SYNOPSIS:
Martha (Monica Potter), a young American woman is flying to London with just a few dollars, to start a new life. At the airport, she meets Daniel (Tom Hollander) on his way home to London from a music industry related business trip. When she doesn’t turn up at a planned lunch in London, he’s devastated. He complains to his two best friends, Frank (Rufus Sewell) and Laurence (Joseph Fiennes). But by chance, Frank, an out of work actor, also meets Martha, at a London park, and the rivalry and conflicts that have marked Frank and Daniel’s relationship escalates. If that weren’t enough, something that happened when Daniel and Martha arrived at London airport finally delivers the coup de grace to Daniel’s hopes of romance with Martha.

"The synposis above is the most you should try and know about this film before you see it: one of the great joys of the film is the constantly refreshing directions the script takes, and like an elaborate joke, it unfolds best if you know little about it. Monica Potter, a little reminiscent of Julia Roberts in looks and speech, is perfect as the accidental heroine, both in her sense of comedy andher vulnerable sensibilities. The male trio matches her for performance power, making this one of the top romantic comedies around. Working with a well honed script that gives as much depth as it does humour, Nick Hamm’s direction is fluid, assured and right on the button. And London is photographed – for once – as a reasonably civilised metropolis. Pity about the new title…."

"Sassy, sexy and totally enchanting, The Very Thought of You, is a delightful, offbeat romantic comedy with a difference. The plot that entwines the central characters in a human drama of comedic proportions is executed with flair and is compulsive viewing. As for the cast – they are inspired. Joseph Fiennes shows himself to be, yet again, an appealing romantic lead, with his long black eyelashes a flutter and his heart on his sleeve. Monica Potter is no doubt tired of being compared with Julia Roberts; in truth, she looks, sounds and delivers her line just like her better known counterpart. But to be fair to Potter, she has great presence, good comedic timing, and looks to have a promising future. Rufus Sewell, with his brooding good looks and Tom Hollander, playing a Martin Short type of role, fill their roles effectively; the three leading men are strong by their very differences. It's not predictable, nor is it tried and true. Refreshing, funny, charming and quite captivating, The Very Thought of You is a fresh and honest charmer, a warm, witty feel-good experience that will make your smile linger."

Moviefinder Review Aug 99

Three love-starved guys and a ditzy blonde inhabit this amusing tale of love across the Pond. Potter (who, if you close your eyes, sounds just like Julia Roberts) decides she's had enough of scraping by in the States and jets over to London to start afresh. Alas, she meets her true love at the airport, but due to the well-woven screenplay, we're not sure which guy he is until the story comes full circle, à la Pulp Fiction. Potter is fairly adorable and Fiennes' charm is infectious, but you'll find yourself rooting against the unappealing Sewell and Hollander. Keep an eye out for a great scene with Fiennes, in which he tries to get something off his chest, that ranks as one of the best surprises of the year.
