In order to participate in an escalating class water gun war, Cory decides to earn the money for an expensive gun by painting Mr. Feeny's fence - a la Tom Sawyer, a shortcut that leads to more work than he had planned on.

Alan's freewheeling mother visits the Matthews' and makes some promises she can't keep, including one to Cory - a trip to Baltimore to get the rare baseball card she brought him signed in person. Meanwhile, Eric is smitten with Feeny's visiting niece, and Cory gets upset when Alan takes Shawn with him on a fishing trip.

Alan is hurt when Cory and Eric try to get out of a father-son softball game he'd been looking forward to, and they quickly regret their relief when he tells them that the game has been cancelled "due to lack of interest" - but Topanga tells them it went ahead without them. Meanwhile, Cory is pitted in a social studies debate against Topanga on whether she should be forced to recite the pledge of allegiance against her will.

Cory and Eric find provocative clothing in their mom's bowling bag and are convinced she is having a clandestine affair. In fact, she and Alan are sneaking out together to go dancing.

Fearing his parents' wrath, Shawn hides out in Cory's bedroom after a cherry-bomb prank goes awry and he blows up the mailbox outside Alan's market. Relishing his role as "Accomplice Boy," Cory must learn a lesson in true friendship by helping Shawn face up to responsibility for his actions. (Note that Shawn's parents are mentioned but not seen.)
