Black Motorist Beaten By Inkster, Michigan Police (Video)
Topic: Racism

57 year-old Floyd Dent was pulled over by Inkster, Michigan police and violently assaulted.  The traffic stop, caught on video, shows the African-American Dent being stopped by police, then approached by an armed officer.  Dent is then taken out of his car, and immediately placed on the ground in a chokehold.

Once in the chokehold and on the ground, an officer proceeds to hit Mr. Dent 16 times in the head.  Dent was also kicked and tasered 3 times.  He was bloodied by the incident.

A judge saw the video and dismissed multiple charges.  The judge said that there was no evidence of Dent fleeing the police, or resisting arrest.

Dent is still facing a cocaine charge stemming from the traffic stop.  Police claim to have found the drugs in his car, while Dent says they were planted.  It's interesting to note that one of the officers involved in the incident has been charged previously with falsifying reports and planting evidence.  Click link below to watch video:

Topic: Travel/Recreation
62nd annual chicago pow wow, the whitehurst blog

Are you looking for something to do this Summer?  Do you live in, or will you be in the Chicagoland area in early June?  If so, make plans to visit the 62nd Annual Chicago Pow Wow, taking place on June 6 & 7 at Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

A pow wow (or pau wau) is a gathering of Native American peoples.  I've been to a couple of the Chicago Pow Wows, and they were marvelous!  Tasty Native food, wonderful smells in the air, the rhymic beat of Indian drums and music floating to the heavens, and the most beautiful costumes!  There were also places to buy authentic Native American goods and clothing.

If you want to take in some culture & history, while enjoying wonderful sites and sounds -- and enjoying delicious food -- make plans to visit the 62nd Annual Chicago Pow Wow now!  Oh, and be sure to try the FRY BREAD  and  INDIAN TACOS!

An Early Lesson
Topic: Personal Stories

When I was young, I was a severe asthmatic.  My family didn't have a car, so getting to the hospital was difficult.  We lived in an apartment project on 38th & Cottage Grove in Chicago.  It was a dangerous area!  So dangerous, in fact, that taxi cabs and ambulances wouldn't pick up residents in area.  When I had an asthma attack, my mom and I had to walk out of the projects, and meet the cab on an outside street.  Having an asthma attack makes it hard enough to breathe, but even more so when you have to walk down flights of stairs, and then hike to a meeting spot with the cab.  Not to mention, many times my attacks happened after dark.  We had to pass drunks and gangbangers getting out of our building; then had to worry about stray bullets once we'd made it outside!  Every night after dark there was shooting in the projects!

I had a serious asthma attack when I was five, and my mother and I went through the trials and tribulations of getting to help.  Call the cab, wait a bit -- while I'm gasping for air -- for the cab to arrive, after the estimated time we threw on our coats, rushed down the flights of stairs, and made it through the obstacle course of death to reach our ride.  It was not fun -- especially while fighting for oxygen!  We got to the cab and my mom took me to Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.

After the doctors did what they needed to do, they decided that I needed to be admitted.  I hated staying in the hospital!  I admit to being a momma's boy at the time, and I hated being away from her!  She did the best she could.  To make me feel comfortable, many times, my mother would stay overnight with me; sleeping in uncomfortable let-out chairs.  She still had to go to work, so I just had to get used to being without her.   After a day or two, the nurses told me that there was a play area on my floor.  Toys!!!  Something to help me keep my mind off of missing mom!   As soon as I was able, it was off to the play area!

On my first morning of play I met a friend.  His name was David, and he was a year older than me.  We hit it off immediately!  We played and played, only taking breaks for medicines and tests.  My cousin Gia, who was also five years-old, happened to be on the same floor.  I did take a couple of breaks to visit her.  Sometimes David's mom would sit in the playroom with us, while he and I played out our adventures.  It was a fun time, even with being sick and in a hospital.

A day came that seemed like any other.  Medicines, tests, and play!  David and I were playing with toys, while his mom sat watching us.  Just then, my mother showed up.  I jumped up and ran into her arms!  My mother introduced herself to David's mother, and that was that...or so I thought.  I went to go visit with my mom.  When I came back to the play area I saw David in his room.  It looked like he was getting a lecture from his mom, and he wasn't happy about it!  I could see him talking back and crying!  I didn't see him for the rest of that day.

The next day I woke up and headed for the playroom, as usual.  I didn't see David, but I figured that he'd be along shortly.  I was playing with a toy when he walked up.  He had a mean scowl on his face for some reason.  I said "hi," and he replied with "Why didn't you tell me that your mom was Black?" I was stunned!  I didn't know that it made a difference. "My mom says I can't play with you anymore," he added, then stormed off.  I was shocked!  I guess I should mention that David and his mom were White.

I didn't understand much about race at five, except that the concept was confusing to me.  Mostly everyone in my family is dark, and my hue is light bright.  My mother is Black with a tiny touch of Creek Indian, while my father was Cuban and French.  He's who I got the light skin from.  I never met my father, and at five I knew nothing about him.  I just knew that my family was Black, and they told me that I was Black too; even though I didn't understand why I looked different than other "Black" people.  I didn't understand what race meant, and wouldn't for years to come.  But, what the incident with David did teach me was that people might treat you differently because of being "Black."  You could lose friends over it!  People would stop liking you because of it! That was my early lesson in race.

George Zimmerman: Killing Trayvon Martin Was God's Plan (Video)
Topic: Racism

Getting away with murder wasn't enough for George Zimmerman.  Now he's throwing gas on the fire with his comments in a recent interview.  Zimmerman says that killing Trayvon Martin was god's plan!  In the 13 minute long interview he also takes shots at President Obama.  Zimmerman blames the President for stoking racial tensions against him during his trial.

A few things need to be cleared up.  First, a spiritual hand didn't swoop down to pull the trigger on Trayvon Martin -- George Zimmerman pulled the trigger!  With racism in his mind and heart he saw an African-American in his neighborhood, and he did what he did to change that fact.  He murdered Trayvon Martin!

Secondly, President Obama didn't fan any racial flames.  The minute that facts about the case hit the public, there were already racial tensions.  Black people have had to endure racial murders for hundreds of years.  We know what they look like, and we don't need government officials to tell us how to feel or react to them.

Support The American Indian Center Of Chicago
Topic: Culture

The American Indian Center of Chicago was organized in 1953 by the Chicago American Indian community, with an assist from the American Friends Service Committee, in response to a migration of Native Americans into the Chicago area.  Located at 1630 W. Wilson, the American Indian Center acts as a meeting place for members on numerous tribes.  Additionally, The Center provides wellness, educational and arts programs that are much needed.

The American Indian Center of Chicago needs donations to continue to provide services for the Native American community.  Donations are needed for educational & afterschool mentoring programs, wellness programs and senior meals, and arts & exhibits.

Marijuana -- Dr.'s Choice
Topic: Marijuana Legalization

Just one more endorsement of marijuana. Of course a doctor would rather that their children didn't do weed or alcohol; but, given the choice, cannabis is the answer:

As Expected... Doctors' Choice for Their Own Kids: ‪#‎Marijuana‬ Over Alcohol.

The New York Times recently ran a piece by prominent pediatrician Dr. Aaron E. Carroll where the good doctor actually emphasized that cannabis created fewer harms than alcohol. Of course, he’d prefer that kids would experiment with...

Mentally Ill Woman Beaten To Death By Muslim Mob (Video)
Topic: Religion

I've always had a live and let live attitude about religion.  I don't believe in imaginary beings who sit above the earthlings of the world in judgement -- but many people do.  My problem is when religion is forced, and/or when a person is killed over beliefs or practices that are counter to a religion.  Killing people because they don't have the same beliefs!  This seems to be the trend in Islam.

On Thursday a 27 year-old mentally ill woman was attacked by a mob for supposedly burning a Koran, the Islamic holy book.  The victim, known only as Farkhunda, had suffered from mental illness since the age of 11.  She was attacked by a crowd of religious zealots in Kabul, Afghanistan, beaten, thrown off a bridge and burned.  A life, snuffed out over some burnt pages of a book!  Just another case of Islamic fanatics showing the backwardness of their beliefs.

Mandatory Gun Ownership???
Topic: Gun Culture

Americans love their guns!  Many believe that they need as many guns as they can buy, to defend against an attack by some present or future tyrannical government.  Others believe they need guns to defend against criminal intruders.  I used to be one of these people, until I asked myself, what were the chances that an intruder would break-in right when I was near my gun, in order for me to use it.   I decided that the chances of a gun being found and used by my child were much higher.  Thus, I don't own a firearm.

Whatever side of the debate a person falls on, it still boils down to freedom of choice.  Or, it usually does.  This is not the case in a community in Georgia.

Gun ownership is mandatory in Kennesaw, Georgia.  In 1982, a law was passed requiring all heads of households to keep at least one firearm in theirs homes.  So many crimes committed with so many guns on the streets, and yet a law is issued to require more!  On the gun owners side of the argument, crime in that community is low...but that's with a small population.

Mandatory gun ownership -- the things that make you go hmmmmmm....
