AREA CAVES & CAVERNS

Being part of the Niagara Escarpment has led to the discovery of several "natural wonders", not the least of which has been many scenic caves and caverns in the vicinity.

Bruce Caves

These caves are located on the Bruce Trail. It is a very easy, pleasant hike of about 5 to 10 minutes depending on your abilities. The path is not difficult despite a sign which suggests otherwise (probably written by a city-dweller). It would be beautiful in the wooded surroundings during the Fall colours. The room in the cave above is divided by a huge single column in the front. Lots of fault lines are evident in the ceiling. A second cave is a few yards to the left of this one. Getting there by car is as pleasant an experience as the cave itself. A short trek along the scenic shore of the sound makes the destination almost secondary to the trip itself. There's so much else to see and enjoy along the way. And it's all free.

Scenic Caves

The scenic Caves have much to offer the tourist. Trails are easy and well laid out, but some are steep. A new suspension bridge built for 2003 adds to the appeal. Besides the neat caves, there is also a pond full of large Trout and a nice picnic area beside the chalet. One of the caves is an Ice Cave, boasting ice year-round. Fat Man's Misery is probably one of the skinniest we've ever attempted. (I had to turn back because my camera hanging in front made me too "big".) Plan to spend several hours on this site. Certainly well worth the time! Suitable for almost anyone except those who have little endurance. Will be great for kids & young families.

Northern Escarpment Caverns

This series of caverns are part of the escarpment but are on private property. They are open to the public for a fee which is very reasonable. The caverns are challenging requiring careful climbing over and around rocks and boulders. Several large "rooms" are present to be explored. The path through the series is fun for those who enjoy a more demanding type of adventure. Kids would love it. Definitely NOT recommended for seniors. Wear appropriate footwear.
