Switchfoot

Bio

Switchfoot, the San Diego-based power trio that caught the Christian music industry flat-footed with its 1997 debut, The Legend of Chin, and then had the nerve to follow it up with a brilliant sophomore project, New Way to Be Human, is back. While most bands grow arithmetically, Switchfoot has progressed exponentially. Maybe it's the production collaboration of three-time Dove-award-winning producer Charlie Peacock and mainstream producer Jacquire King (Third Eye Blind). Maybe it's the honing of skills that comes from three years of incessant touring. Maybe it's the discipline that comes from writing a new song every day, as frontman Jonathan Foreman does. Whatever it is, the effect is mesmerizing.
Learning to Breathe, Switchfoot's latest release, cannily combines acoustic and electric-guitar-driven power-pop wrapped around modern ruminations of ancient truths. "The tension is here / Between who you are and who you could be / Between how it is and how it should be / …Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell," Jon Foreman sings with a passion that seems caught between challenging the doubter and challenging the truth.
Exploring themes of broken humanity, spiritual rebirth, and learning to live in the newness of life in Christ, Switchfoot rides the tension between what is and what should be with a delicate confidence. Best tracks include the alternately acoustic and distorted "Love Is the Movement," the West Coast alterna-rocker "Innocence Again," and the sweetly metaphorical "The Economy of Grace."
