- News about KMS and Director Chen Kaige from Reuters/Variety, June 27, 2001:

Chen Kaige set for honor at Swiss fest
By Derek Elley

LONDON (Variety) - Chinese director Chen Kaige, helmer of a string of fest favorites from "Yellow Earth" to "Farewell My Concubine," will be honored at the 54th Locarno Film Festival (Aug. 2-12).

Following in the footsteps of Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean-Luc Godard, Samuel Fuller and Jacques Rivette, Chen will receive the Leopard of Honor on Aug. 3, in tandem with a screening of one of his films (still to be selected by the director) in the Swiss-Italian town's Piazza Grande.

Earlier this year, Chen wrapped his first English-language feature, the psychodrama "Killing Me Softly," in London. The picture, which stars Heather Graham and Joseph Fiennes, is still in post-production and will not be ready for Locarno, festival sources said.

- German TV alert:

On Monday, July 2, German ZDF TV will show "Stealing Beauty" (the German title is "Gefühl und Verführung") at 22.15 hrs. It will be repeated Tuesday night at 0.30 hrs.

- Two blurbs about Mallory:

Outside Online News

"Outside Online reports that a $50 million film about the lives and deaths of British Mount Everest pioneers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine will start production this autumn in Nepal, Canada and Britain. Joseph Fiennes will play the role of Mallory, who died in 1924 attempting to climb the world's highest peak."

MALLORY WILL CONQUER EVEREST - ON FILM

"GEORGE Mallory is expected to be portrayed as the first man to conquer Everest in a film - even though no one yet knows if he made it to the top before dying on the mountain. Work on the film - starring Shakespeare In Love actor Joseph Fiennes - is due to begin this year."

- TV alert:

Bravo is re-airing the "Family Fiennes Profile" on Thursday, June 28th at 11am est (but check your local listings). It's an hour in length and identical to the Blood Ties programme which aired on the BBC.

June 17, 2001

- Today's Mail on Sunday (UK) has some KMS pics and this write-up about the film:

Pictured making short work of a thug in a scene from his latest film, JOSEPH FIENNES appears to be putting his reputation behind him. This film is controversial erotic thriller Killing Me Softly. Shot in London, it is about a beautiful woman (played by American actress Heather Graham) who dumps her boyfriend for a passionate fling with Fiennes's dangerous mountaineer. The pair's steamy sex scenes have already attracted the attention of British censors ahead of the film's release next year. Clearly Fiennes has a thing about mountains: he has just agreed to star as British climber George Mallory in a film about the fateful 1924 Mount Everest expedition.

- Rottentomatoes.com has posted the theatrical release date for KMS in the US (wide) as 31 August, 2001.

- EATG is now available for pre-order too on www.amazon.com. Release date is listed as 14 August, 2001.
Order the DVD, Region 1 for $22.49 and the VHS, NTSC for (gulp) $106.99.

- Online Star Wars role poll on www.theforce.net:

Joseph Fiennes is being considered for the role of Admiral Piett by TheForce.Net in the next 2 Star Wars movies, to be released in 2002 and 2005. He's up against fellow British actors Jonathan Firth & Steven Mackintosh. Voting ends on July 2nd, 2001.
The poll can be found at: www.theforce.net
Not sure how serious this is, but anyway, have fun voting.
Ralph "won" the role of Grand Moff Tarkin already. ;)

- From peoplenews.com: The Ashram

Creature Comfort
Lovely isolated little hotel on the beautiful island of Isla Grande. The nearest village is a 45-minute kayak away, but you won't have the energy to go anyway. This is not a softly-softly spa tickle-ego, massage-back kind of place. This is boot camp, but with less food (so Barbra Streisand says).

Sitting Pretty
Joseph Fiennes, Jesse Jackson, Mariella Frostrup. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt are fans of the chic, hideaway version in Los Angeles.

Top Treatments
Don't be fooled by yogic connotations. This is the hairshirt version of a spa - you kayak, a lot, and trek through heavy jungle, a lot. And get up at 7am. And play volleyball. And do exercises. Tummy ones.

Keep 'em Sweet
Your fellow trippers. You share bedrooms and bathrooms.

Fuel
Certainly none of the Babylonian treats of home. Forget caffiene, nicotine, and alcohol, and embrace boiled eggs, bags of apricots and almonds, plenty of water and a rattling mass of vitamins.

Bonus Points
After a week, you'll have lost weight, your skin will glow, and you'll feel - even if you're a lapsed Catholic with a treacle-covered Mother Superior locked away in your upstairs cupboard - joyously clean inside and out.

- Some press coverage from yesterday's Macmillan Cancer Relief Charity event:

DAILY MAIL (London)
June 12, 2001 By Richard Kay and Tom Rawstorne

THE ULTIMATE PARTY

It was one of those rare evenings when Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles were little more than faces in the crowd.

The couple were almost able to lose themselves at an extraordinary gathering of the rich and famous.

The guest list for last night's charity gala at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire featured the stars of high fashion and even higher finance plus a sprinkling of nobility and showbiz glamour.

It was perhaps the ideal occasion for the Prince to take Mrs Parker Bowles on another bold step down the bumpy road towards public acceptance.

The guests numbered the billionaire Gettys and Graffs, Rothschilds and Mellons alongside princes and princesses of fashion such as Armani, Valentino and Versace.

Then came the beauties who helped make the designers famous - Naomi Campbell, Elle MacPherson, Kate Moss, Sophie Dahl, Jemma Kidd, Jade Jagger and the obligatory Elizabeth Hurley. Even President Bush's model niece Lauren Bush flew in, wearing a denim jacket over her long white gown.

Film stars Joseph Fiennes and Patsy Kensit, Coronation Street's Amanda Barrie, Sir Elton John and racing driver Eddie Irvine were other big names at the function to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

By the time they had finished enjoying themselves on the mirrored dancefloor the charity was GBP 500,000 richer.

For Charles and Camilla, the event marked the start of two days of official togetherness.

Tonight they will be side by side at a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, where they will be very much the centre of attention.

Last night, however, one sensed they could relax.

- Fashionistas join forces against cancer

By Sam Greenhill, PA
London
Tuesday 12 June 2001

The Prince of Wales, accompanied by his mistress Camilla Parker Bowles, teamed up with actress Amanda Barrie at a star-studded charity extravaganza to raise cash for the battle against cancer.

Barrie, whose character Alma Halliwell in Coronation Street is about to die of cervical cancer, posed with Charles in the grounds of magnificent Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire.

She was among a galaxy of celebrities at the biggest ever gathering of fashion designers in the UK in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Relief charity.

The Prince, a fan of Coronation Street, asked her: "Have you gone yet?"

Barrie, wearing an olive Issey Miyake full-length dress, told Charles that her character was due to die next week.

"It's very good for soaps if it can help boost cancer awareness," she added later.

She said she had thought long and hard about the emotional storyline, adding: "The only thing that really worried me was that I thought it was such a horrible tale that it would put people off, but it hasn't. There's been a huge increase in smears and scans."

Parker Bowles confided to Ms Barrie that she was a fan of the TV soap, the actress said.

The prince also met models Sophie Dahl and Naomi Campbell, actress Patsy Kensit and designer Donatella Versace.

Donatella said afterwards: "He asked me if my dress was Versace and I said of course it is, I hope yours is too."

Campbell said: "He's very dashing. He loves clothes."

The centrepiece of the event was seven pavilions, each representing a showcase of different international fashion designers such as Giorgio Armani, Sir Paul Smith and Asprey & Garrard, which the Prince and Mrs Parker Bowles toured before dinner.

The Asprey & Garrard pavilion, decked in fabulous silverware on a purple velvet table, had a surprise in store for the royal visitor.

Poking out through the centre of the table, keeping very still, was Russian model Svetlana Dembrikaia.

Charles burst out laughing when he realised the model was real, and asked the 22-year-old, wearing a green "spaghetti" bikini and covered in purple makeup: "Are you all real?"

Charles later met Formula One racing driver Eddie Irvine and discussed the Monaco Grand Prix. And he spoke to singer Kylie Minogue, who was wearing a virtually see-through white dress.

Also at the party were Tommy Hilfiger and model Lauren Bush, 16, US President George W Bush's niece.

Other guests included Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish, Natasha Caine, daughter of Sir Michael, actor Joseph Fiennes and his girlfriend Fiona Jolly , Tamara Beckwith, Ruby Wax, models Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson and the lead singer of Texas, Sharleen Spiteri.

- Charles and Camilla gaze at the stars

The London Times
By Lisa Armstrong

Not since Donatella Versace and De Beers co-hosted an evening of a trillion diamonds at Syon Park two years ago has there been such a gathering of venerable old rocks in one place as there was at Waddesdon Manor last night.

I refer, of course, to the jewels and twinkling gowns that were the dress code and not to Sting, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles, who was wearing a gown by Antony Price.

The evening, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Relief, was the idea of Alexandra Shulman, editor-in-chief of Vogue, and was co-chaired by Madonna and Lord Rothschild, who had long toyed with the idea of organising a fashion event at Waddesdon. This was an impressive and aesthetically pleasing crowd and, as is the vogue these days, mind-bogglingly eclectic: a little bit of fashion, a little bit of pop. Ferdinand de Rothschild, who feared his 45-room manor would eventually fall into decay, would have been most gratified.

Joseph Fiennes was cheekbone to cheekbone with Kylie Minogue, Stella McCartney, Kate Moss, Bianca Jagger, Joan Collins, Jemima Khan, Patsy Kensit and Naomi Campbell. They and 800 other guests had gathered to dine, to dance and to view eight pavillions created for the evening by the world's more glamorous designers, among them Donatella Versace, Alexander McQueen, Georgio Armani and Tom Ford of Gucci.

Undoubtedly the evening was a success. Waddesdon had never looked more glorious; thousands of pounds were raised and the Jaguars that chauffeured many of the guests through the narrow Buckinghamshire lanes passed the ultimate jiggle test: disgorging their passengers at Waddesdon without a single molecule of Botox out of place.

Fashion world throws a royal garden party

Daily Telegraph
Tuesday 12 June 2001
By Hilary Alexander, Fashion Editor and Richard Alleyne

The Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles attended a charity gala of unprecedented glamour last night.

At what was described as a cross between a royal garden party and Oscar night, the grounds of Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire were buzzing with A-list guests from the worlds of fashion, film and music.

The designers Giorgio Armani, Sir Paul Smith and Stella McCartney were there, along with Donatella Versace and Alexander McQueen. Also at the party were models Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, Mick Jagger, his daughter Jade, Sir Elton John and Joseph Fiennes, the actor who starred in Shakespeare in Love.

More than 500 people paid £646 each to attend the event which was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief, of which Prince Charles is a patron. The summer splendour of the manor house was a perfect backdrop for the party which was organised by British Vogue and sponsored by Jaguar.

Built 125 years ago in the style of a 16th century chateau by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, the banking mogul, to entertain politicians, painters, writers and royalty, Waddesdon Manor has since become a jewel in the crown of the National Trust.

It is home to one of the most complete collections of 18th French decorative art. Dotted around the manicured gardens, recently returned to their former glory, seven of the world's leading fashion houses - Armani, Asprey and Garrard, Burberry, Christian Dior, Gucci, McQueen and Donatella Versace - displayed their latest designs in specially built pavilions. Guests then sat down to sip Laurent Perrier champagne and eat smoked duck and seared sea bass. Wines from the Rothschild cellar were also served.

Mrs Parker Bowles and the Prince arrived in separate cars but entered the gala together at around 7pm. She wore a silver and dusty pink dress, in a 1930s vintage style designed by Antony Price who described it as looking like "morning mist over peonies in a meadow". The dress set off a diamond and silver necklace, said to be a family heirloom.

Amanda Barrie, the Coronation Street actress whose character Alma Halliwell is currently battling cervical cancer in the soap, spoke with Prince Charles about the storyline. The Prince asked her: "Have you gone yet?" Barrie told him that her character was due to die next week. She said: "I told him I was 'going' soon. It's very good for soaps if it can help boost cancer awareness. It's all to the good." Also at the event was Conrad Black, the chairman of Hollinger, the owner of The Daily Telegraph, and his wife Barbara Amiel.

Mr Armani, whose guests included Natasha Caine, Lady Helen Taylor and Princess Alexandra of Greece, was wearing a dinner jacket from his own label accessorised with a diamond and silver bracelet by Gucci. Patsy Kensit and Sophie Dahl arrived together, both wearing plunge neck Versace dresses.

The Italian designer Donatella Versace gave a sneak preview of a design from the new haute couture collection she will show in Paris next month - an hourglass, fish-tail gown in fluorescent lime and canary yellow with sequins and beads. The presence of Madonna on the honorary committee was enough to ensure an extraordinary flurry of interest in the event. The singer, however, just starting her European tour, was unable to attend.

A brace of waterfalls flanked a giant video screen on which images from British Vogue were projected. On each table, clothed in black, was a single white orchid, wrapped in a Vogue fashion image and floating on a sea of mist and glitter. After dinner, a further 200 guests arrived for dancing and a firework display to synchronised music.

An X-type Jaguar customised by Sir Paul Smith will be auctioned by Ruby Wax, and Henry Wyndham of Sotheby's, to raise funds for the charity. Alexandra Shulman, editor of Vogue, said: "It's a momentous gathering of some of the world's most highly respected names in fashion. I am honoured to be a part of this and am pleased to be able to support Macmillan Cancer Relief which does extraordinary work to help people living with cancer across the UK."

- Some family news about Martha's pregnancy and her new project, which could involve Joe and Ralph:

Associated Newspapers Ltd.
DAILY MAIL (London)
June 4, 2001
By Nigel Dempster

Although five months pregnant and unlikely to fit into many designer outfits at the moment, Ralph Fiennes's younger sister Martha wasn't stopped from showing up at the hip boutique Voyage in Fulham Road to view their latest collection the other day. But conversation soon turned to her favourite topic: films. 'I'm working on a script about a London escort girl,' says Martha, a film director who worked with her heartthrob brother on Onegin in 1998.'I have a few possible leads in mind, including Nicole Kidman. I've read several essays on the topic and find it fascinating.'

- And about the same event from the Express, June 4, 2001:

Martha Fiennes, the director sister of Hollywood actors Ralph and Joseph, was on effervescent form at the launch of the autumn/winter collection of the exclusive, members only Fulham Road clothes shop, Voyage. For Martha has a new project. "I'm working on a film about a highclass escort, " revealed Martha, 36, who directed Ralph in the film adaptation of Pushkin's Onegin (another brother, Magnus, composed the music). "The research has been very interesting - I've met some amazing women," she added, before suggesting that Ralph, 38, and Joe, 31, could be involved. "I haven't cast the film, so you never know, " she said before turning her attention to the clothes. Was she worried she might be turned away from the shop, which memorably ejected Naomi Campbell last year? "My sister-in-law is a huge devotee, so they usually let me in," she whispered. "When we were shooting Onegin, I brought Liv Tyler here and she practically bought the place up."

- Seems like Joe is ready for a family:

The Mirror, June 8, 2001
SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE WITH A POUNDS 1.2M SQUAT;
FIENNES AND FIONA CREATE DREAM HOME
Alun Palmer Deputy Showbusiness Editor

ACTOR Joseph Fiennes has paid pounds 1.2million for a dilapidated house used as a squat for nearly six years. The star of Shakespeare in Love and girlfriend Fiona Jolly will spend another pounds 200,000 on turning it into a perfect family home. Before the six-bedroom house went on the market, a mountain of rubbish had to be removed and the entire place disinfected. A friend told of their plans for the four-storey property in fashionable Notting Hill, West London. "Fiona and Joe are very much in love. They have bought this together as a commitment to each other and to show that this really is it. "Fiona has already joked that there is more than enough room for a nursery and she already has her eye on a small room upstairs." Fiennes, 31, saw the house - five minutes' walk from his old flat - four weeks ago. Within days, he returned with a surveyor and make-up artist Fiona, 29. Despite its recent shabby past, Fiennes offered pounds 1.2million cash to beat another bidder. Now architects and designers will supervise the gutting of the house - bought in both names - and transform it into the ideal home. Landscapers will turn the untidy 50ft garden into a green oasis. A year ago, Fiennes was in a turbulent relationship with supermodel Naomi Campbell. But he fell instantly in love with Fiona after they met through mutual friends. Those close to them say it cannot be long before they decide to marry.

But the Shakespeare in Love actor plans to turn the house in fashionable Notting Hill into a palace. The six-bedroom house in had to be disinfected before potential buyers could view it. A friend of Fiennes, 31, said he and girlfriend Fiona Jolly adored the house. One said: 'They can see the huge potential it has. It's in one of the most desirable parts of London and will become the perfect family home.' Fiennes apparently offered £1.2 million cash for the house to beat another bidder. Now architects and designers will supervise the gutting of the house to turn it into an ideal home. Among his neighbours will be former Express editor Rosie Boycott, who lives opposite his new home.

- From Ananova.com comes more information on "Mallory":

Joseph Fiennes and Iain Glen are set to team up to play heroic mountaineers in the movie drama Mallory. The 1920s period drama is based on the real-life events surrounding the ascent of Mount Everest by George Mallory and Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine. They were 1,000ft from the summit when they disappeared into a snowstorm and failed to return. Cate Blanchett is also wanted as a love interest in the £12 million adventure, which is due to be made in the autumn by United Productions. Scotsman Glen, about to be seen in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, will play Irvine. A senior source told Ananova: "There is quite a bit of rigorous training involved, though only a second unit will probably be going to Tibet. "Most of the close-up climbing sequences will be shot in the studios."

- From an article in The Sunday Mail Australia, March 25, 2001 by Darrel Giles, about Heather Graham:

"In Killing Me Softly, she portrays a research scientist living in London who meets the mysterious Adam (Joseph Fiennes). She soon heads back to his apartment for furious sex, dumping her safe relationship with her boyfriend, drawn instead to the strange man... who has a dark secret.

The film, based on the novel of the same title by Nicci French, features Chinese director Chen Kaige (The Emperor and the Assassin, Farewell My Concubine, Temptress Moon), in his American movie debut.

"He (Kaige) is such a cool person. He made everyone feel at ease. He is a thorough professional. He came so prepared every day, with ideas to make it work. But it was nerve-racking. We (she and Fiennes) were both really nervous and that first day came when we had to do that sex scene, we thought, 'What did we get ourselves into?'

"It is a story about people, a love story, it's not that out-there. We are just trying to show human behaviour, relationships, that's what happens."

Killing Me Softly is due for release in September

- JOSEPH FIENNES IN LOVE [let's wish them all the luck in the world :)]

May 31, 2001 (WENN via COMTEX) -- Publicity shy JOSEPH FIENNES has finally come out about his latest love - after being snapped playing with his girlfriend on a tennis court.

The SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE star managed to keep his secret romance with make-up artist FIONA JOLLY under wraps for a year. But the 31-year-old hunk's love match has been caught on camera, after the pair were spotted fooling around during a game of tennis near Joseph's home in London's Notting Hill.

Fun-loving Fiona, 29, replaced supermodel NAOMI CAMPBELL in the actor's life after being introduced by mutual friends at a dinner party. A pal of the pair says, "Fiona is perfect for him as she is used to celebrities and isn't fazed by them. She is as down to earth as he is and hates all the falseness and pretension you find in show business circles. They are very, very happy together and there has been talk of them moving in together. But it is too early to say which way it will go." (KW/WNTMI)

- The date for the Sane charity event has changed!

Due do problems with the electrics, it is now going to be on the 30th June instead. Joe's attendance on that later date is unclear.
