New York v London: the party battle; Where are the best parties in the world? TOBY YOUNG in New York and NICKY HASLAM in London reveal their pre -Christmas diaries

To be perfectly honest, I don't suppose Tyra Banks would have gone home with me even if I had managed tochat her up. Believe it or not, supermodels tend not to be very interested in short, bald, 36-year-old British hacks. I went to a total of 13 Christmas parties last week and the only time I managed to persuade a gorgeous girl to stop looking over my shoulder was when Joseph Fiennes wandered past. Among the glitterati, it's considered so "trailer park" to gawk at celebrities that, whenever one comes near, you look anywhere but straight at them. Consequently, when Fiennes was standing right next to me, the frisky young model I was talking to looked me directly in the eye for the first time that evening. Then she left with Joseph Fiennes.

Working Title, the independent company which produced Elizabeth and Notting Hill, is also seriously considering making a Bollywood film. The company recently held its Christmas party in the style of a Bollywood premiere. Snippets of Hindi films were screened in a large warehouse in London's East End, and stalls served regional Indian cuisine. Western stars masqueraded as Bollywood icons - Joseph Fiennes, who was dressed as an Indian prince, was generally voted the most handsome man. Cate Blanchett came dressed as a "Ramu Kaka" - the ubiquitous manservant character in every Hindi film who wears homespun cotton clothes. [Okay. Where are the pictures from that one?]
