Susan Layona Glenn

Miss Susan Layona Glenn was born March 8, 1866 about one year after her father Dr. John James Wingfield Glenn (born June 19th 1832 and died Sept. 20th 1922) returned from the civil war following General Lee`s surrender. She was followed by a brother William ("Will") Ivanhoe Nicholas Glenn born March 6 1868 and died Feb. 5 1939 and then by "Boss" Allen Turner Glenn Sr born June 28 1871 and died Feb.17 1921. These two were the progenitors of her relatives who are late, former and present residents of Pensacola,Fla. Miss Glenn`s grandfather the Reverend Joshua Nicholas Glenn born July 11, 1799 and died Sept. 16, 1879 was the first missionary to St. Augustine Florida in 1823 ( See Florida Historical Quarterly volumn xxiv, #2; Oct. 1945) and she herself was a missionary some 40 years in Brazil, S.A. including her recall after retirement to found and direct the Institute Anna Gonzaga, an orphanage for Brasilian children. After retiring in Atlanta, Ga. she returned to Pensacola for the last time at age 97 on Oct. 19 1963 to attend her great grand neice`s (Carla Jean Sheats) wedding. She related that "Boss" Glenn had 5 sons and 4 daughters. One son and one daughter died in infancy. Miss Glenn was proud of the Glenn`s military service and relates the story of her brother, Allen Turner Glenn (Boss), and his son Thomas (Tom) Wingfield Glenn b. 1894 d. 1946 who was a "Top Sgt." in the United States Marine Corp. in World War 1 and was chosen for General Pershing`s elite corps of one thousand who accompanied him to all all capitols of Europe and returned to Washington for General Pershing`s parade on 5th Ave. in New York City. This is an ongoing research project and more to be added later. For questions concerning the Glenn family, feel free to e-mail me at dciris@eudoramail.com Iris Dale Glenn Wood
