Interesting
Fact
A number of non-commissioned officers,
drummers, and private men were entitled to an allowance for
"necessaries".
These "necessaries" it should
be explained, covered a peculiar arrangement. At the close of the period
of training, knapsacks, stocks and clasps were purchased by the regiment
from the men. The rates of purchase were in no case allowed to
exceed two-thirds of the original cost of the articles.
