- Another New role for Joe!

Ananova March 29, 2001:

JOSEPH FIENNES TIPPED FOR FARENHEIT 451 REMAKE

Joseph Fiennes is being tipped to star in a re-make of the Francois Truffaut classic Fahrenheit 451.

The original film starred German actor Oskar Werner, Julie Christie and Cyril Cusack.

It is based on the Ray Bradbury science fiction novel about rebels refusing orders to burn books.

The film was originally being produced by Mel Gibson's company Icon, and Gibson himself was going to star as freedom fighter Fireman Montag.

The Green Mile's director Frank Darabont has now taken charge of the project, and is reported to have targeted Fiennes, 30, for the lead role.

Charlize Theron is favourite to play the beautiful rebel who convinces him to join their cause.

A senior source told Ananova: "Gibson gave way in the end because he thought he was too long in the tooth. It needed a younger guy."

- New role for Joe!

Sunday Express March 25, 2001:

NEW HEIGHTS FOR FIENNES IN MALLORY ROLE
HENRY FITZHERBERT

Joseph Fiennes is to play the climber George Mallory in a big budget account of the fateful 1924 Mount Everest expedition. The film makers will court controversy by claiming that Mallory and his partner, Sandy Irvine, did reach the summit before they disappeared into the ice and died, a full 29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing officially became the first to do so.

"It's a very expensive movie and so you can't go out with a damp squib, it has to have an inspirational ending," says a source close to the project, a co-production between September films and United Productions.

Michelle Buck, one of the producers of the $ 35million project, won't be drawn on the contentious climax, but does admit the film "will come down one way or the other".

She adds: "I can't possibly tell you how it ends, that's part of the fun of it. You'll have to pay your GBP 10 to find out." She confirms that Fiennes is set to play Mallory, whose well-preserved body was discovered on the mountainside two years ago. The mystery surrounding the expedition has made it almost more famous than Hillary's.

"It's a very powerful story and we're really excited," adds Buck.

The script, which is still in draft stage, might also dwell on suggestions that Mallory was homosexual.

"I'm very interested in his relationship with Irvine who was very inexperienced when he was chosen," says Buck.

The project will shoot later this year in the Himalayas and Canada.

- From Liz Smith's column, March 15, 2001:

Christine Baranski is preparing to play a villainess in DreamWorks' animated film "Sinbad," with Russell Crowe. Christine is the evil goddess Eris, who causes no end of trouble for Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joseph Fiennes and Crowe - who is, of course, Sinbad the Sailor.

- From the Edward II theatre programme:

"Joseph has also worked on two animated features, providing the voice of the title character in Beowolf for Right Angle Productions and Proteus in Dreamworks's Sinbad."

- From imdb People News:

Heather Graham is set to shock fans in her new film Killing Me Softly. The movie which co-stars Joseph Fiennes features rough sex, public sex and sadomasochism. Censors have yet to decide on whether on which certificate the movie will need. Heather, 30, says, "Some people were telling me that perhaps I should not do such a darkly erotic film, but I have to accept that this stuff just interests me. I like to think I am comfortable with my own sexuality. It is a risk, but I have become braver with each film so far." Fiennes spent seven solid days in bed with the Hollywood siren simulating sex for the film, set for a Fall release. He says, "It is very passionate and very physical. He falls in love with Graham's character, and their relationship is excessive to the point of becoming dangerous. She leaves her boyfriend, they marry quickly and the sex becomes darker and very adventurous. She then starts getting obscure letters, saying that he has killed previous girlfriends and also raped someone. So, is this complicated man a murderer and a rapist?" Fiennes portrays climber, Adam Tallis, who dumps his wife after meeting Alice Loudon (Graham) at a pedestrian crossing in London. Later that evening they end up in bed together.

Claudia Nella who teaches private clients Dynamic yoga (a version of Ashtanga) has noticed a dramatic change in perception in the past year: "Before it was considered a bit 'culty' and no one imagined it was a good option for a work out. Now everyone wants to do yoga." And now the choice is virtually unlimited: you can feel the burn in 100F heat (Bikram yoga); go the Madonna, Sting, Tim Jefferies route (Ashtanga); try a deeper, slower workout (Iyengar, as practised by Lili Dent-Brocklehurst), take up the more spiritual Sivananda, or Hatha yoga, which Faustomaria describes as the "colourless yoga" (Joseph Fiennes is a regular at his class, to name a few. The theory is that you need different types of yoga at different times of your life, but it's also true that there is rivalry between yoga style factions (which boils down to Ashtanga being looked on as the fast fix).

- The Independent UK, Feb 15, 2001, by Daisy Price

Sivananda Yoga
A spiritual form of yoga based on 12 basic postures, helps to relieve stress. Involves a lot of lying down. This is how Joseph Fiennes likes to relax.

PRIVATE LIFE INVADED
For Joseph Fiennes, starring in the Second World War drama Enemy at the Gates was like a class reunion.

He had previously worked with both his British co-stars, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz.

"Jude and I met at drama school in London when I was 20 years old. We used to do class scenes together. Rachel and I both had small roles in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty," recalls Fiennes.

Enemy at the Gates, which opens Friday, is a major studio release so Fiennes is bracing himself for another major invasion of his privacy.

"I try so hard to live outside the spotlight but whenever I have a big movie opening, it's accompanied by a media frenzy. It's the only time people are interested in my private life."

The last time this happened for Fiennes was when he had back-to-back roles in the Oscar-nominated films Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth.

Fiennes has been busy these past two years with two more films scheduled for release this year.

First is Killing Me Softly, the first English-language film for Chinese director Kaige Chen, who directed Farewell My Concubine.

He also completed Dust for Milcho Manchevski, the Macedonian filmmaker who received an Oscar nomination for Before the Rain.

- Quote in today's New York Post:

"Joseph Fiennes - My whole family has kids. At home I'm just known as Uncle Joe who does party tricks."

- From Emilia Fox' diary at Peoplenews.com:

"Monday 26th February
My horoscope insisted that I go travelling this week, and while I would love to tell you that I was writing from a beach in the Caribbean, Randall and Hopkirk say that they still require blonde action. Unwilling to spurn the stars, and having read in a magazine that it’s the 'primo loco' of the month, I’ve obediently taken a train to Sheffield to visit friends in the cast of Edward II at the Crucible Theatre. Michael Grandage, who I worked with in Good at the Donmar Warehouse two years ago, is directing Joseph Fiennes and James d’Arcy in what is sure to be the most sought-after ticket of 2001. My advice is to book now, because Hollywood executives are already trying to work out where the hell Sheffield is, and with Grandites, Fiennites and d’Arcees reserving whole rows for every night, it’s going to be easier getting hold of a red-hot poker than a ticket for this show."
