groveling" on the part of the brothers.
-The oversized corn ears. Very cute, but as Joseph "vends" them to his brothers, one gets stuck causing a backup for the last ears. Ever concientious of his brothers needs, Joseph quickly unclogs the buildup and chucks the last ears to the waiting brothers, (Asher even does a little handclap as if to say: "Throw 'er here Joe!")
Who's the Thief?"
-Look carefully and you can see the "light-up fruit cutouts" on the starry backdrop for the next song before we're supposed to know that they're there.
Benjamin Calypso
-JUDAH CRACKS ME UP!!! **big grin**
-During the first verse, right before Judah starts singing, his wide shot actions of him in back don't match the close ups. An example of this would be spreading his arms out in the wide shot, but the closeup showing them comfortably down by his sides.
-Just in case you forgot, Judah cracks me up.... and after watching this song, I tend to think Donny Osmond agrees with me. I'm not sure exactly how much of his reactions were scripted, but Donny seems to be on the brink of laughter for most of this song.
**-Right before (and while) Judah's walking arm in arm with Joseph and the Narrator, and Judah sings, "Sure as the tide on the golden sand", look up on the stairs in front of the pharaoh head. Isaachar's gettin' funky with with one of the background girls! Keep watching, and he does something naughty, and she slaps him!
Joseph all the Time/Jacob in Egypt
-You can tell where they cut and started the scene again. As Joseph embraces Benjamin, the angle changes and everyone is suddenly grinning MUCH wider.
**-When all the kids run up on stage, you see a shot of Benjamin about to pick a girl up, then in the next shot, he's right about to pick her up again. Then in the next shot, he's dancing! Can we say editing?
-Joseph dismounts a leetle bit too quickly and his sturdy chariot of gold rocks a little. (Personally, I'd file a complaint with Pharaoh. I mean, someone could get seriously hurt jumping off one of those things to go reunite with their long lost father!!)
Any Dream Will Do/Give Me My Colored Coat
-That Star of David formation at the end is so awesome!
