In recent times Russia has become increasingly aggressive. From the invasion of Georgia, to the illegal takeover of the Crimea, to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been flexing her muscles. To continue on this path towards regaining empire, Putin needs to have effective military equipment.
Although Russia has the world's second largest air force, its fleet is aging. Most of the aircraft in the Russian inventory were constructed during the Cold War era. As a result, Russia has set a course towards modernization.
Moscow has budgeted $130 billion for this purpose through 2020. There are plans to buy more than 600 modern aircraft, including 5th generation fighters; as well as over 1,000 helicopters and a number of air defence systems.
As of January 2015, Russia had introduced 28 SU-35s, 34 SU-30s, and 20 SU-34 jets. In addition Moscow wants the 4.5 generation Mig-35 and the 5th generation T-50/SU-50 PAK FA. Russia is planning a variant of this dangerous aircraft for Iran.
