Tell Chris Christie to Sign AB 457 to add PTSD as a Medical Cannabis Condition |
|
|
On August 1st New Jersey's full legislature gave approval to Assembly Bill 457 which would add post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a qualifying medical cannabis condition. The vote in the Senate was 29 to 9; the vote in the Assembly was 56 to 13. Now, the measure sits on the desk of Governor Chris Christie, who has the option of signing it into law, allowing it to become law without his signature, or vetoing it. We are calling Governor Christie to quickly sign it into law, allowing those suffering from the ailment to use a medicine that research has continually shown is beneficial. For example, a government-funded study released in 2014 using human trials found that “the cannabinoid system may serve as a promising target for innovative intervention strategies (e.g. pharmacological enhancement of exposure-based therapy) in PTSD and other fear learning-related disorders.” A separate study released last year found that; “When inhaled or delivered orally or transdermally, cannabinoids (the psychoactive components of unrefined marijuana and various derivative products) activate endogenous cannabinoid receptors, modulating neurotransmitter release and producing a wide range of central nervous system effects, including increased pleasure and alteration of memory processes.... Those effects provide a pharmacologic rationale for the use of cannabinoids to manage the three core PTSD symptom clusters: reexperiencing, avoidance and numbing, and hyperarousal.” If signed into law, New Jersey would join Michigan, California, Illinois, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Arizona, Washington, Rhode Island and Oregon as states that recognize PTSD as a qualifying medical cannabis condition. According to the National Institute of Health, PTSD affects about 7.7 million people. |
From the time she was born, my daughter and I had a special bond. I was home due to health so I did most of the feedings (including the 3 a.m. one -- Grrrrr!), changed the diapers, and was there to help her develop. When I got divorced it was extremely traumatic! I identified with housewives because I was a househusband, and more importantly a housedad! That was ripped away with the divorce! I stayed in my daughter's life over the years, speaking to her almost everyday. There were also the visits that gave me a taste of what I was missing by not having her around.
June 1st changed all of that. She graduated high school and moved in with me. It's been wonderful! I love being around my baby! And, now she makes me so proud by registering for college -- at one of my alma maters. This is a picture of her after she got registered! I LOVE MY DAUGHTER BAJANI SO MUCH!!! #ProudDad

Issei Sagawa, born in Japan, was a Literature student attending the Sorbonne in Paris. While there, in 1981, he became obsessed with Renee (Renae) Hartevelt, a 25 year-old Dutch student. After inviting her to his apartment he shot her in the back of the neck with a rifle -- killing her! Sagawa, who had harbored cannibalistic fantasies since childhood, then turned his dreams into reality. He had sex with Hartevelt's corpse, cut the body into pieces, and began eating it -- some raw and some cooked in a frying pan with seasoning. He was later arrested after packing uneaten body parts into suitcases and trying to discard them at a park. Sagawa confessed and was held for 2 years, before being committed to a hospital for the criminally insane. While he was there he wrote his autobiography In The Fog, which became a Japanese best-seller. French officials were persuaded not to prosecute Sagawa due to his mental state, and he was deported back to Japan in 1984. Once back in his home country he was found to be sane, and by 1986 he was a free man. While talking about Hartevelt he said:
“When I think back on how gentle Renee was, I ask myself why I did what I did, and there’s no end to my feelings of bitterness,” Sagawa reflects. “But I wanted to eat her. That doesn’t mean I wanted to kill her, but I came to the realization that in order to eat her, I had to kill her. If I think about it now, if, instead of her flesh, I’d been able to obtain her pubic hairs or urine and put them in my mouth I might have been satisfied. But I wasn’t able to bring myself to ask—I guess I was afraid my asking her for it would have disgusted her.”
Issei Sagawa, the "Paris Cannibal," went on to write restaurant reviews, paint nudes, and eventually even went into porn. He is currently in his 60's and living in a small apartment in Kawasaki City, Japan.
