So as many of you know, the album “Year Zero” will be coming out in a couple of weeks and some of the songs of that album have already made it to radio and MTV , but a bizarre flurry of web promotion has accompanied the release and it is the inner workings of a modern George Orwell novel and it is a very creative well thought out . I guarantee you if you are a NIN fan and a conspiracy theorist like me, you will get into this.
So here’s the deal, Nails went on a tour in Europe earlier in the year and they had a concert shirt that had dates written in gray, but certain letters were white. The letters spelled out the phrase “I am trying to believe.” Someone at one these shows entered the phrase in google and there was website which contained info about a drug called parepin and paranormal events happening. Once you get to the end of the page, there is an e-mail address that says water@iamtryingtobelieve.com. E-mail it and watch what happens.
So as time went on, new sites were uncovered. One site in particular is “Another Version of the Truth.” There is a picture that is on the website, and if you click on the picture, watch what happens. Furthermore, there is a hidden message board on the screen somewhere. The message board deals with subjects such as “opal” another drug, which is considered as the new crack, and “the presence” which can be described as God. It is a hand, and that is what is on the cover of the album, plus that what comes down from the sky in the Year Zero commercial. You can see it on you tube. If you remember from the song “The Wretched” from The Fragile, the lyrics “The clouds will part and the sky cracks open and God himself will reach his fucking arm through just to push you down.”
While we are on the subject, check out the site thewaterturnedtoblood.net. This is a site designed by a mental patient at Judson Orgam Correctional Facility. (Yes there is a site for that too.) Some of the stuff on these sites are scary so if you are freaked out, think twice. How are the sites being found?
During the tour in Europe, little USB drives were left in bathrooms that contained info about the sites and some leaks of songs off the album. In one specific incident, flyers were handed out at a concert giving a specific location which led to another website, operationswamp000, which was based on a covert operation in England years ago. At the location was a billboard that was very scary looking. Eventually you will be lead to a website called US Wire Tap service which gives you a phone number. Call it!
I think this was a very interesting way to promote an album and it is creativity that our music industry is lacking and you can always count on Trent Reznor to deliver. It is a miracle someone who is now sober came up with this concept. Bravo Trent, and mark my words, Trent Reznor will be on The Point, or some other Strictline show before I’m done.
