A medical manager at the Roudebush Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana mocked the mental health issues of returning war veterans in an email to employees. The email contains photos of a toy Christmas elf posing as a patient at the hospital's transitional clinic for returning war veterans. In one picture the elf begs for Xanax. In another, he hangs himself with an electircal cord.
The woman who sent the email, Robin Paul, is a licensed social worker. She manages the hospital's Seamless Transition Integrated Care Clinic. The clinic is supposed to aid in the transition of veterans back to peacetime, and to assist with mental health issues.
This incident is just one example of how people with mental illnesses are treated. People with mental illness already have the problem of dealing with medical issues that may be hard to see, hard to diagnose, hard to understand and hard to cope with. Then add in society's view and treatment of the afflicted. Many with mental issues are ridiculed and/or become isolated; which compounds the crippling effects of the illness. Then, when all seems hopeless, and those in need turn to a clinic for help, the manager chooses to joke about their internal psychological fight to stay alive!
It must be stressed that the people receiving the ill treatment in this instance are returning war veterans. These veterans have placed their lives on the line, and are the last ones who should be disrespected...especially by a person who has done nothing more than place her ass on a cozy seat in a safe American office! I say send her for a tour of duty in Afghanistan, then check her mental state afterwards! Better yet, why not just leave her over there....
