Sugar Ray

Bio

FORMED: 1992
Heavy-metal guitar ruckus, a reggae-centric groove-heavy rhythm section and the turntable pyrotechnics of one DJ Homicide -- that encompasses Sugar Ray's brand of alternative rock. Coming together in 1992 from the various bedroom communities in Orange County, California, vocalist Mark McGrath, guitarist Rodney Sheppard, bassist Murphy Karges, drummer Stan Frazier and Craig "DJ Homicide" Bullock played around the area and later signed with Atlantic, which released Lemonade & Brownies in 1995. Sugar Ray toured almost non-stop during the next two years, opening for the Sex Pistols, Cypress Hill and Korn. Second album Floored hit the Top 20 upon release in 1997, led by the number one modern rock single "Fly." 14:59 followed in 1999, generating the pop hits "Every Morning" and "Someday." A self-titled fourth effort appeared in spring 2001. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

News

With wives, babies, and fiancées as part of their entourage these days, it's not a surprise that the members of Sugar Ray had relationships on their minds when making the band's fourth album, Sugar Ray. The first single from the album, "When It's Over," is a prime example, as singer Mark McGrath and bassist Murphy Karges explain. "We wrote that on tour actually and it, you know, it basically sets the tone for the whole record," singer McGrath tells CDNOW in an upcoming interview. "It's about relationships. All of us are going through relationships. We're at that age now where, you know, we're thinking ahead thinking for the future and I guess it comes across in the songwriting. And, when I wrote the lyric, 'when it's over, that's the time I fall in love again,' it's sort of like the grass is always greener, you know, [like] 'With Or Without You' -- can't live with or without you."
