Top Ten Reasons why bells should go off:
- The seller will not give refunds, charges a "restocking fee, or will only refund the bid amount.
The court decisions have been for the buyers in all cases of deception, and they have ordered the sellers to reimburse shipping plus pay all court costs
- The seller found it at the estate of a 90 year old lady. probably in the attic
Sad because so much of the authentic items ARE found this way. I have cleaned out many an attic & basement. In one basement I found a gorgeous Roseville Jardinière & pedestal, the lady had received as a wedding gift and never used
- the jar has a very distinct, heavy crazing covering the entire jar
They have been perfecting the crazing of glaze since that was one way to tell the older vintage pottery pieces. They go a bit far with it at times, and will even tea stain the crazing
- the seller has many auctions, all featuring vintage jars with the above descriptions.
Do a search on the seller and check the button for all items. This will bring up the past auctions and you can see what they have been selling
- size is not quite right -- lightweight or shorter
This is one thing they have not been able to overcome. They copy the molds but the clay shrinks in the drying & firing process. Subsequently the fakes are from 1/2" to 2" shorter in height
- you've never seen or heard of the jar, but the seller has more than one for sale
Again check closed auctions, Do your research and make sure that item was made in that color. For instance. McCoy pottery never made a turtle watering pitcher in blue, pink etc
- many more bidders than what is typical
These are the worst for shill bidding They seem to support each other or have groups and will bid on each others auctions with alternate IDs
- it is a private auction or private feedback
Sorry there is no excuse for private auctions even though it is allowed by eBay. That is a cover-up so that no one will warn bidders that the item is fake, or so the bidders can not get together to file a combined fraud complaint with authorities The second you see bidders identities private, hit that back button FAST
- uses "new", "new unused condition" or "new production" in describing
These are "slipped" into the description so they can attempt to claim they stated it was new. Just a note here. If they listed it in that potteries category it better BE that pottery companies item, no matter what the wording. Seller who got caught selling game boxes (yes just the box), he was "sent up the river" because he had listed in that game category, even though in his auction he stated it was for the box
- Seller never really says made by.... or guarantees authentic, But instead refers to the mark, saying "marked --- " or "has --- on the bottom"
A legitimate seller will guarantee that the item is authentic or a 100% refund will be given
