Planet Maya

Just as you don't expect a classical pianist to sport blue and pink hair extensions and to cite Bjork and John Cage as idols, enormous squinned chiffon skirts are not quite what one would predict from a member of the Fiennes clan. But welcome to Maya Fiennes, wife of Magnus (brother of Ralph and Joseph), and the designer behind a spanking brand new label called Planet Maya.

She moved to London from Macedonia five years ago to train as a classical pianist. Then she met her husband - he is a music producer, behind such hits as All Saints' Never Ever - and began to design clothes for herself. She has not neglected her music, though; her second album, Endless Faith, is out next month.

Planet Maya is best described as "customised vintage", a style still beloved by the coolest fashionistas. Massive tulle skirts with kitsch religious images hanging off the zips, ripped denim jackets with trails of lace on the sleeves and torn vest tops decorated with foil and sequins are just a few of the one-off pieces she has designed since the label's birth last spring. Currently available in only one trendy London boutique, Anna, it will be launched properly in February and the clothing will be sold in selected outlets around Britain. Despite its exclusivity, it has already garnered accolades from the likes of the Sugababes and Miss Ubiquitous, Lady Victoria Hervey.
