Theatre of the year
A bloody good show

The musical may be stuck in the past, but a rash of dramas rooted in contemporary life bodes well for the future

At the Crucible in Sheffield, Joseph Fiennes achieved the unlikely feat of packing in crowds for a rarely staged Christopher Marlowe play: Michael Grandage's dark, clear, rapid production of Edward II.

- From Imdb: Joseph Fiennes' Sex Scenes Leave Audience Laughing

Joseph Fiennes is in danger of losing his sex symbol status after steamy sex scenes from his latest movie with Heather Graham left cinema audiences laughing. The Shakespeare In Love heart-throb and brother of Ralph Fiennes, stars opposite Graham in the erotic thriller Killing Me Softly, but, far from thrilling cinema audiences, the scenes of kinky sex actually raised a laugh. It's the latest in a long line of flops for Fiennes, whose latest films Dust and Enemy At The Gates have both been critical failures.

Stars Gather For Double Celebration

Dame Judi Dench was in high spirits as she received the prestigious BAFTA Academy Fellowship on the same night as her 67th birthday. A host of stars congregated at London's Haymarket Theatre - where Judi is currently starring in the Royal Family - to pay tribute to the career of the Oscar winning actress. Judi remarked afterwards: "Its a hell of a way to spend your birthday."

Attending the event were Billy Connolly, Pierce Brosnan, John Hurt, Dame Maggie Smith, Lord Richard Attenborough, Richard E. Grant, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes, June Whitfield and Rufus Sewell. The tribute, which will be televised on the BBC in January, was hosted by Stephen Fry.

Kate Winslet, Sir Ian McKellan, Cher, Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Spacey also spoke glowingly about Judi via a video link.

At the end of the evening, Lord Attenborough presented the BAFTA mask to Judi while Billy Connolly gave her a bouquet of flowers. The audience cheered and applauded - something Dame Judi must be very used to.
